Reflecting on a day of great panel sessions and fruitful discussions at last week's POLITICO Europe Energy and Climate UK Summit, which focused on the UK's 2050 net-zero roadmap.   Overall, there's a huge amount of enthusiasm and drive within the energy sector at the moment - albeit tempered by a healthy realism about what's needed to deliver net-zero, and in particular the ambitious targets set by the Conservative and Labour parties for decarbonising the grid, respectively.   There were important contributions and policy discussions on:   - The need to find a balance between net-zero targets that are ambitious enough to spur the industry into action - but that are also achievable. - The implications of the US Inflation Reduction Act and the need for a domestic industrial strategy that will help the UK reclaim its status as one of the best places to invest in clean energy. - How to ensure the UK has the skills base to deliver the green transition. - How to secure genuine buy-in from communities living near new infrastructure, above and beyond just sharing in the economic benefits.   ...and much more besides.   It's clear that whichever party wins the next general election is going to have a huge to-do list, if we are to remain on track for net-zero. But it goes without saying that it will be supported by an energy sector full of commitment and drive for the task ahead.

Last week critics of #naturalgas cheered a report concluding LNG demand in the European Union had peaked. They may want to re-cork the champagne. The report was issued by the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), the EU's energy regulator. But let's take a closer look at the assumptions behind this claim. The #LNG peak assumes the EU will achieve all of its targets in the "REPowerEU" plan, including a dramatic scale up of multiple green technologies. But according to a report from researchers at Columbia University, of the six long-term targets analyzed, only two are "on track." One of those is renewable hydrogen, which is ultimately supposed to displace ~35 billion cubic meters of natural gas, or about half of what the U.S. currently exports to Europe every year. REPowerEU assumes the bloc will be consuming 6.8 million tons of renewable hydrogen this year, rising to 20 million tons by 2030. But today that number is basically zero, and over 90% of the continent's hydrogen is produced from natural gas. Europe's prohibitively restrictive rules for clean hydrogen production are no doubt playing a role. Another key plank of REPowerEU is a massive scale up of heat pumps to replace gas furnaces. A simple Google search shows that heat pump adoption is not matching the rosy projections. In 2023, heat pump sales actually fell across the EU, ironically because natural gas is still so much cheaper. Britain has similarly had a slower-than-expected uptake of heat pumps. Critics also like to mention that natural gas demand in Europe has fallen in recent years. But much of that decline is due to lower industrial output. Last fall, a survey from the European Round Table for Industry found more than 60% of major CEOs across the continent viewed the economy in worse shape than just six months earlier. Reducing fossil fuel use by destroying economic competitiveness was never anyone's goal, nor should it be celebrated. To recap, the basis for an LNG demand peak in Europe is a set of bold assumptions, most of which are currently misaligned with reality. That's not to say markets and policies can't change dramatically and put those ambitious targets back on track. But that's a risky bet built on top of projections that have not materialized. Can we just take a minute to appreciate how big these blades are.... 🤯 THIRTEEN AND A HALF BUSSES BACK TO BACK!! 🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌+ And of course, as we all know... it's #AllAboutTheBlades 🎶 (if you don't know, where have you been? Link in comments) Why? Because bigger blades generate more power per spin. So you don't need as many turbines, cables etc etc which massively brings down the cost. When I started working in offshore wind in 2016, the most powerful turbines had 80m blades. Now, we're looking at almost double that. It's actually pretty mind-blowing when you think of the innovation, and try and imagine what 150m looks like. (If you're a fellow Yorkie like me - it's around the length of the Shambles...to repeat: ONE BLADE). The UK has long-led innovation in blade technology so it's brilliant to see this funding which will help to ensure we remain in the global race for the investment, supply chain and people needed to meet our energy security goals. Especially in the face of increasing international competition, and recently failed auction rounds. 50GW is not impossible but is going to require strong partnership between sector and Government to speed up planning, enable grid connections and secure investment needed. Shares of UK North Sea oil and gas producers plummeted after Labour published its manifesto which included pledges to increase the windfall tax, halt new licences and scrap an investment allowance. Shares of Harbour Energy, the largest producer in the basin, fell 3.8% by 1330 GMT, while shares of Serica Energy plc and EnQuest dropped around 8% each. Shares of Ithaca Energy were down 3.3%.

Ithaca Energy has agreed to buy nearly all of Eni's UK-based oil and gas producing assets for about 754 million pounds in stock, as it looks to become one of the biggest independent energy companies in the North Sea. The North Sea is an energy-rich region in the Atlantic Ocean that has long been coveted by European oil and gas companies for its potential, but aging reserves and security concerns have made development there challenging. The transaction is part of Eni's broader strategy to develop businesses focused on a geographical area or a specific activity and share the investment efforts with a partner.
