Is that right? YES: it's sensible to automate the reuse of metadata that already exists, to avoid double entry and error. Example: here's a 2 min video showing how you can create a one-click table of contents from an ebook's bookmarks in Consonance https://lnkd.in/eP4mU-PC NO: it is a terrible idea to use AI to auto-generate your keywords. That is a nuanced activity that requires editorial insight and nous to get right. Metadata excellence is a human job -- one that Consonance exists to lighten the load of, so that creative people can spend more time being creative. Fantastic to have attended this yesterday. Thanks to the Publisher’s Association and all speakers and guests for making it an extremely worthwhile and engaging time. I certainly had fun but lots to think about too. Loved Perminder Mann’s description of a book as a creative catalyst. Key takeaways for #Pickatale: - How can we help address the decline in children reading for pleasure? - How can we support the school libraries initiative? Is there a place for both digital and print books in young people’s lives? - How can we continue to innovate on AI whilst respecting IP and support our partners and the creative industries (of which we are a part)?

I had to share this post from Gotham Ghostwriters and Dan Gerstein. AI is a tool, a useful one that is here in our midst. Yet, knowing the challenge of writing a book, the complexity and the nuance necessary along with the ever-present pouring of feelings and emotion, no Data driven algorithm can replace the human spirit of storytelling.

AI is developing very quickly, which means the governance around its use will have to be ready to change as gaps occur. That emerges as the key message of a report published just before Parliament ended from the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee. One disturbing detail is the suggestion that the AI Safety Institute - a key feature of the existing governance arrangements - has not been able to get access to some developers’ models to carry out pre-deployment safety testing. So cool to see the final cover design! I designed the cover graphic to illustrate how different perspectives get layered onto a library's catalog entries and how computational methods can uncover the otherwise invisible influences of those perspectives. For those unfamiliar with publishing, Penguin Random House UK is made up of numerous 'publishing houses', which house different specialised 'imprints' within them. 📖 Viking (an imprint of Penguin General which hosts bestselling authors like Richard Osman, Emily Henry & John le Carré) has celebrated its 40th with a new logo ahead of a bumper year of publishing 🧡 Our Art Director, Richard Bravery and Senior Designer, Chris Bentham, were behind the redesign: “Our rationale when designing this logo was to create something timeless and modern. Eschewing the historical baggage that comes with a word like ’Viking’, we took inspiration from modernist principles of design: clarity of thought, legibility and lack of ornament. It can be read as an open book; as representing twin strands of fiction and non-fiction; and as forward-facing, while never forgetting the lessons of the past. The latest issue of Agora is on the theme ‘Teaching History with AI’. It’s been a really interesting issue to commission given the pace with which AI and its uses are developing. This edition examines some of the concerns with handing over our organic intelligence to AI, such as biases in the data it is trained on, AI hallucinations (or AI simply making stuff up) and assessment integrity. Like anything in life, critical thinking is required ­– and needs to be taught! This edition looks at the AI apps that can make History more engaging for students while also reducing the administrative load for teachers. It walks teachers through the many ways AI can quickly develop differentiated lesson plans and assessment tasks, or even summarise professional reading. There’s also extensive guidance about how to write prompts so you can use your new AI tools like a pro. Once you know spelling and grammar, what else is there for an editor to learn? Quite a lot, actually – it may surprise you to know that spelling and grammar are actually a pretty small proportion of what we do. For example, we use tools to increase accuracy and/or efficiency. And this week, one of my tools failed. I cast about for other options that would give greater accuracy than the old-fashioned manual method. And I remembered a conference session that Marieke Krijnen, PhD had given recently on this very topic. Well, it turned out that 'recent' session was in September 2022 😮 Anyway, I dug out the notes and sure enough I found my answer. Problem solved and it's not just about saving me time (although that's important, too, given that quality reduces with tiredness) – I'm pretty sure the software flagged a couple of things that I'd have missed if I'd had to do that task manually. So, thank you to the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) for the annual conference and to Marieke for sharing expertise.
