The RBNZ has started its easing cycle in the face of a rapid economic slowdown. While confidence has bounced in response to lower interest rates, activity and labour market outcomes are likely to get worse before they get better, given the long and variable lags with which monetary policy works and that interest rates remain restrictive. This may encourage a faster easing cycle than the RBNZ currently forecasts. Centuria’s #diversification into #alternative #realestate sectors not only offers investors a platform with unique points of difference but early investment into these sectors enabled Centuria to maintain AUM in a tight market, stabilise earnings and confidently provide forecast growth for Group earnings and distributions into FY25. Jun Bei Liu, Portfolio Manager of Tribeca Alpha Plus Fund, noted that recent US inflation figures have shifted market expectations towards a nearly certain rate cut in the US by September. This outlook has prompted investors to favour cyclical companies, particularly those in consumer discretionary sectors and property trusts, which have underperformed this year. Liu highlighted that, while the Reserve Bank of Australia is not considering rate cuts, Australian discretionary stocks are benefiting from the US market trends. She also mentioned that a Trump presidency would likely be pro-business but could cause volatility. Hedge fund performance was generally positive in July. Most hedge fund strategies had positive performance, with the exception of quant. The average asset weighted hedge fund net return across all strategies was 0.51%. The strongest performing strategy was long biased. Hedge fund performance dispersion was slightly broader than that observed in June.
