According to Ofcom’s 2023 Adults’ Media Use and Attitudes report, 1.9 million UK households have no internet access - up 1% from what was reported in 2022.     The current approach to solving this is focused on investments in fibre infrastructure, however, this isn’t always the best or most appropriate solution. mmWave FWA is a complementary technology that can deliver fibre-like internet connectivity in both rural and urban areas, meeting the growing demand for high-speed internet across the country.     In an article for The Fast Mode last year, our CEO Wim Van Thillo spoke about why mmWave FWA is a great technology to help the UK bridge it’s growing digital divide. In Q2 2024, global fixed broadband connections reached 1.46 billion, following a quarterly growth of 0.95%.  We recorded a decline in fixed broadband subscriptions in 18 countries[1], down from 23 in Q1 2024. Some of these markets have high mobile subscriber penetration, others are experiencing economic headwinds or are already highly saturated markets, for example Hong Kong, Switzerland, Monaco. YouFibre Hits 150,000 Connected Customers 🙌 YouFibre, the altnet connecting on the Netomnia/Brsk network, has managed to double its customer base in just 10 months to reach 150,000 connected customers! Netomnia’s full fibre infrastructure now spans 1.8 million UK premises across over 90 locations, with plans to hit 2 million premises and 235,000 customers by the end of 2024. Long-term goals include 3 million premises and 1 million customers by 2028. Ryan Battle, Managing Director of YouFibre, said: “We’re incredibly proud of our progress, connecting 150,000 customers in just a few years. But this is only the beginning. Our 2025 plans are even more ambitious as we push towards delivering fast and fair internet access for all.” 🎉

Three set to miss rural broadband deadline Three is likely to miss its rural broadband coverage targets as the deadline to address mobile signal “not spots” looms. Mobile network operators have until July to extend their coverage to encompass 88% of the UK’s landmass, the initial goal of a £1bn government initiative. While Vodafone has confirmed it will meet the deadline and Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) is also on track, smaller rival Three has stated it is “working hard” to achieve the targets but has not confirmed its compliance. BT, which owns the EE network, recently struck a rural coverage agreement with some of its competitors to help meet the deadline. Sources reveal that BT has arranged for VMO2 and Vodafone to access some of its mobile masts in remote areas. Ofcom recently published telecoms market data for the UK. https://lnkd.in/ehJa-5Xf 🔗 It shows mobile data growth rates of only 15% over the last year. Mobile data growth rates are slowing and at a rapid rate. Interestingly, mobile revenues in the UK increased 6.6% from the same period a year earlier. ARPU increased from £12.52 in 2022 up to £13.05, bucking the trend of years of steady decline. This increase is thanks, in no small part, to inflation-linked price increases from the major operators. Historic predictions out of Ofcom in 2022 offered data growth scenarios up to 55% by now. I wonder how many MNOs considered this data when assessing the ROI of 5G implementations! The debate continues about whether 5G is actually needed by the 98% of ‘normal’ users, where 4G seems perfectly sufficient. However, one could argue that the UK is still predominantly not sufficiently 5G SA, and therefore, do 5G users experience the full benefits 5G has to offer yet? The data growth story gets skewed when looking at a global view where countries with large populations are still experiencing significant growth. Ericsson is putting numbers out like 59Gb by 2029 in Western Europe. Ofcom shows growth from Q3-Q4 2023 was only 1.5%, or 6% if annualised. So question marks arise over Ericsson’s view❓. What is apparent from Ofcom is that data growth rates in many mature markets are decreasing. What will be the new device or use case that drives growth again?
