‘You can’t really measure the impact of PR’. I hear that said so often that sometimes even those of us working in the sector can be at risk of internalising that belief. Which is why it’s so uplifting when a client takes the time to write in on a Friday afternoon to say ‘the result of the press coverage [that Rostrum generated] is a 25% increase in website traffic and a 50% increase in form completions’. That’s a measurable return on investment from your PR programme.

The problem with PR people is that we're never going to tell you if business is a bit sh*t. Most marketing industry reporting I read on new business paints a rosy picture of a moment in time - because of course we're all going to be vocal when we've just won a new client! 📣 So I always look forward to the annual jfdi and Opinium New Business Barometer released at the start of each year because it cuts through the PR spin and presents real insights into what's really going on. The reality is that New Business is TOUGH so I know the people behind the report are keen to get as many agencies as possible involved in the study to ensure insights are maximised 📈 The survey covers a broad cross section of agencies so if you've not completed it before please do! It's #InternationalDayofCharity today, and it had me thinking about the role of charity and Corporate Responsibility for brands. As a PR person, I have often been asked to add this element to the brand story, but its not a cheap PR trick or gimmick to generate buzz - or it shouldn’t be! It's also not an optional add-on anymore, in an age of socially-conscious consumers, it's integral to have this purpose and value as part of the brand. Six things we’re hearing from clients right now 🗣️🤝 1️⃣ “The media’s changing and my agency needs to change too” – Every client is conscious that the media landscape is rapidly evolving. That’s probably magnified in the tech sector where so much of the conversation takes place online. Clients want an agency whose work and proposition reflects this shift. 2️⃣ “I’m exploring more paid and owned work and want to know if you’re set up to handle it” – Linked to no.1 above, as the media shrinks, increasing numbers of comms leaders are getting responsibility for storytelling through paid and owned channels. That’s an opportunity for agencies with the right skillsets. 3️⃣ “We need an AI story but we’re worried we’re not at the cutting edge” – Everyone feels they have be able to say something about AI (more for their customers and talent than for the media, in our experience). But they need help identifying what’s interesting about what they do and positioning it with the right tone. 4️⃣ “I’m fighting harder for budget than ever before, so please give me the evidence to justify it” – Comms and marketing budgets have been under huge pressure for the past couple of years. Clients need help making the case to the business about where to invest – which requires a combination of hard-nosed data and persuasive savvy from their agency partner. 5️⃣ “We can’t let the comms basics distract us from the big moments that will move the needle” – With tighter budgets comes more pressure to make an impact with the money that’s invested. Clients increasingly want to see strategically valuable work prioritised and connected more closely to the business – so day-to-day tactics have to run without a hitch and not soak up unnecessary time and attention. 6️⃣ “Understanding our audience has never been more important” – One big growth area recently has been audience research and insight. It’s where marketing, as the voice of the customer inside the business, can add massive value, especially for sales-led activity. “So, Danielle tell us; why IS it you’re looking to work in PR? We’ve met several people who seem to think it’s all ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ and champagne all day, they’re totally deluded…” Oh SHIT. They’re onto me. This was NOT going well. Sat there in the swanky offices of the PR firm I was being interviewed by, I have never felt so busted in my life. That was TOTALLY why I wanted to work in PR, 100%. Ab Fab and Bolly, sweetie darling - what else? 🥂 I didn’t even really know what PR meant. What I DID know, was from that point on, I: 😬 Really needed to find out what it DID mean. 😬 Really really needed to then decide if I DID want to work in that area or not. 😬 Really really REALLY needed to think about these things BEFORE going into the interview because the sweat was real, LET me tell ya. Needless to say, my cover was blown at that point, but it was all good because turns out a) I didn’t want to work in PR anyway and b) it’s ended up being a decent story for the socials and to help my DJP (Dream Job Project) clients to NOT be a massive plank in their interviews like I was in mine. Have YOU ever been in an interview you were totally blagging? How did you turn it around? Did you want to jump out of the window? I did. Wanted to, that is, I didn’t actually do it. Probs should have. Anyway, going down career memory lane is brilliant; bringing all those long forgotten memories back can be a gamechanger in interview prepping. I’ve got a dilemma - what’s more important, getting results from ads, or representation and diversity? I recently attended a charity comms conference and one of the talks was about the importance of EDI and representation in communications and how we, as an industry, can improve. However when running ad campaigns for our clients, our objectives are obviously centred around getting the best results whether that’s leads, donations, awareness etc… Now, the tricky part… when analysing best performing creatives amongst multiple children’s charity campaigns, we found in general the results were driven by creatives featuring white, female, younger children. Stories or creatives featuring teenagers, people of colour, or males just didn’t hit as well. The data would say to switch off these ads but that just doesn’t feel right. My thoughts have been that we need to revisit objectives to include representation even if CPR ends up being slightly higher but I’m interested to know what else we could be doing?
