There’s been considerable discussion and speculation regarding the potential use of copper in data centers, particularly those associated with AI. Projections for the end of the decade vary widely, from tens of thousands to millions of tonnes annually. What are the uncertainties that create those wildly different copper demand forecasts? One major factor is the non-linear relationship between computing power and energy consumption. AI’s reliance on short-distance GPU connections within data center server rooms tends to favor copper over fiber optic for energy efficiency. However, the broader AI-related power demands remain uncertain. Some of the higher copper intensity estimates might be outdated or include general grid infrastructure. Nevertheless, if companies opt to build their own power infrastructure, it could significantly increase copper usage. Conversely, recent experiences with new applications suggest that thrifting and substitution could occur rapidly. For example, fiber optic could replace copper in data cables, and aluminum could substitute copper in power cables. #Copper #DataCentres #AI #CRU
