Paul Streets: A parting eulogy to the voluntary and not-for-profit sector In his final Third Sector blog as Chief Executive of Lloyds Bank Foundation, Paul Streets sums up his big picture view of the voluntary sector. On the dangers of government contracting: "At best, we risk creating Noah’s Arks for the chosen few, cross-subsidised with voluntary income. At worst, charities become part of the problem – unable to hold poor services to account because they have been co-opted into providing them. "This is just as true for local charities and their relationship with local government and the NHS as it is for national charities and Whitehall. "We all want to see something better. But it doesn’t look as though it will be better any time soon. "This means we are entering a period of fiscal conservatism – whoever wins the general election." DefenceTech is an interesting (and obviously pertinent) sector. When we first cut the data for this report I was surprised to find investment volumes struggling as much as they are. That's one of the reason's why we look in a bit more depth at #dualuse in this year's edition – these crossover sectors are the bright spots for investment. A great example of a dual-use company is Materials Nexus (featured in the report): they use ground-breaking AI technology we are able to discover superior materials faster than ever before. As Dr Jonathan Bean, CEO of Materials Nexus, says, "trial and error R&D will be a thing of the past with AI." AI with defence applications is one area of strong investment. Cleantech, advanced manufacturing, and cyber also comparatively strong investment levels.

Labour won the UK General Election today with a landslide victory. What does this mean for a digital Pound? Will Keir Starmer’s "changed" political party derail the introduction of a CBDC? We recently spoke with The Banker about this very subject. Here's some of the insights from their article published yesterday👇 While the Bank of England (BoE) has not yet finalised their decision on a digital pound, Jannah Patchay, Policy Lead at the Digital Pound Foundation, highlighted that a Labour government could very likely influence its direction and has shown “more of a commitment than any other political party”. Despite the US Congress banning the Federal Reserve from issuing a CBDC, Gilbert Verdian, CEO of Quant, believes it’s unlikely for the UK to follow suit. He highlighted the ongoing global debate on the necessity of fiat digital currencies, with concerns over privacy and fraud risks. Meanwhile, Diego Ballon Ossio, Partner at Clifford Chance, emphasised that Labour could shape the development of a digital pound by redesigning payment frameworks, impacting regulators’ roles, payment infrastructure, and potential interchange fees. He suggested Labour might regulate interchange fees to control monetary policy and reduce consumer prices. Labour has also criticised big tech companies for inadequate efforts against online fraud. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will design the framework for a retail CBDC, with potential regulatory discretion differences between a Labour and Conservative government. Ballon Ossio anticipates Labour retaining more control over the framework to ensure consumer protection. Verdian added that industry momentum behind a CBDC remains strong regardless of political changes, with a significant number of responses to the Bank of England’s consultation indicating substantial support. He expects a minimum viable product of a CBDC to be live in the next year or two, pending decisions from the Bank of England and HM Treasury.
