Designing and implementing a digital transformation programme is complex. There are countless considerations to make and lots of individual components to factor into any decisions about systems or approach. The process is much easier when you have experts on hand to outline and advise on the best options. That's exactly what we did when supported NHS Dorset to develop its electronic health record (EHR) programme. We brought in a blended team of specialists in EHR, clinical leadership, service design and architecture, and communications to help NHS Dorset assess and deliver its EHR readiness activity. Some stark reading here from the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) around the ‘The True Cost of Delivering Public Services’. Wide-spread concern that contracts are not fully covering the costs of services, with 87% of charities and community groups reporting that they are subsidising those services as a result and that 72% have either withdrawn from public service delivery or are considering doing so. It is not ok to keep asking charities to do more for less and it will have a long term impact on people using services. Those people are often tackling health inequalities already - so they are doubly hit.

Money and health professionals will always be limited resources, but citizens, communities, relationships, and capabilities are abundant and intrinsic. If we are going to restore society’s confidence in the NHS, then we should draw on the power of society to improve it! NHS trusts have some way to go on #digitalmaturity, the new snapshot report examining the Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA) scores of NHS trusts across England from Digital Health reveals. Out of seven success measures, ‘Ensure smart foundations’ emerged as the top-performing measure across all trusts, but with an average score of 3.2 out of five.
