If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

This week we've launch our 2023/2024 Sustainability Report. This is always one of my favourite times of year as it makes me reflect on successes and reminds me of all the different ways Sanctuary contributes to tackling some of the hardest challenges that our society faces...from climate change to fuel poverty, supporting people to thrive in old age to creating vibrant and resilient communities. Some highlights: - our operational carbon footprint is down 38% from our baseline year - over 70 of our sites took part in No Mow May - our average rent is only 51.7% of the private sector average, with 99% of non-specialist social housing on lifetime tenancies - the quality of our CQC registered services is sector leading (95% rated good or outstanding for Sanctuary Care, 98% rated good or outstanding within Sanctuary Supported Living) - we've supported customers in more ways than ever before including the launch of our Hardship Fund in response to the cost of living crisis - we've supported 312 community projects with £1.4m of our own funding and even greater impact due to the support of our supply chain - Our latest Inclusion for All strategy places customers at its heart and recognises the key role of equity in driving a fairer society #lifeatsanctuary #sustainability Read it here:

Must read! As we all continue to double down on our efforts to invest in reducing GHG emissions – this is a timely and welcome publication by Oxford Net Zero and BSI (an update to their earlier research) which assesses 37 (!!!!) voluntary resources used internationally (by non-state players) to guide net zero action. Great to see strengthened convergence amongst various tools and resources so we’re slowly all getting on the same page – but still so many gaps! So many areas could benefit from greater alignment!! Sustainability in practice: risks & opportunities Earlier today, The Institute of Directors (IoD) hosted an event featuring  Martin Baxter and Sarah Mukherjee MBE (from the THE INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND ASSESSMENT) - and Donald Mavunduse (MIoD), Sustainability Leader, IoD. Some thoughts: ✅ Transparency is essential as sustainability issues can impact organizational value, future returns on investment, and financial stability. ✅ Climate disclosures are required for UK organizations, involving reporting on organizational governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets. These disclosures also include accounting for emissions in the value chain (Scope 3) and focusing on credible net-zero pathways through organizational Transition Plans. ✅ The government has established a framework for recognizing and implementing the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) disclosure standards in the UK. These sustainability disclosures cover a broader range of potentially material issues, including environmental and social aspects, and extend to supply chains. ✅ The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) represents extensive EU law in this area. Due diligence involves extending organizational accountabilities across the value chain and covers a range of commodities and human rights considerations. The new EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive has a broad reach, impacting supply chains beyond the EU. #ibgc

Great to catch up with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) team last week (Cathrine Armour & Barbara Sanderson) at both the 👉 #RBEU 👉 Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) CSO forum. We discussed the various methodologies used in Earth Blox to solve #TNFD Data Deluge. There is no 'lack of data'. The opposite is true. Companies are facing a mountain of data types when it comes to reporting under the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). With a plethora of datasets available, selecting the right ones for the right use cases can be overwhelming. There are methods which involve using multiple data sources that complement each other, painting a more comprehensive picture of a company's nature-related risks and opportunities. By leveraging various datasets, companies can strengthen their TNFD disclosures in a few ways: 👉 Reduced Bias: Dependence on a single dataset can lead to skewed results. Convergence reduces bias and fosters a more holistic view. 👉 Increased Credibility: Combining data sources strengthens the credibility of your reporting. 👉 Improved Actionability: Different datasets can reveal hidden patterns and insights, leading to more targeted actions. Remember, the TNFD framework is still evolving. A convergence approach allows companies to adapt to future requirements while ensuring robust reporting from the get-go. Despite the urgent need to prevent a climate crisis, many SMEs struggle with sustainability complexities. Shockingly, without the same standards as PLCs in the UK, most do little to reduce their impact. Some merely pay for a certificate to claim carbon neutrality by 2050. Leaders, evaluate your impact honestly. Must laws drive conscious decisions for sustainable performance? Let's not just pay lip service with misleading certificates. Society demands change; the future depends on it. Improve sustainable performance without complexity. 🗣 "I can't sign up to SBTi because I'm a growing business!" I've heard this phrase so many times. SBTi net zero decarbonisation pathways only seem to suit very large enterprise businesses (even then they seem to be hard to follow). So If i'm a new business (likely starting off with sustainable values) or a growth business (likely growing because of a more efficient business model)... ❓ How do I chart my own path to net zero with a more appropriately distributed carbon budget? (Apologies for the scrappy graph-work, not my forte) Here is a suggestion for 3 different carbon budget pathways that may suit businesses based on maturity. 1. Absolute Y-O-Y reductions  📅 businesses incorporated pre-Paris Agreement (2015) 📉 IPCC aligned annual emissions reduction to 10% of baseline.  🔎 See, SBTi validated net zero pathways 2. Limited Overshoot  📅 businesses incorporated 2015-2025 📈 Allowed up to 10% emissions growth up to 2030 📉 From which point adjusted absolute decarbonisation must start. Resulting in 90% reduction by Net Zero target year based on the emissions of the peak year (baseline) 3. Permissible Overshoot  📅 Businesses incorporated after 2025 📈 Scope 3 emissions growth allowed up to 2040,  📉 Scope 1 and 2 emissions must be zero or net zero through in-year carbon removal retirement Strictly meant as a starter for 10, please provide your comments positive and negative and I welcome ideas for different approaches to the problem of setting a voluntary carbon budget for net zero. #NetZero #Sustainability #CarbonReduction #BusinessGrowth #SBTi #ClimateAction
