@BusinessSaleBasics - How Will 'AI' Affect the Business Sale Process? This is a good question...and obviously everyone is talking about 'AI' disrupting everything so what about business sales? Attached is the first computer I bought in 1978 (the tape drive was the storage 😂 ). This was a time before the internet, before cell phones, before fax machines, and pretty much before most of the technology we use today. You could say all of the technology which came afterwards has totally disrupted our lives relative to that time. But we are all still here...still starting businesses...still needing to add value to the community to run a successful business...still trying to find the perfect offer for the 'people' who will buy products from us...still talking about how important people are in a business to make it work and about high-performance teams. In fact, we talk about the things that are highly people-oriented like high-performance teams and customer journey more now than we did then! When we look at why M&A transactions fail, one of the biggest reasons is lack of cultural fit and not having the right buyer with the right value systems and orientation. When we talk about one of the greatest weaknesses in a business that is trying to sell, it is very often the key person issue where our X Factor Leader/Owner is too critical to the business. The conversation also generally moves on to the other key 'people' in the business. The common theme here is...people. People have not become more irrelevant, in fact, our focus is even more on the quality of the people, the relationships and the values than it was in the 1970s! How is AI going to change the business sale process? Significantly...as our ability to analyse data and trends will drastically speed up as will our ability to communicate (and hopefully the legal process will be streamlined!) But the people aspect is not going to diminish anytime soon. So the need for a heavily people oriented process that matches the right new owner to the business with the right value alignment will be critical (until the machines take over completely). Once a new owner is matched, success involves a process closely managed which allows the seller and new potential owner to get to know each other and build trust...and trust is going to make or break transactions as it always has...maybe more so as the requirement for total transparency will be unavoidable in a world where we have all the information at our fingertips. #businessales #mergerandacquistions #businessvaluation

🩺 The King's Speech stirred hope for a healthier UK – but will the necessary investments materialise? Months ago, the King's address set out bold promises: reduced NHS waiting times, enhanced mental health support, and a strong focus on preventive care. Yet, with £1.3 billion of tech funding now off the table, there seems to be a discrepancy between the lofty goals and the willingness to make the necessary investments in technology. While the Darzi Review highlighted how technology could transform healthcare, the lack of investment threatens to leave us stuck with outdated infrastructure. The dream of tech-driven, proactive healthcare is at risk, but it doesn't have to be. 🚀 It’s up to all of us—founders, innovators, and policymakers—to ensure that digital health and preventive care stay at the forefront of our national agenda. Brilliant conversation with Sir Nigel Rudd  for our latest episode of Enter the Boardroom. 👉 Link in post below My three key take-aways ➕ Chairs don’t need sector experience (unless it’s a bank): “I think that a really good chair can chair businesses where they don't have sector knowledge. I've done retail, manufacturing, airports … all that sort of thing. I never had a problem in getting the basics of understanding what drives the business … [But] for a bank, I just didn't think I had the toolkit.” ➕Actively involve non-execs in strategy: “I always quite like to have the non execs involved in [strategy]. Because, quite frankly, turning up for a quarterly board meeting is not the greatest thing in the world, unless you actually have something interesting to talk about. Yesterday, I attended the House of Lords by invite of The Entrepreneurs Network and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds MP. Some excellent work by TEN on a report highlighting symptoms of the British venture ecosystem that need cure. I thought back to zero to one by Peter Thiel, where in his Stanford University lectures documented in the book, Peter cites "the founding" of the company and "the foundation" as critical to future success. He also talks about "extending the founding" in the book. It occurs to me, that this is where the UK screws up, we end the founding early, confusing "creative" leadership and "organised" management (reference to HBDI) - having the latter replace the former (rather than balancing and extending the founding), which impacts our agility in addressing a rapidly changing market (adding what Peter Thiel calls inertia). We also screw up in the early founding, with early stage investments that are capped, take too much equity and too much control too early, and a lack of early entrepreneurial education, especially in the regions and in underrepresented groups. (and I don't mean MBAs) The impact of this is only seen later, when companies are in later rounds and they find themselves limited in accessing later stage capital internationally against other companies that have greater agility and better foundations. The UK has amazing technology, amazing research, and often is best in class in innovation, but we're product led entrepreneurs without the "traction first" marketing hustle of our American counterparts. At Venture.Community, with our Co-operative Venture Societies, part of our thesis is - if we can up-skill and up-tool founders early (within a safe mutual environment) and bring in long term mentorship from parallel entrepreneurs who have venture experience, we can secure the right "founding" and "foundation", that sets our a path to future success. We believe the gap is early stage, where US companies are securing £10m seed rounds on £20m-£40m valuations to set out a trajectory for success, UK companies are securing £2m on £4m valuations with similar innovation. We often fund them just enough to fail, for others to pick up our IP from the administrators.

"The extensive plan revolves around three key pillars: 1. ‘Laying the foundations for AI to flourish in the UK’ - includes building new AI supercomputers and massively speeding up planning approvals for data centres. 2. ‘Boosting adoption across public and private sectors’ - includes setting up a new digital centre of government that would focus on embedded AI into public sector settings, like the National Health Service (NHS). 3. ‘Keeping us ahead of the pack’ - includes creating a new unit dedicated to wooing AI firms to set up and scale in Britain, including guaranteeing companies access to data and energy." 🔔 Funding Alert for UK SMEs 🔔 The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) launched a £7.4m pilot scheme yesterday to subsidise the costs of AI training for SMEs in the UK. Eligible businesses are able to apply for for funds to cover up to 50% of their AI training costs. To be eligible, you must: - Be registered and operate in the UK - Employ between 1-249 employees in the UK - Have been operating for at least 1 year - Be able to match-fund 50% of the cost of the training You can get between £2,500 and £10,000 in grants, depending on your business size. You'll be responsible for finding your own AI training provider (*massive, dramatic cough and lots of pointing at myself*). Applications are now open, but it's a short pilot window - they'll close on 31 May. Everyone in the UK is talking about the newly published report from Lord Ara Darzi on the NHS. The key message of the report is that "The National Health Service is in serious trouble." At the same time, British health insurer Bupa is launching a 'Netflix-style' private GP subscription service (and has 54 "Bupa's clinics"!). Is this a real innovation, that could potentially be embedded into the NHS in the future, or is it creating a two-tier health system, where only those that can afford it would be able to get proper care? I wrote down a few thoughts. 1️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐇𝐒: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 "𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚 𝐩𝐢𝐠" 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 All universal #healthcare systems in Western Europe (Germany, France, Italy, etc.) are facing a crisis. However, the #NHS in the UK is in an even more critical state, with an even greater need for change. Digital #innovation will be at the heart of the NHS transformation and, if successful, could serve as a model for other universal healthcare systems worldwide. 2) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐂𝐒: 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭, 𝐛𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐝 Among many initiatives, the NHS launched the ICS. The 42 Integrated Care Systems (ICS) are statutory partnerships of organizations responsible for planning, commissioning, and delivering health and care services within their respective regions. This is a strong example of integrated care at the community level. However, some insiders have mentioned that "while it’s a great concept, it is not being executed effectively." 3️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 “𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐏 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦" 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 The NHS has also launched the "National #GP Practice Improvement Program" aimed at modernizing General Practices. The goal is to shift from a "first come, first served" approach to a needs-based model that uses population health data and segmentation, ensuring the right care is provided to the right person in the right way. Early results from this new model have already demonstrated improved access, greater inclusivity, and increased efficiency, with evidence showing that 30% of doctor visits could be replaced by text messages. 4️⃣ 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐇𝐒' 𝟏𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 Lord Darzi identified the following key themes for the upcoming 10-year health plan, most of which will be driven by #HealthTech: ◾ Re-engage staff and re-empower patients. ◾ Lock in the shift of care closer to home by hardwiring financial flows. ◾ Simplify and innovate care delivery for a neighbourhood NHS. ◾ Drive productivity in hospitals. ◾ Tilt towards technology. ◾ Contribute to the nation’s prosperity. ◾ Reform to make the structure deliver. Regulation of AI cannot be done in isolation, primarily because major tech companies serve a global customer base, but also because very few Governments have the scale, resources or political clout to hold big tech accountable. The UK sits in an interesting position between the more rigid EU AI Act (with the EU's history of holding big tech to account) and the new regulation-sceptical Trump administration, driven by Musk.
