This is absolutely correct. There are huge gains to be made in improving the health and outcomes of our population by partnership working, and it can be a powerful vehicle in driving innovation, research and economic growth. We are all scarred by the misdemeanours and misbehaviours of the past. And we know that huge multinational corporations know how to manipulate systems, governments and people (see the food, tobacco, alcohol and gambling industries) but I believe there are enough safeguards in place now in the ABPI code and organisational policies to embolden a new era of collaboration. This report helps to articulate the potential. Worth a read.

Opportunity to co-design and pilot CLEAR’s AI-powered clinical notes summary tool   The National CLEAR Programme is delighted to be announcing the launch of a seven-month AI pilot which is open to seven NHS trusts across England.   It follows the programme’s development of a new clinically-designed AI powered patient consultation summary tool which can transform workforce productivity enabling more time for patients.   Expressions of interest are now being sought for the pilot which offers seven NHS trusts (one per region) to become early adopters and co-designers of the tool within pre-operative assessment (anaesthetics).    Two webinars providing further information are being held on Wednesday 29 May and Tuesday 4 June 2024. The vital role of expert specialist medical laboratory scientists in healthcare efficiency. Those of us working in the cancer diagnostic environment have always known what is outlined in this report. It is way overdue for those in wider Health and specific Pathology management to also take notice of the importance and vital role that scientist expertise adds to cancer diagnostic pathways and indeed all health clinical pathways. Strategy approaches targeting the medical laboratory workforce that are totally focused on fiscal determinants that end up deskilling the expert scientist roles for a cheaper less skilled workforce should always be called out. Very hard to do anything in health without a diagnosis but still we have no medical science leadership clout in NZ to ensure this vital medical science connectivity, very eloquently outlined in this paper, is front and center within all Cancer and wider health discussions.

I want to recommend this useful and timely report from the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. AI-powered genomic health prediction (AIGHP) is set to transform the future of healthcare by using AI to analyze genetic data and predict disease risks and drug responses. While it promises personalized treatment and preventive care, challenges such as data privacy, genomic discrimination, and uneven accuracy, especially for non-European populations, suggests the need for cautious implementation. Policymakers will need to balance the potential benefits with these risks, ensuring robust safeguards and equitable access. However, the risks can be managed with proper regulation and strategic use. This week, the STANDING Together initiative – co-funded by the Health Foundation in partnership with the NHS AI Lab, and enabled by NIHR – published a new set of recommendations aiming to help improve the way datasets are used to build AI health technologies and reduce the risk of potential AI bias. The use of AI-enabled technologies in health care brings significant potential, from helping diagnose illness faster and more accurately, to streamlining time-consuming administrative work. However, there are already notable examples of how these technologies might exacerbate existing inequalities. This can often be a result of the inequalities reflected in the datasets used to train and test AI tools. Recognising and addressing these biases – which the recommendations seek to do – is a key step towards ensuring that the proliferation of AI-enabled technologies in health care can benefit everyone. We need to develop more #patient centric #HEOR data driven models to support selection of #medication combinations that achieve the best outcome for each person’s budget.   From today a #prescription is going to cost just shy of ten pounds in England. The combination of an increase in the number of prescribed medications per person and the rising cost of #prescriptions in #England means some simply cannot afford their full script.   Clinicians must now shift mindset and undertake medication reviews to match each patient’s budget. It’s unrealistic to think that those living ‘hand to mouth’ can afford #prepaymentcertificates.   Patients must be engaged in decision making, for some this will mean a trade-off between food and heat in their homes against medication costs.   On this #MayDay, perhaps remember those words of #Neruda – “You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep the spring from coming."
