The NHS Community Health Services Data Plan contains a clear vision to provide a 'single source of the truth'. It states that data about community health services must be relevant, good quality, linkable, consistently defined and of low burden for providers to collect. NHS England has said it will develop an aligned, strategic approach to primary and community data development that supports integrated care by March 2026 - but progress can be made now, especially with EPR interoperability. The guidance states that limited #interoperability of provider IT systems and complex information governance (IG) procedures make it difficult to deliver and plan joined up, integrated care locally. NHS trusts have some way to go on #digitalmaturity, the new snapshot report examining the Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA) scores of NHS trusts across England from Digital Health reveals. Out of seven success measures, ‘Ensure smart foundations’ emerged as the top-performing measure across all trusts, but with an average score of 3.2 out of five. Fascinating reading NHS Confederation's response to the Lord Darzi report. At Alocura we were particularly taken with their recommendations that health and care leaders need to ensure every pound was spent as effectively as possible, that capital expenditure wasn’t just about buildings but developing IT and digital tools - and that ICS leaders in England needed to innovate. EXACTLY! Innovation is at the heart of what we do and it’s why we’re able to say that Rostrata is the solution to some of Lord Darzi’s misgivings – and the NHS Confederation’s suggestions. Our pioneering cloud-based care management system offers the kind of digital tool they’re talking about to operate and interrogate every element of the care process in out-of-hospital settings. Online guide from NHS Providers to serve as roadmap for tackling health inequalities. NHS Providers has launched an online guide designed to support NHS board members in tackling health inequalities, with the aim of the resource acting as a “roadmap” to enable people to “champion health equity and create positive change”. The guide includes a self-assessment tool covering 25 questions around data, evidence and evaluation, strategic leadership and accountability, system partnerships and more, with the tool to provide a score and maturity rating of the trust’s position across key domains. A “bespoke” set of health inequalities objectives are then suggested by the self-assessment tool, with NHS Providers encouraging trusts to use these as a basis for board-level discussion. Today, Understanding Patient Data has published a new report by White Tail Consulting based on in-depth interviews with leaders from Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) across England about how ICSs use patient data. The findings of the report show considerable variation in maturity of ICS data infrastructure, sharing and use, with some systems and areas better able to realise the opportunities of using data to improve population health. Despite challenges relating to variation across the country, capacity, organisational culture and development of data skills, and recruitment and retention of staff, participants report a desire to collaborate to drive improvements in the use of data nationally, with many examples of best practice already present. Tucked away in the back of the latest NHS England board papers is a dry document with big consequences: “The purpose of these Directions is to require NHS England to collect and analyse information in order to implement automated granular daily data collections to replace and rationalise existing, less regular local and national data flows, and national aggregated data collections”. Phew. You have to plough on almost to the end, to see how this fits in with everything else. “The data will be collected, pseudonymised and made available through the national instance of the Federated Data Platform” (FDP). The use of which, as we now know, is being made mandatory. The NHS’s experience of granular data collections has not been an entirely happy one. Every NHS trust has different core IT systems, and even when they are the same brand they are inevitably configured differently. So when ‘the centre’ hands out a specification and says ‘submit that’, what they get back from the NHS is inconsistent data with bits missing. And yet they’re doing it again. “The requirements specifications contain the detail of individual collections that NHSE will be directed to collect and analyse”, says the dry document. Does this mean that trusts are forever stuck with unreliable national data and poor analysis? Not necessarily - there is a way out, and it is under trusts’ control. By thoroughly standardising their data before submitting it, trusts can ensure it will be reliable and useful after it comes back from the FDP. If this sounds too good to be true, it isn’t . We have been doing this for decades, and it works. If you drop us a line, then we’ll be happy to talk through how it would work for you.
