If you work in IP, are interested in EDI and are UK based this IP Inclusive hybrid event on 23 April 2024 (4 for 4:30pm) sounds like it's one not to miss. With the title "Help! How do I start a conversation on EDI" I imagine the panel are going to have a lot to talk about. New Advertising Regulations for HFSS products 🚨 From 1 October 2025, there will be a ban on advertisements for less healthy food and drink being shown on TV before 21:00 in the UK. 📺❌ Ads within Ofcom-regulated on-demand programme services will be subject to the same 21:00 watershed, and otherwise paid-for ads for in-scope food and drink products will be banned completely online. Following its earlier confirmation that advertising restrictions for less healthy food or drink (also referred to as products high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS)) on TV and online would be implemented, the government has now, on 3 December, laid the Advertising (Less Healthy Food Definitions and Exemptions) Regulations 2024 before Parliament and published guidance on them. Intellectual Property Office UK has announced its new SME financial support scheme. The gist of it is: - IP AUDIT: Businesses can get a part-funded IP Audit (worth £2,250) from an IP professional. The business must contribute £750 towards the cost of the audit. - IP ACCESS: Businesses can get a contribution of up to £2,250 for IP professional services, e.g. towards filing patent application. The business must pay at least 50% towards the total cost of the IP service. IP Audit funding is not mandatory for gaining the IP Access funding. It is great to see this funding continue, albeit in a slightly different format from before. As will most of these things, the devil is in the detail, and so please do get in touch if you want to discuss the availability and criteria of these grants. Knowing the process and likelihood of obtaining the grant before you spend time and effort jumping through hoops could save you an headache further down the line. For my Scottish contacts, Scottish Enterprise are a super friendly bunch who can also help you navigate the funding options.

This really highlights some of the challenges for retail (sorry - I know you want to change that word!) and also, refreshingly, puts forward some really sensible suggestions of things that could change. An interesting example of fallout from the #postofficescandal is the loss of Fujitsu sales caused by damage to the company's brand. Some may think that this is a first world problem, especially given that the company will make £180m from a contract extension with guess who? Yes the #postoffice of course! If I may, I've got some advice for Fujitsu #topbrass. Do the right thing and set the example by committing, voluntarily, to contribute a meaningful sum to compensate the #subpostmasters and their families for the company's role in the #postofficescandal. That's the way to make good the damage to the brand - doing something tangible as opposed to just talking a good game. It could even have a snowball effect....
