Transport for London is deploying a Real Time Optimiser (RTO) system from Yunex Traffic in an effort to develop smarter traffic management in the capital. It has a serious challenge; some areas in the city, not only in the centre, are frequently subject to horrendous congestion. (I'll acknowledge an interest; I live in an area where a badly designed cycle lane and road junction has caused a serious bottleneck in traffic flows). Park Signalling has been awarded a major new contract by Network Rail to produce a Design Workstation that will support Solid State Interlocking (SSI) signalling systems in the UK. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗱𝗼𝗺 | 👏 We welcome the UK rail regulator The Office of Rail and Road (ORR)'s decision to enforce a reduction on Track Access Charges (TACs) on HS1. This will significantly encourage the entry of new rail operators - especially those aiming to compete with Eurostar - as high TACs are one of the major barriers for new entrants. We hope to see similar reductions in TACs across Europe.

European Parliament updates trans-European transport network guidelines! Today, on Wednesday 24.April, MEPs endorsed updated plans to complete major trans-European transport projects, such as cross-border roads, railways, bridges and tunnels, by the end of 2030. To eliminate bottlenecks and missing transport links, MEPs backed an update of the EU’s plan to build a network of railways, roads, inland waterways and short sea shipping routes connected through ports and terminals across the EU. Current trans-European transport (TEN-T) projects include many European links, such as, RB Rail AS | Rail Baltica connecting Helsinki and Warsaw, the Brenner Base Tunnel, linking Austria and Italy, and the Lisbon–Madrid high-speed rail line. Major transport infrastructure projects on the core TEN-T network should be completed by the end of 2030, to secure a comprehensive network by the end of 2050. To accelerate project rollout across the network, an intermediary deadline of 2040 is introduced. This development is a crucial step towards further integration and safety enhancement within Europe’s regions, opening doors for broader dialogue, collaboration, and innovation. As part of our #IPR24 this year the Commission has undertaken new analysis (see map below) of the current gaps in connectivity in #rail #infrastructure in the North and Midlands. The conclusion we come to is that a long term plan is needed to address the #connectivity, capacity and reliability issues across the #railnetwork in these regions. East-West connectivity remains an issue, especially across the Pennines, and while we think current proposals could help, more detail on scope, cost and benefits for each project - and the package of measures as a whole - is needed. North-West connectivity (esp. Birmingham to Manchester/NW) is also hampered by limitations on the scope for new capacity for #freight and #passengers, following the decision to scrap HS2 north of Birmingham. There remain critical gaps here, which can only be addressed by new infrastructure investment. We call on government in the report to examine options to address this.
