#lgim #new_etf European asset manager Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), announced the launch of the L&G Energy Transition Commodities UCITS ETF, a new fund aimed at providing investors with exposure with commodities that are key to the energy transition. Steven de Vries, Head of Wholesale UK, Europe and Latin America at LGIM, said: “Demand for strategies that provide inflation risk mitigation and uncorrelated market exposure has been significant of late, not least due to the macroeconomic backdrop. Overlay this with the uniqueness of the proposition the Energy Transition ETF presents, and this becomes a particularly compelling strategy.” According to LGIM, the new ETF provides access to a combination of commodities central to the energy transition, targeting three distinct commodity groups with supportive demand-side economics, including transition metals required for production, storage and distribution of clean energy; lower-carbon transition energy sources that can aid in addressing peak energy demand and hard-to-abate sectors, such as natural gas and ethanol, and; carbon pricing, that increases the cost of emissions and incentivizes the switch to lower-carbon activities. https://lnkd.in/dzEuMnrE

🚨 Tokenisation, stablecoins, staking - what's next for the UK?🚨 Two speeches of note today at the City & Financial Global Tokenisation Summit. 1️⃣ Sasha Mills, Executive Director for Financial Market Infrastructure at the Bank of England, talked about innovation in wholesale financial markets. 2️⃣ Tulip Siddiq, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, talked about the government's plans for crypto, stablecoins and staking. 🤔 What did they say? 1️⃣ Sasha Mills, on innovation in wholesale financial markets: Digitisation has been the combustion engine of financial markets, transforming paper-based systems to computer-based activity, on to the digital systems of today. Tokenisation can further revolutionise financial markets. Not a novel concept – but the real innovation is the type of infrastructure on which that token sits, and what that enables. ✅ Distributed ledgers can reduce the need for a single central party to perform record-keeping on the ledger. ✅ No single point of failure in how critical data is stored. ✅ Cryptographic techniques to secure data can reduce risk by improving the security and integrity of financial transactions ✅ Programmability has facilitated the consolidation and collapsing of the trade and post-trade functions, resulting in reduced settlement risk, and unprecedented efficiency gains in the trade lifecycle. 🤔 What is the Bank of England’s role in this reinvention? ✅ Digital Securities Sandbox (DSS): ➡ allows industry to experiment with developing technologies to issue, trade and settle digitally native securities, and ‘digital twin’ tokenised securities in a safe and secure environment for a range of regulated asset classes. ✅ Innovations in Money: ➡ Money needs to keep up with tokenised assets. BoE considering ways to enhance usefulness of central-bank money as a settlement asset for digital asset transactions. Also considering what additional functionality a wholesale central bank digital currency could bring. ✅ Post-trade settlement: ➡ Traditional processes are sequential and often manual, time-consuming, costly, and operationally risky for all users of financial markets. The tokenisation of securities on distributed ledgers – digital securities – offers the potential to merge trade and post-trade functions, shortening settlement cycles and offering more programmability and automation in financial transactions. 2️⃣ Tulip Siddiq, on plans for crypto, stablecoins and staking: ✅ Government to introduce regulatory regime for cryptoassets. ✅ Stablecoins to be regulated at same time as cryptoassets. ✅ Issuance and custody will be regulated. ❌ No longer a phased approach. ❌ Stablecoins not to be in scope of payment services regulation. ❌ Staking is not a Collective Investment Scheme. ............. 🤔 What's next? ⏩ Expect to see the framework early next year. The white paper on the common UNIT settlement currency has many crucial points: 59 countries express interest in joining BRICS+ and have agreed to the UNIT settlement token, which is to be traded over Project mbridge. This cross border payment system, designed by China, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the UAE, has been tested in two trades. China has paid in digital Yuan to the UAE for oil and gold, which has been remonetized. The Shanghai Gold Exchange supports a new system, with 40% of the basket being gold. The UNIT settlement token is a significant deal, as it allows all BRICS+ members to trade in their own Central Bank digital currencies. However, if imbalances arise, the UNIT settlement token will be used, holding gold within the jurisdiction of the countries that possess it. This repatriation of gold is seen as weaponization of the dollar, as the BIS has instructed countries to repatriate gold and use it as a reserve asset. The new UNIT settlement token will be gold held within the borders of the countries that possess it, ensuring that all items in the unit reserve basket are freely tradable in gold terms for spot delivery at one of the unit nodes. This will maintain monetary autonomy and allow countries to trade with one another without relying on any single central authority.

👉 Assessment of UK based on Economic Data released during September 2024 📈 Economic Activity In terms of economic activities, the UK economy in September 2024 presented mixed signals. The services sector was a key area of strength, with the S&P Global/CIPS UK Services PMI rising to 53.7, reflecting continued expansion. Retail sales were notably strong, growing by 1.10% month-on-month, indicating healthy consumer demand. The labor market showed resilience, with employment increasing by 265K in July. However, there were significant concerns in the industrial and manufacturing sectors, where production contracted by -1.00% and -0.80%, respectively, signaling potential weaknesses. Moreover, GDP growth remained flat at 0.00% in July, highlighting a lack of momentum in broader economic activity. 🖊 Inflation and Prices On the inflation and prices front, the data suggested stability. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.30% month-on-month in August, in line with forecasts, while year-on-year inflation held steady at 2.20%. The Producer Price Index (PPI) input fell by -0.50%, showing continued easing of inflationary pressures on the production side. House prices remained robust, with the Halifax House Price Index rising by 4.30% year-on-year in August. However, mortgage rates, while slightly lower, remained elevated at 7.83%, continuing to put pressure on household finances. ☀ Overall Assessment Overall, the UK economy in September 2024 showed resilience in consumer spending and the labor market, but signs of weakness in industrial output and flat GDP growth raise concerns about future economic stability. Inflation remained steady, and input prices continued to fall, which could provide relief in the months ahead. However, the contraction in manufacturing and industrial sectors suggests that these areas may need policy support to avoid dragging down overall growth. 💷 Fx and Rates The Federal Reserve has been signaling sharp rate cuts, starting with a 50 basis point reduction, which has weakened the USD. As a result, the British Pound (GBP) has benefited from this USD weakness. At the start of the month, GBP/USD was around 1.3200, dropped to 1.3050, and is now ending the month near 1.3370. At the beginning of the year, both the US and UK had similar interest rate levels. However, as of today, the average expected rate for the next two years is 3.40% for SOFR (US), which is 50 basis points lower than SONIA (UK), sitting at 3.90%. The tricky part is that, while the UK currently has 0.00% growth, its cautious approach to cutting rates is supporting the GBP for now. Multi-Strat H1 24 numbers trickling in… On track for a decent year, it seems. Lots more geopolitical events—particularly elections—due in H2, so potentially more volatility on the horizon. Having said that, the VIX is now at post-pandemic cycle lows and can’t even break 20! Are Trump, Starmer, and Le Pen already baked in??? Seems eerily complacent out there....
