For a very long time, I was working in the travel tech industry, in companies like Gogobot (Gogobot was acquired by Skycanner), Skyscanner and Expedia. One day, at a famous conference, I heard a CEO being interviewed on stage. He spoke with so much confidence, explaining just how “tech-savvy and innovative” his company was. As it happens, I was in the middle of a sale to that company. I knew what was REALLY going on there. And I knew that the CEO was just full of BS. None of what he said was true. It was actually quite the opposite. That got me thinking - what about all the salespeople trying to sell to this company? If they only knew what I knew, they wouldn't waste their time. That thought didn’t let go. It actually expanded a much bigger notion -  What if I could bring this kind of information to salespeople about all companies? What if salespeople would go into a saleprocess knowing all they needed to know about champions, stakeholders, buying groups, length of sale cycle and how to work with legal? What If this information could be both validated and shared anonymously? 2025 is going to test every business (especially in the UK). My advice? In January be ruthless. Pause all non-core projects, ditch duplicate tech tools, renegotiate all saas contracts (will save you 30%), and communicate openly—good or bad with team members and investors. The survivors of ‘25 won’t just make it—they’ll dominate for decades 🚀

VC due dilligence starts and ends with the team. The main reason VCs pass right away is they don’t believe this is THE team to do this. The middle of due dilligence is all about the market opportunity and competition. Then in the end it’s back to the team - deep dive to confirm this is THE team to do this. So it starts and ends with the team.

We recently closed a small angel round and are raising our Pre-seed at Assisterr. I want to share 2 situations just to illustrate quite a repetitive scenario I had several times recently: UK-based VC: - "Oh, your valuation is too high. Please send us more materials, but it looks too high." - Did you invest in companies in our vertical recently? - "Not really, but we have plans..."; US investors: VC: "You are too humble with this range for valuation and your traction. It should be much higher". - Thank you. We are open to discussing the exact valuation with the Lead investor. - Then, 4 hours later, I got the message from the attached screenshot.

December is one of the busiest times of the year for global travel, and the UAE certainly stands out as a top destination. Dubai alone has already reported 14.96 million overnight visitors in the first 10 months of 2024, an increase of 8% compared to the same period last year. Things will only get even busier with the coming introduction of the GCC unified tourist visa, easily one of the most anticipated developments in the region, promising to transform travel and investment in the Gulf through seamless access to the six member states (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman) under a single visa. This naturally has an enormous impact on the property sector in the UAE even as many businesses are now working hard behind the scenes to prepare for the anticipated surge in activity. With its huge advantage in terms of diverse accommodation options and world-class infrastructure, the UAE is strongly positioned to serve as a hub for inter-GCC travel with the new unified visa. Indeed, it’s not hard to see tourists and business travelers alike seeing the UAE as an ideal starting point or a base to explore the wider Gulf region, thanks largely to its unmatched connectivity, state-of-the-art facilities, and expansive housing options that cater to a wide range of budgets. In fact, I think this new development increases the appeal of establishing a foothold in the UAE and purchasing a second home here, as inter-GCC connectivity becomes more seamless and accessible. As December ushers in the holiday season, there’s certainly so much to look forward to—not just the festive celebrations but also the exciting opportunities on the horizon for the UAE and the region. Fair warning for startup founders raising capital. Funny/not funny story ahead.   I caught up with a close friend last week. He’s part of the leadership team of a tech scaleup on the hunt for growth financing. About a month or two earlier he got in touch with me saying he and his team were in London to meet with a VC and asked if I was free for a coffee (sadly, I wasn’t).    At the time, out of simple curiosity, I looked up the VC in Crunchbase and circled back to my mate because I saw the firm last raised/closed a €150 million fund in 2019, which could very well be depleted by now. I said it’s worth asking if the firm is still deploying capital - or at least ask when the firm last made investments. The question wasn't asked.   When we spoke last week, he told me the firm took him and his team through a full due diligence process, handed over a term sheet...and then took it back, saying they didn’t have any money! What kind of VC operates like this?   No doubt this is an incredibly rare case of batsh*t crazy bad luck, but the lesson here is clear for founders: Ask the hard and sometimes seemingly stupid questions, especially if you can show the data. "In the first nine months of 2023, Bolt revenue totaled $19 million, essentially flat from the same period the year earlier, The Information reported earlier this year. Since then, it’s gone through a series of board changes and disputes with its investors. Earlier this year, it offered to buy shares back from investors at a valuation of $300 million, down roughly 97% from its late 2021 valuation." So...they're now raising at a $14b valuation, which is 740x revenue? On a business that's not growing? With no demonstrated product/market fit? And as part of the fundraise, "Grooms outlines an ambitious plan for Bolt to launch a new 'super app' for consumers that will include shopping and financial management tools, suggesting the company is moving away from its focus as a checkout button on retailers’ web sites." I have to ask...is there kompromat involved here? Is someone being held hostage and this is some kind of ransom payment? Is this tech's equivalent of "The Producers"? Did they put drugs in the water supply of San Francisco? Did they discover a worm hole back to 2021? I'm really at a loss here, folks.
