Refugee Action York

Disaster and Humanitarian Relief
After being particularly moved by the recent Syrian Refugee Crisis and wanting to take positive action because of this, I started volunteering on a weekly basis at Refugee Action York (RAY). I also organised a group of students to join me in this volunteer work.

- Our student law firm was so meticulous that we achieved a 90% grade for our case filing, 20% above a first.
- Our student law firm was so organised and productive that we were the only student law firm to be offered another case file to work on as all of our assigned cases had been completed ahead of schedule. -

Supported Dr Takako Kato in the School of English at the University of Leicester in a collaborative project between the Universities of Leeds and Leicester.
This project involved providing the first full and accurate record of Latin and early-English manuscripts from c. 1060 to 1220. The analytical work of the project involved mapping out the production of this material in terms of place, date, scribes and resources, and probable purpose. It also situated English textual compilation in…Supported Dr Takako Kato in the School of English at the University of Leicester in a collaborative project between the Universities of Leeds and Leicester.
This project involved providing the first full and accurate record of Latin and early-English manuscripts from c. 1060 to 1220. The analytical work of the project involved mapping out the production of this material in terms of place, date, scribes and resources, and probable purpose. It also situated English textual compilation in its full cultural context, bridging the traditional periodization of 'Old' and 'Middle' English and bringing to prominence a significant corpus of material whose importance for understanding the impact of the Norman Conquest and its aftermath had never before been investigated.

- Shadowed His Honour Judge Brown QC at Leicester Crown Court, following a very complex case of a sensitive nature.
- I was involved in working through the case file during the case and discussing the complicated nature of the sentencing guidelines that would apply to the case.
- I was also able to work through and discuss the closing speech of the case. -

KCH Garden Square
- Completed a two week mini-pupillage shadowing a selection of barristers at KCH Garden Square in Leicester. My responsibilities involved reading various case files, assisting in challenging casework preparation, explaining complex legal information to clients and conducting legal research.
- Rising to the challenge of being able to manage and prioritise different tasks as I was aiding many different barristers in different cases throughout the pupillage.

- Preparing my own resolution, coaching and aiding other students in preparing their resolutions and proof reading, analysing and checking the facts and figures behind each delegation's resolution.
- Arguing towards my resolution in front of over 500 students, teachers and significant members of the community.

- Our delegation was awarded a total of four awards for our proficient and accomplished debating skills and our knowledgeable and well-researched resolutions.
