Spinny wheels are so last year right? It's Doggy Draw time! 😃 We've been surveying Higher Education students on what motivates them to attend, or skip class and promised amazon vouchers 🤑 to two lucky students who took part. Huge thanks to all those that completed the survey. Today we, well Peggy🐕, did the draw and we'll be notifying the winners shortly... The findings of the survey are being pulled together as we speak covering everything from what formats of class are most likely to be skipped, to some of the weirdest reasons for missing class, to how students feel classes could be improved. That's a wrap! Today we've published the fourth and final part of Dr Kevin Ruck and Richard Bailey Hon FCIPR's research into PR education. This final chapter is about public relations research and knowledge transfer. This is the part that interested me most as of course at PR Academy Ltd we are all about PR and comms education and like our teaching to be about how theory and models translate into practice. I was pleased to see that 87 per cent of respondents stated that they are interested in learning about how academic research can be applied to practice. As one respondent commented “Professional qualifications and academic research are an add value to the professional, due to the fact that they provide practical mechanisms one can use to navigate the opportunities and challenges that come with the PR profession”. Another respondent noted that “Research is of growing importance to practice and this is welcome”. However, it is worth noting that not everyone values academic research, as highlighted by the following comment: “From what I’ve seen, PR research is difficult to apply and often appears to be deliberately abstruse”. BUT - does academic research lag behind practitioner interest? Yesterday was the first day of the Girls in Marketing #DMGP2024, starting with brilliant sessions on audience insights, building customer journeys and importance of data in email marketing. These are all key parts of my job, so it was great to hear from the experts Olivia Mae Hanlon and Beth O'Malley on their top-tips and will help me to consider different ways to approach my B2C marketing. National Student Survey (NSS) 2024 Results of this massive annual Govt survey were out on Wed last week. It’s been going 20 years and is still a useful insight into the experience of students at each UK University in their final year. The data is quite hard to decipher for a first timer but Times Higher Education has crunched the numbers and ranked all 149 UK Universities as an average of the questions. The data confirms that a wide range of universities have high scores and any impression that the Russell Group (RG) hold the monopoly on “quality” is perhaps again open to question? This issue is discussed regularly on socials so these data are important. My own University of Northampton comes ahead of 22 of the 24 RG members for example, based on this ranking - excellent and deserved. Quality and great student experience in UK HE is broad, deep and wide. Our/your students are all different and the diversity of UK HE is something to celebrate. The Times Higher Education website is free but you have to register. BLOG ✍ I attended a fantastic CIM | The Chartered Institute of Marketing webinar last month led by Edwina Mullins, Founder and Owner of digital marketing agency SocialB. Working in public sector in particular, marketers are having to work with small or even zero budget. Edwina gave some great tips on how to get buy in from the very start with senior leadership teams to demonstrate how having a healthy budget can create even more effective campaigns to achieve business goals. During my time as a public relations consultant for small businesses, I've often found myself explaining this crucial aspect of the industry: you can't force writers and editors to feature your story. Instead, it's about providing them with the right information and aligning with their timelines. Success in PR is a delicate tango of pitching the right information at the right time, which requires a deep understanding of both the media landscape and the needs of the journalists. I agree! Ultimately, it's about crafting compelling narratives that resonate and capture their interest.

Are your aspirations in teaching taking a detour due to the recent NPQ funding cuts? You're not alone. Trusts across the UK share this concern, as opportunities for fully funded National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) experience significant reductions. This year's alarming slash in funded NPQ spaces has put several training providers on high alert. With the cap estimated at only 10,000 compared to last year's 40,000, schools fear the emergence of development "cold spots," particularly in underprivileged areas.
