The payment gateway Stripe migrated 1.5 PB of data into new shards. They used the following algorithm. 1. Mark data to be migrated 2. Bulk export data into new shards 3. Simultaneously, copy live data into new shards (async events) 4. Check data for correctness 5. Make clients point to new shards 6. EOW Market Updates for Tech Folk in the Trading Tech world: - There is currently a HUGE battle amongst companies for top IT Talent. Everyone is hiring. But they only want the top %, and are willing to pay for it. If you are the top %, now is a good time to engage with recruiters and gauge the market - There is a HUGE battle amongst everyone else regarding finding jobs. At the middle % there's is not much client demand and lots of people looking. Advice for people here is be flexible where you can be flexible, bed in and get through the next 6-12 months in good shape - WFH debate rages on. Trenches are dug and no man's land is full of recruiters trying to talk about it and getting shelled on both sides :) Seriously speaking, some firms are competing based on flex, some have moved on completely and want everyone back in. There's something out there for all, so choose your companies based on who meets your preferences. - Lots of heavy hitters moving Fund-to-Fund or into buy-side, expect big tech growth programmes to drop in '25 budget cycles - Trend for techies to do 3 jobs in 1 is continuing, those that can context shift effectively and maintain high quality levels are flooded with opportunity - Head says Dricus, Heart says Izzy. CTO's; stop losing out on key talent to competitors by leveraging this key (and often overlooked) component... ------------- The market is brutal in tech at the moment, the best engineers are being hunted by most firms on the street and deciding between opportunities is becoming a full-time job. The often overlooked fact companies forget is, engineers don't join companies, they join teams. And teams are formed by people. 'People buy from people' is most prevalent in talent attraction, and how talent evaluates job opportunities. Personal buy-in counts for far more than the share price or company slogans. As CTO you should be driving the feel of your company's tech hiring directly, or ensure your tech leads are representing it accurately. Ensure you're hitting these marks: ↪ Have they had significant face time with the decision maker? Do they understand that person's background, values and why they choose to be at your firm? ↪Have you asked them what questions they have, and how you (as a firm) can help? ↪ Have you given them feedback through the process, positive and negative? ↪Do they understand what success in the role looks like? ↪Do they trust you? The best companies hit these marks. Most don't. No surprises who has the highest conversion rates and therefore wastes the least time.

I spoke with 5 engineers over the last 72 hours and 4 mentioned burnout, which is astronomically high considering the amount I talk with. Looking into some recent studies... A Haystack Analytics study found a staggering 83% of developers suffer from burnout at work [Haystack Analytics Study]. JetBrains' report, "The State of Developer Ecosystem 2023," indicates 73% of developers have experienced burnout in their careers [JetBrains report]. Interesting stats from the team at Juicebox (YC S22) 📊 This is a data deep-dive for July: which technical skills were most commonly searched via the platform? 𝐓𝐎𝐓𝐏🔥📈 - Python - React - AWS Significantly, Python is searched three times more often than Node.js, which ranks fifth in search frequency. Interestingly, AWS is the only cloud provider to feature in the top 10, while GCP and Azure are ranked 18th and 26th, respectively. Machine learning and AI are also frequently searched, with both appearing in the top 15. However, I expected them to rank higher in the searches based on recent hiring trends.

Role Update: Release Manager is actually a Tech Leader who can get things done right - UK Hedge Fund Essentially - release processes are non-existent in some places and buggered in others, with many high capable developers and wider tech folk pushing stuff into production with little to no mind for the larger ecosystem. Looking for somebody who can blend Release Management, Environment Management, Build/Deployment Management, Quality Management, Project Management and Business Analysis workstreams in a hugely complex and rapidly evolving trading tech landscape to: 1) Push back to technology (devs) - likely meeting resistance 2) Build core release processes to protect the integrity of the prod environment moving forwards 3) Traverse the landscape understanding the nuances and dependencies across the board, building plans to fit 4) Maybe hiring 1 or 2 people to work in your team 5) Ideally make friends along the way, but we'll take what we can get Deep understanding of how systems communicate/general tech fundamentals is essential BUT scripting/coding etc is NOT a part of this role. Comms / Stakeholder Management skills are essential General finance experience is preferred but this is a tech-focused role (despite sitting in the Front Office) Lots of scope, lots of impact. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced an £8bn investment to construct the next-generation hyperscale datacentres in the UK. This five-year plan is set to create approximately 14,000 jobs annually, spanning various sectors such as #construction, #facilitymaintenance, #engineering, and #telecommunications, thus boosting the local economy. The exact locations of these datacentres have not been disclosed yet but will enhance the existing capacity in London. Moreover, this initiative by AWS follows the trend of major tech companies like #Google and #Microsoft expanding their cloud infrastructure in the UK. Google, for instance, is investing £790m in a new datacentre campus in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, with contractors TSL, J & D Pierce (Contracts) Ltd, and Dornan involved in the project. In this week's funding news, various innovative companies have secured significant investments. London-based Flo Health Inc., a fertility-focused period-tracking app, raised a landmark $200 million Series C from General Atlantic, valuing the startup at over $1 billion and marking it as the first “purely digital” #femtech app to achieve unicorn status. Seattle's Outpace Bio raised $144 million in Series B financing to enhance its AI-powered cell therapy solutions, bringing its total funding to around $200 million. HR folks and Hiring Managers are always asking us about salary bands for developers who are early in their career. This piece offers some insight as to what the top companies are offering. The piece shows how Junior developers at the FANG stocks are getting offered three key levers in their packages: base, bonus, and equity. And the piece shows all in and what each component looks like at each company (Apple offers a lot more salary and equity than bonus, for example). If you're trying to recruit top development talent -- it is always important to understand what components are important to the candidate. Some candidates only want base and could care less about bonus or equity others really want the visa versa. Finally, if you don't have all three of the aforementioned levers to play with -- find out what other things are important to them like vacation, the ability to work remotely from anywhere, great benefits, excellent training, and mentorship. You'll be amazed to see what happens when you unpack what's on a candidate's mind about what is important to them.

⁉️Are DevOps teams being noticed and recognised fairly within organisations⁉️ A number of DevOps Engineers & Managers explained to me that sometimes being a DevOps Engineer can be a thankless task😓 When you perform well, everything is ticking along perfectly and nobody notices😶‍🌫️ However when things go wrong, the DevOps team are the first to come under fire and receive criticism🤬 A bit like an analogy I saw that describes a DevOps team as the screen writers, video editors and camera crew behind the scenes producing a movie🎥 Without them there would be no film, but very few actually acknowledge their work unless it goes wrong😕 The psychological safety, motivation and happiness of DevOps teams is directly impacted by this issue, and organisations must ensure that they are addressing it immediately⚠️ DevOps Engineers are crucial to any organisation that they are a part of, and if your business does not treat them fairly and give appropriate recognition they will move to somewhere that does👋 If there is anyone in the DevOps space that currently feels this way or has observed this before, and would like to speak please feel free to message me directly on here. #devops #recognition #teams #psychologicalsafety
