I went from £5 p/h to founding a group of agencies doing £5m this year. A lot of new people following me so reintroducing myself: - I’m 26 - Get to choose where I work/ live/travel - Founded one of the UK’s leading ecom agency groups This is my story ⬇️ Age 14-21: → Lots of sh*tty minimum wage jobs. → 2 years on £5 p/h as a cook. → Then a labourer making £50 per day 🙃. → Had no clear focus and felt lost. → So I went travelling and spent all my ££. → Failed 5 businesses while at uni. → Became a miserable corporate slave. → Well into my overdraft and dead broke. Age 21-23: → Met my co-founder. → Needed a $1000 PayPal loan to start our agency. → Did cold outreach for months to sign our first clients. → Worked for almost nothing, trusted the process. Age 23-27: → Slowly built our reputation as ecom experts and marketers. → Built a team that took 2x agencies to 7 figures and 1x to 6 figures. → Building a holding company to do everything ecom for DTC brands. → Travelling the world, enjoying freedom, and having fun doing what I do. Over the past 6 years, we've helped over 100 B2B companies with their marketing. But marketing is only one part of a successful go-to-market strategy, so we've created the 'B2B GTM Happiness Matrix' to help companies diagnose where the wider business issues could lie. Over the years, we've seen first hand the knock on effect of missing one of these components. Let's break it down: 1. Lack of a good product/service. This one is simple and obvious to detect. Churn is high (as good marketing can't paper over those cracks) and social proof is sparse and hard to generate. 2. Lack of clear positioning. If your product is a 'good fit for everyone' you will spread yourself too thin on multiple fronts, including: - budget, as you need to compete across the board. - consistent case study angles, as you're solving different pains for different clients. - sales resource, as they will need to spend more time qualifying & learning about new applications of the product/service. - profit margin, as chances are you're now competing in a highly competitive price-sensitive race to the bottom. - marketing resource, as you'll want to keep adding new target segments. 3. Lack of set KPIs. This is important at both a company & marketing level. A company without financial targets is never happy, and the directive is always 'more' - even if the going is good. This bleeds into marketing tactics. If the objective is just 'more,' this can quickly turn into over-indexing on channels, pushing them to the point of diminished returns. 4. Lack of marketing strategy. Marketing activity is the process of working out the best way a company can amplify their competitive advantage to their target audience. Skipping this stage and diving straight into tactics usually consists of, at best, templated marketing, but more often copying what competitors have done. This results in Slack messages saying 'look what these guys are doing; should we try something similar?' being put regularly into action. You can usually identify when this is the case because there is loads of random activity going on, with varied results and no proper feedback loop for testing. 5. Lack of marketing execution. This comes in two forms: - Everything is theoretical & never gets done. - Tactics being implemented poorly. The easiest way to identify this: you are only growing through referrals despite having a marketing strategy outlining other acquisition plays. 6. Lack of sales alignment. I've grouped a few things together here, from: - sales not sure which front they are competing on. For example, being educated on how they are positioned & where they win the most deals. - a poor or bloated sales process, or even being slow to respond. - not updating CRM data with relevant lead data for marketing - even pricing/deal structure. Happy Monday all, it's a new week ahead and a great chance this week to drop a message to those customers you haven't spoken to in a while. If you’re in the SaaS space, you know how critical it is to keep an eye on Customer Lifetime Value (LTV). This isn’t just a metric, I believe having a keen focus on this is a game changer. LTV shows how much value your customers bring over their entire journey with you, and a high LTV means they’re engaged, satisfied, and sticking around for the long haul = more revenue to help scale your SaaS brand and to put back into acquiring new customers. 👌 I've previously worked in Senior Marketing roles focused on Customer Retention for SaaS brands and there are lots of ways you can keep your existing customers happy with some simple #automations and repurposing the content you already have. As when you focus on improving LTV, you’re not just investing in customer retention, you’re making smarter decisions on acquisition costs and scaling your business sustainably. So, let’s prioritise building lasting relationships and delivering value! Here are a few tactics I've previously used: - Regular #NPS Surveys to gain valuable feedback you can share with the Customer Success Managers (also Promoters are ideal for asking for a Review, Case Study, Testimonial, Referral Program, so it's a Win Win 🏆) - Triggered Automations on Features that are not being used (I've used a combination of Intercom and Segment for this, to trigger emails i.e. if things like email credits are running low or they have not used a particular feature, or have not logged into the App in a specific amount of time to give them a prompt and guidance) - Build an Online Training Course for your Solution (I previously used Thinkific and I literally took the information off our Support site and turned it into an easily digestible Course with a Quiz after each section, this gives you insight into if a customer gets stuck on a particular part, give badges after completion to empower them. Training Courses are also amazing for helping onboard new prospects when they are in the Trial period and free's up a lot of Support time) What strategies have you found effective for boosting LTV? In 2024, Conor Sunderland and I run a successful retention agency. And over the past 3+ years, we've: ✅ Helped 70+ eCom brands scale their business ✅ Built a team of highly capable marketers ✅ Established a network of incredible founders ✅ Created relationships that (I hope) will last a lifetime Looking around, life looks pretty good. But to say the road has been bumpy would be putting it mildly. People on social media love to sell the entrepreneurial lifestyle. The problem is, no one talks about how hard it can be - especially when you're first starting. For us, one of the biggest obstacles we faced in the early days was generating leads for the agency. And we made a ton of mistakes trying to figure it out: We wasted thousands (!!!) on cold email campaigns. We foolishly relied on Twitter for leads. And for some reason, we went to work out of Marbella - even though we were broke. Yet somehow, we made it through. We kept pushing on, making mistakes and learning as we went. We figured out our lead-gen issues. And as new problems kept coming up, we figured those out too. The point is... Being an entrepreneur is great. But it's not the plain sailing journey people will try and sell you online. And I'm yet to meet a founder who had an easy journey. The good news? If you can push through those hard times, stick with it, and keep solving problems, it will all be worth it in the end.

There's nothing like a bit of B2B buzzword bingo in Top Trump form... Which is exactly what Russ Powell and the team at Sharper B2B Marketing shaped up and sent across to me last week. A lovely little drop, thanks team 😂 While not the top trump itself (shoot your best guess), I'd have Gated Content as mine, for this description alone: "Only for the highest of high value assets (which doesn't include your latest eBook)" I'm a big believer in this. Gated content works when it's... 👌 The right content (high value = insights led with a unique perspective) 👌 Delivered at the right time (where previous content has already built trust) IMO, if you're gating most of your long form content to hit KPIs off the bat (MQLs, downloads, leads etc) then you're doing it all wrong. Give your 'good' content away. For free. Make it accessible. Get it building trust. Show your worth. Gate your secret sauce. Everything else should help the marinade. Chef's kiss.

Attribution is broken; it's time to change. Ok sherlock, we know this already... We run ads on Meta, Google, Bing & Amazon for our supplement business. Tracking attribution has always been super hard due to the nature of the customer's journey. Whilst we could delve super deep and waste 100's of hours without much insight, we focus on this simple method; Overall digital ad spend divided by new-to-brand customers = blended CPA. Distributing the budget is not easy, but it's far easier to scale up and saves you tons of hours! It also allows you to explore new platforms without worrying about individual platform ROI. How are you managing attribution?

Traditional B2B Sales Experience: Manager to Sales Rep: "What are you working on?" Sales Rep: "Oh, I'm just doing some prospect research here on LinkedIn." Manager: "Ok." Sales Rep: "Yes, I've spent the last two hours building a list of 10 people to contact. I know they went to university at Oxford, so I'll work this into my pitch. I'm sure this will make the difference." Manager: "When are you making calls?" Sales Rep: "What I like to do is a multi-channel approach. First, I'll like their posts, then a day later I'll follow them. After that, I'll send them an email, then connect with them the next day, and then send another email..." Manager: "What about just picking up the phone and calling them?" This is the antithesis of what the Lead Gen Department is. A sales rep like this wouldn’t last a day here. They would either be making calls or wasting another company’s time and money. But they won’t be wasting our clients’ money. Put simply, our clients want results. It’s amazing what can happen when you throw out all the "multi-channel garbage" and just pick up the phone to have a real conversation with a decision-maker. Of course, we use LinkedIn and email too, but far too much attention is given to all these different touchpoints. In my opinion, just pick up the phone and call. When you have professional, experienced team members, you can cut through all this noise with a quick call.

I promised Lee Anderson a list of things we did to get incredibly high google rankings👇 1 - General good practice. Proper page headers and tags, fast loading & mobile freindly 2 - Write the pages as if you were explaining things to your mate in the pub, you will know far more than you think about your area of expertise, explain it in basic terms, split it into sections and pages, make them informative, not too long and link them, you want the reader to click another page. Update your site often 3 - Google reviews, as many as possible as regular as possible and keep them coming constantly 4 - Social Media, post loads of content daily on the channels you like and link to your website, it can only be good google sees you are alive every day. Facebook ads are a cheap way to throw quick eyes on your page which might help 5 - Backlinks - get any customers or suppliers who agree to do small write ups with links to your website on there website I am sure there is loads more things and a lot of this is speculaction but it’s the main things we did and now we get shed loads of organic visitors every day. It’s really hard intense work to actually do you have to be incredibly focussed and committed if you can’t then you best get a 3rd party to help but remember they can’t do point 2 which is the main one This is the kind of info I wrote up there are quite a few pages though all covering different things

“How much should we spend on performance marketing?” Working out how much to invest sounds simple but can be a challenge to get right, particularly if you've not invested heavily in performance marketing channels before. The genuine answer to this should centre around how much you want to achieve. You can then reverse engineer back to a suitable budget with as much factual data used in your calculations as possible. Points you should consider: - Current cost per qualified lead / cost per sale - If planning for improvements, what do you realistically believe you can achieve on the above? - Lifetime value - how much is each customer worth over their lifetime? - Margins - based on the revenue from the above, what are your expected margins? - How much are you willing to invest per new customer? Do you need to make a profit, or can you take a hit in return for growing / scaling a customer base? - Creative - how much do you have available, do you have resource in house, or do you need to outsource creative? - What historic data do you have available to use with forecasting future results? The more you have the more accurate your forecasts will be.

Where referrals are concerned, I've been dining out on some stats from The Wow Company's brilliant Benchpress survey for the last couple of years. Their latest report revealed that the situation has got worse; more agencies than ever are relying on referrals to fill their pipeline. Yet, even fewer are doing anything to proactively increase the quality or quantity of those referrals. I think this is utter madness, especially during these slightly wobbly times when leads are hard to come by. #businessdevelopment #newbusiness #referrals #agencies

Search and AI News - Search the web is now part of Chat GPT. To be honest SEO had got a bit stagnant over the last five or so years so I am excited to have this AI evolution to play with 😀. SEO was so much fun from 1999 to 2015 so it is great that we have change coming and a new challange.
