The new report published this week by Universities Wales makes for some incredibly encouraging reading with regard to the value that Wales’ higher education sector adds to the wider economy. Some of the highlights include that Welsh universities’teaching, research and innovation activities makes an impact of £10.97 billion to the UK economy. And not only that – every £1 of public money put into universities across Wales generates over £13 of economic impact.That’s a cost to benefit ratio of 13.1 to 1 – an enviable ratio for most industries. At a time of immense challenge for the sector, this report strongly evidences the economic impact of Welsh universities and demonstrates the value that universities add – not only benefiting our local communities but also contributing to the national economy. Welsh institutions are crucial in driving forward innovation and economic growth, as well as shaping the future of individuals and wider society. I’m enormously proud of the highly skilled graduates that we produce here at Wrexham University, as well as our important research and our support of other sectors through our knowledge transfers. Our universities here in Wales hold the keys to unlocking future potential, opportunities, as well as addressing some of our biggest challenges in society.

🌱 #GreeningEducation with Eco-Schools 🌱 In the 2023-24 school year, our Eco-Schools programme in #England has continued to inspire and empower young minds to take action for a sustainable future. Here's what we’ve achieved together: 🔸 1.4 million pupils participated in schools implementing Eco-Schools in England. 🔸 50,303 pupils joined Eco-Committees, taking the lead in their schools’ sustainability journey. 🔸 7,623 adults and 120,508 external collaborators engaged in Eco-Schools activities, building a community of change-makers. The impact is clear: 💡 97.4% of educators report Eco-Schools improved #leadership and #teamwork among students. 💪 96.9% saw increased confidence in their pupils. 🌍 98.2% noted a boost in environmental awareness in their institutions. 🧠 70.4% felt the programme helped reduce eco-anxiety among young people. 💚 98.3% said it developed essential 'green skills,' preparing students for a sustainable future. 🏘️ 83.2% saw a positive impact on their local communities. These numbers tell a powerful story of how education can drive real change. Together, we’re shaping a generation of leaders ready to tackle the challenges of the 21st century. Digital tools promise cost-effective, timely data for informed decision-making, offering time-saving benefits over paper-based methods. We assessed 50 tools, diving deep into four, to provide insights into their uses and challenges. Our report examines data collection and visualisation tools in education across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and highlights the key insights and gaps in the market and what support should be provided to fill these gaps. We agree wholeheartedly with both Nicholas Hillman & Amy Baker. The last thing the sector needs is the “status quo!” It needs change! The Graduate Route is in no way guaranteed, to quote Hillman its “future remains secure for now.” The sector nearly lost it prior to the election & we hear on good authority it was only through intervention by David Cameron that the Torys kept it in its present form! Net migration figures will determine the #future of the #GraduateRoute, as Keir Starmer’s government is committed to reducing #immigration, one way or another! Amy Baker is also spot on when she says “more cohesive action” is needed to ensure that international #graduates secure meaningful #employment.” This does not just mean employment in the UK, a large part is supporting #internationalstudents get #jobs back home, directly after their UK #degree &/or after a period of #poststudywork. #Universities must be seen by government to be “singing from the same hym sheet when it comes to reducing immigration, driving UK #softpower abroad & increasing foreign direct investment into the UK. “I don’t want stability, I want instability,” said Nick Hillman, director of the Higher Education Policy Institute noting progressive and positive shake-ups that could be brought in such as an EU youth mobility scheme inclusive of the UK or improved post-study work rights. For Hillman, it’s crucial for the sector to reach a consensus on its priorities and how they can support the government in driving economic growth – whether that means reversing the dependant rule, reducing #visa fees, or refining postgraduate work opportunities. The sector must be ready with clear answers when the government eventually seeks its input. After a period of uncertainty for the UK’s Graduate Route, which underwent a review by the Migration Advisory Committee under the previous Conservative government, its future remains secure for now. For Amy Baker, CEO of The PIE, the focus has shifted to ensuring the Graduate Route truly benefits international students. The sector must strengthen collaboration with employers to highlight the benefits of hiring international students, said Baker, calling for “more cohesive action” to ensure that international graduates secure meaningful employment.
