Fascinating - and sad - to see the results of this survey on #MentalHealth in the #PR industry. TL;DR it's not good. Remember folks - reaching out for help is a sign of strength. There are some amazing counsellors out there who can help. It comes with the job and, sometimes, is the frisson of excitement that brings us to the laptop each day. But that frisson needs to be well managed. Think of it like physical fitness - many of us try to eat well, go for a walk (if not the gym) and do other things to keep us physically OK. Mental health should be no different. Supportive practices, friends and finding the right professional for a tune-up shouldn't be anything uncommon. In fact, I'd argue that these should be regular occurances to stay on top of things, before things get on top of us (which is often the only time people seek out support). This week our CEO, Vicki Bates, is touring the UK, mixing a bit of business with pleasure. We asked for her thoughts on what the differences are between an Executive Assistant based in the UK compared to one based in North America. Here is a summary of her response: That sounds like an interesting topic for a LinkedIn post! Here's a short post highlighting some potential differences between an executive assistant working in the UK and North America 🇬🇧🇺🇸: While the role of an executive assistant is crucial in any business setting, in my opinion, there are some notable differences in expectations and practices between the UK and North America. 1. **Communication Style**: In the UK, communication tends to be more formal and reserved, whereas in North America, it can be more direct and informal. 2. **Work Hours**: North American workdays often start earlier and finish later compared to the traditional 9-to-5 in the UK. 3. **Holiday Allowance**: UK employees generally have more mandated vacation days, whereas North American employees might have fewer days but more public holidays. 4. **Technology Use**: North American companies often embrace newer technologies and tools for productivity, while the UK may be more conservative in adopting new tech. 5. **Cultural Nuances**: Understanding cultural norms and business etiquette is crucial. North American assistants might prioritize networking and relationship-building, whereas UK assistants may focus more on protocol and hierarchy. While these differences exist, the core responsibilities of an executive assistant remain universal: supporting executives, managing schedules, and ensuring smooth operations. “brand is of “utmost importance” in today’s “commoditised market.” The term ‘performance marketing’ has swayed budgets away from brand marketing, as managers understand performance but struggle to understand value in brand marketing. I’ve conducted hours of research for B2B clients over the last 12 months & the things their customers remember them for relate to the brand. They are culture, apprenticeships, training and invest in people, innovation (product & service), (personal) relationships, integrity and other value-based behaviour. These things require marketing to bring them to life, ‘lifting the lid’ on what you believe in, the people behind the business, the activities that make the business special and unique. Communicating these things creates distinctiveness in competitive markets. It’s good to invest in performance marketing too, however it’s the brand marketing that will help a business stand out, create memorability for your audience and enable buyers to connect more personally.
