Breaking news on low carbon and the Labour Manifesto …… Key strategies include: - Introducing a carbon border adjustment mechanism to protect British industries and meet climate objectives. - Ensuring the institutional framework supports reaching net zero and meeting carbon budgets. - Mandating UK-regulated financial institutions to implement credible transition plans aligning with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement. ### Heat Pumps and Low Carbon Heating Support the widespread adoption of low-carbon heating solutions, including heat pumps, through: - Offering grants and low-interest loans under the Warm Homes Plan to support the installation of heat pumps and other low-carbon heating systems. - Ensuring private rented sector homes meet minimum energy efficiency standards by 2030. ### Solar PV To expand solar power usage, Labour intends to: - Triple solar power capacity by 2030 as part of the mission to deliver clean power. - Provide support through the Warm Homes Plan for solar panel installations. - Deploy more distributed production capacity through the Local Power Plan, partnering with local authorities and cooperatives for community-based solar projects. ### Insulating Homes Labour's manifesto highlights a significant focus on improving energy efficiency in homes through: - Investing an extra £6.6 billion over the next parliament to upgrade five million homes, aiming to reduce bills and fuel poverty. - Providing grants and low-interest loans for insulation and other improvements. - Working with combined authorities, local, and devolved governments to roll out the Warm Homes Plan. - Ensuring that no one will be forced to replace their boiler as a result of these plans. ### Details on the Warm Homes Plan The Warm Homes Plan is a cornerstone of Labour's strategy to improve energy efficiency in homes. Key elements include: - Offering grants and low-interest loans to support investment in insulation, solar panels, batteries, and low-carbon heating solutions. - Partnering with combined authorities, local and devolved governments for a comprehensive rollout. - Collaborating with the private sector, including banks and building societies, to provide additional private finance to accelerate home upgrades and low-carbon heating. - Ensuring homes in the private rented sector meet minimum energy efficiency standards by 2030, which will save renters hundreds of pounds per year. - Guaranteeing that no one will be forced to remove their boiler as part of these improvements. ### Training on Low Carbon Technologies To support the transition to a green economy, Labour plans to: - Establish Skills England to bring together businesses, training providers, and unions with national and local government to ensure a highly trained workforce for the Industrial Strategy. - Devolve adult skills funding to Combined Authorities - Reform the Apprenticeships Levy to create a flexible Growth and Skills Levy. If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

🌍 The Future of Climate Risk Reporting As climate-related reporting regulations ramp up, it's not just crucial but required for organisations to adopt climate-based reporting. This move not only boosts financial transparency but also aligns with global standards and attracts international capital. Good for the environment and good for business! Effective climate risk disclosures ensure climate impacts are central to business decisions and provide accountability for mitigating environmental risks. CSIRO's work in this space highlights how design-led approaches can improve climate risk reporting. Using Generative AI to assess these claims is a fantastic use case, and their pilot project offers innovative ways to enhance report integrity. This isn't just about tech—it's about understanding the complex systems we operate in, from economics and politics to society and nature. Digital Village was fortunate to assist in exploring these relationships through the facilitation of a Warm Data Lab, ensuring these AI systems are designed responsibly with all stakeholders in mind. The Simpler Recycling initiative moved forward in 2024 with the new government adding some much needed reassurance in the Autumn. The policy update in November set out this government’s plans to introduce Simpler Recycling in England ("subject to spending review outcomes"). The #SimplerRecycling policy still aims to make recycling easier for people in England, by making collections consistent for all households, businesses and relevant non-domestic premises (such as schools and hospitals). Simpler Recycling ensures more consistent, more streamlined collections but can make waste management a challenge for some local authorities. Many have not provided a collection service for food waste previously. The new default requirement for most households and workplaces will be 4 containers for: * residual (non-recyclable) waste * food waste (mixed with garden waste if appropriate) * paper and card * all other dry recyclable materials (plastic, metal and glass) These may be various container types, including bags, bins or stackable boxes. This is the government’s maximum default requirement and is not expected to increase in the future. However - and this is the important bit - "councils and other waste collectors will still have the flexibility to make the best choices to suit local need". A number of ISL clients have called upon our route optimisation software & services to help them prepare for Simpler Recycling and the introduction of #foodwaste collections. The added demands while driving new routes and on the kerbside have led many local authorities to invest in new technology, especially in-vehicle. 2025 will be an extremely busy and challenging year for #municipal services, especially those related to #wastemanagement, as the Simpler Recycling policy kicks-in. More ambitious targets for the UK on reaching Net Zero 🌎 Talking the talk is great, but at some point we have to walk the walk 🍃 We are way behind our European partners on deployment of renewables like Solar & Heat Pumps. We also have some of the most expensive electricity in the world 🤯 2035 is not far away, we are still fitting 1.7m boilers each year and then are still increasingly exposed to volatile energy prices because of our reliance on imported gas 🙄 https://lnkd.in/esnARncY

Planned reforms to tackle e-waste in the UK 👉 New government reforms will require online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay to take greater responsibility for e-waste recycling. This levels the playing field for UK-based retailers and ensures overseas sellers contribute to recycling costs, a significant step toward a sustainable, circular economy. The government will require online marketplaces to register with the Environment Agency and report UK sales from overseas sellers. This data will be used to calculate the financial contribution online marketplaces must make towards the costs of recycling e-waste. To illustrate the vast scale of e-waste, Material Focus estimates that British households throw away over 100,000 tonnes of smaller household electrical items, such as kettles and lamps every year. ♻️ What these reforms will involve: 👉 Online platforms must shoulder their fair share of recycling costs. 👉 A dedicated category for e-waste from vapes will streamline recycling efforts. 👉 Greater focus on repair, reuse and sustainable product lifecycles to align with circular economy goals. This is a much-needed step forward. I hope it motivates more manufacturers to design sustainable products that are easier to repair, refurbish, and recycle at the end of their lifecycle. 2024 Sustainability Action Report by Deloitte. Scope 3 Emissions: Low Reporting Levels: Only 15% of respondents currently prepare and disclose Scope 3 GHG emissions. This is significantly lower compared to the 74% reporting Scope 1 emissions and 53% reporting Scope 2 emissions. Challenges in Reporting: The top challenges in measuring Scope 3 GHG emissions include: Lack of confidence and completeness in primary data from supply chain partners (64%). Inconsistent industry standards and methodologies (50%). Lack of education and specialist resources (43%). Data availability (27%). Regulatory Requirements: Although the final SEC climate disclosure rule does not specifically require Scope 3 GHG emissions reporting, other frameworks like CSRD, California Climate Legislation, and IFRS S2 do require it. Private vs. Public Companies: Private companies are reportedly more prepared to disclose Scope 3 GHG emissions (24%) compared to public companies.
