I've just been catching up on the latest news in the world of MIS support and switching - in particular with regards to ESS' recent message to Scomis-supported schools, courtesy of the recent WhichMIS? article below. Basically, earlier this month one of the largest school support teams in England, Scomis, announced that they would no longer be an accredited SIMS support partner after March 2025 (big news when you consider that, at one point, almost all Local Authority support teams were SIMS - I'll put a link to my original post on this in comments). Their schools have now received an email from ESS which talks about unlawfulness, breaching contracts, IPR infringement and liability. It also suggests Scomis, part of Devon County Council is favouring one business over another - despite them hosting discovery days for the largest three MIS this year and being clear on all the support options for each. When it comes to switching MIS, the email also refers to migration methods and specifically mentions Bromcom's 'Migration-X' method as infringing IPR if it were to be used - something that seems to contradict the info on their website (info below on that too). I'm sure both companies will respond to the email in their own ways, but my big question here is: if you were a Headteacher or School Business Manager on the receiving end of an email such as this, what would you do next? 🤔 #MIS #switchMIS #edtech #data #schools #education #MATs #academies #schoolsupport

We agree wholeheartedly with both Nicholas Hillman & Amy Baker. The last thing the sector needs is the “status quo!” It needs change! The Graduate Route is in no way guaranteed, to quote Hillman its “future remains secure for now.” The sector nearly lost it prior to the election & we hear on good authority it was only through intervention by David Cameron that the Torys kept it in its present form! Net migration figures will determine the #future of the #GraduateRoute, as Keir Starmer’s government is committed to reducing #immigration, one way or another! Amy Baker is also spot on when she says “more cohesive action” is needed to ensure that international #graduates secure meaningful #employment.” This does not just mean employment in the UK, a large part is supporting #internationalstudents get #jobs back home, directly after their UK #degree &/or after a period of #poststudywork. #Universities must be seen by government to be “singing from the same hym sheet when it comes to reducing immigration, driving UK #softpower abroad & increasing foreign direct investment into the UK. “I don’t want stability, I want instability,” said Nick Hillman, director of the Higher Education Policy Institute noting progressive and positive shake-ups that could be brought in such as an EU youth mobility scheme inclusive of the UK or improved post-study work rights. For Hillman, it’s crucial for the sector to reach a consensus on its priorities and how they can support the government in driving economic growth – whether that means reversing the dependant rule, reducing #visa fees, or refining postgraduate work opportunities. The sector must be ready with clear answers when the government eventually seeks its input. After a period of uncertainty for the UK’s Graduate Route, which underwent a review by the Migration Advisory Committee under the previous Conservative government, its future remains secure for now. For Amy Baker, CEO of The PIE, the focus has shifted to ensuring the Graduate Route truly benefits international students. The sector must strengthen collaboration with employers to highlight the benefits of hiring international students, said Baker, calling for “more cohesive action” to ensure that international graduates secure meaningful employment. For all the recruitment and retention challenges in schools and MATs, there’s one big question that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves: WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO MAKE RECRUITMENT WORK BETTER? In many Trusts, recruitment and workforce planning are handled within HR teams already stretched thin. There may be limited capacity to re-think processes from the ground up. And supply staffing is often treated as a procurement issue — separate from wider people/recruitment efforts and based mainly on a simple cost comparison chart. Some trusts are starting to invest in organisational development and people leadership roles, which is encouraging. But it’s still early days for most. Meanwhile, MATs are wrestling with some of the toughest hiring challenges out there: - Finding and keeping great teachers and specialists. - Filling vital but often overlooked support roles like cleaners, facilities and estates teams that keep things running. - Ensuring reliable access to quality supply staff in time-constrained settings. None of this is easy. Recruitment in education is complex and high touch. The reality is that most MATs are doing the best they can with the resources and systems available to them. Without a cohesive and easily understandable framework for managing recruitment, supply and workforce planning, it’s almost impossible to move from reactive to proactive. That means that recruitment challenges persist at the local level. Most MAT leaders I’ve spoken to about this express the desire to do things differently and to be able to help their Heads out more proactively. That’s where a modern recruitment stack comes in. With the right systems in place, Trusts can: - Build and manage a strong and compliant talent pipeline across teaching and support roles. - Help alleviate supply staffing headaches for headteachers with clear, coordinated processes. - Get better visibility and control over the workforce and meet them where they are in terms of career pathways and flexibility. Recruiters making the most progress are asking forward-thinking questions: - How do we attract and engage talent BEFORE we’re desperate to hire? - Are we creating systems that work for our teams AND the people we work with? - What tools and processes will make recruitment SIMPLER, SMARTER, and MORE EFFECTIVE? Education recruitment is hard. But it’s also one of the biggest opportunities for MATs to transform outcomes for schools, staff, and pupils. What’s your take?
