Today the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have ruled against Entrepreneur Grace Beverley effectively saying: Social media influencers who are also brand owners must mark their brand-related content as ads. This is a ridiculously ruling. In my mind this has the potential to have no end. For example, every LinkedIn Post a Founder, management or sales person writes could fall under the same regulation as the ruling. Grace is an incredible Entrepreneur and her followers and the world knows that she is also running and investing in a number of incredible businesses. E.g TALA & SHREDDY I have previously dealt with the ASA in the early days of my first business where we worked alongside them to develop the industry standard of #AD. This was to assure that consumer were not misled by content and that there was an element of transparency between content creator and audience. This ruling goes too far and I believe it could have a wider impact on traditional business owners looking to build a personal brand. I really hope the ASA rethink this.

Zero acquisition cost = ZAC Sadly in this day and age ZAC (this is a made up term btw) within most industries is pretty much non-existent (there are very few edge cases). HOWEVER What about if Amazon are paying for your Google ads? Literally the dream if you’re in Ecommerce. Well, it’s not quite as hard as you think. It took us around a year to get Amazon bidding on our ideal bottom of the funnel key terms: Example attached: ”Biotin Supplement” How did we get Amazon to spend their $ on our little brand Amazon FBA brand? ✔️ Top 10 in category ✔️ High conversion rate product (we currently convert at 38%), the average is around 10-15% ✔️ Amazon Choice badge As I mentioned earlier there is no ZAC - we had to fund the original meta ads, Google ads etc. to our listing to drive conversions, which drove repeat customers (improves conv rate). However once you’ve built this flywheel, not only do you rank well organically on Amazon but you COULD end up with Amazon spending their marketing dollars on Google for your product = win win. We’re not 100% sure what triggers Amazon to spend on your product on Google and this is anecdotal to our product, but this is what worked for us!!

"If you're having the brand vs performance discussion you've already outed yourself as not understanding modern marketing." Tim Doyle commented this underneath a popular MW article on AirBnBs public announcement about their switch from 'performance' to ' brand'. The truth is, at the time they were struggling for yield with rival Booking . com out competing them in search. They were in the depths of a once in 100 year pandemic which had up-ended demand. And they'd already been doing 'brand marketing' for years. But what even is brand? This recent Warc report shows a further move away from 'brand' and into 'performance' (see below). Why is that? Maybe companies are investing less in 'Long-term brand' for the simple reason, it doesn't work like it used to. Much has changed in the media landscape. TV is on a steady slide and podcast interviews are swinging elections. And many believe brand marketing is a media/channel discussion, when it's not. So is the definition of 'brand marketing' the problem? And what even is 'brand'? What is the modern brand building #strategy Tim refers to? Escape the industry noise and agency sales pitches. Close off funding rounds Ramp up lead generation Focus on conversion Agree partnerships Run events Attend events Test messaging/channels Etc etc Before August goes quiet and everyone disappears on holiday (or juggles school holidays!) Now is the time to get that eight week plan together, the KPIs, the marketing campaigns, sales targets and push funding conversations forward.
