Technical tests ⚡ What's the best way to assess the technical proficiency? A full project that takes a weekend to complete 👨‍💻 A pair programming session 💻 A Q&A style assessment on an online portal 📕 There still seems to be a lot of variation in how businesses assess potential candidates. I had a situation this week where a candidate would have preferred to do a full project over a weekend over a 45 minute pair programming session. Had others point blank refuse to spend their free time completing an exercise. I've seen candidates breeze through a technical assessment but leave 6 months later as they couldn't do the job. Candidates fail seemingly simple tech tests and turn up in much more prestigious organisations months later. I know it is different with contractors with a body of work and ample referencing for previous delivery. But for mid-level developer roles where proposed candidates have worked a couple of perm roles, what is the best way to assess their technical capability for what is to come in the role? Can a technical conversation suffice?

While not always deal-breakers, these are worth a closer look: 📉 Inconsistent Career Path Frequent job changes without clear reasons or progression can be concerning. In tech, long-term projects often require stability, and short stints might suggest a lack of commitment or adaptability. 🗨️ Buzzwords Without Backing Buzzwords like “AI expert” or “cloud specialist” need substance. Without specific examples—projects delivered, tools used, or measurable results—they don’t add much value. 📄 Generic CVs A CV that isn’t tailored to the role can indicate a lack of interest or effort. I am currently working a Lead Cloud Engineering role and I'm keen to hear your take on the market. There was a large boom in the market in 2022 which inflated salaries due to the demand and in my experience, it's continuing to carry on into 2025. Here are some statistics that highlight this trend: ✅ Job Demand: The demand for cloud engineers is surging, with numerous job openings across various platforms. For instance, LinkedIn currently lists over 200,000 cloud engineering roles globally, reflecting the critical need for expertise in this area. Within the UK, there are currently over 5,000 jobs on LinkedIn who are looking for experience with AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, as well as skills in Kubernetes and Terraform. In an ever more global market, this is leading to a war for talent in this space! ✅ Salary Potential: In the UK, cloud engineers earn an average salary of £70,952, with senior positions commanding higher figures according to Reed. ✅ Key Drivers: The industry's growth is fuelled by the adoption of multi-cloud strategies, the integration of AI and machine learning, and focus on sustainability within cloud operations. A few weeks ago I spoke with a CTO that had been looking for an Embedded Software Engineer for 4 months. 🧐 They had tried to advertise the position on multiple channels -> 100+ applications -> 3 interviews -> 0 hires. 😶 They had tried to work with three recruitment agencies -> 13 CVs received -> 3 interviews -> 0 hires. 😑 Yesterday afternoon the only candidate I submitted, was hired. 😶‍🌫️ What was the difference? A 30 minutes long scheduled and prepared discovery meeting vs "I don't have time for a call" given to the other agencies. ✅ After the meeting, I understood the company, their mission, their culture and what type of candidate would fit perfectly in their team. 😊 This allowed me to present the company as if it was my own, while the other agencies only knew what keywords to put into LinkedIn recruiter. 😎 If you "spray and pray" your vacancy to recruiters, they will "spray and pray" it to the market and will then "spray and pray" you with irrelevant or mediocre CVs. 😑 Minimising communication will not save you any time. ✅ Instead, choose a niche recruiter specialised in what you're hiring for -> set up a discovery call -> and be positively surprised. Quality over Quantity 🚀 I've noticed a trend recently from our partners on how they are struggling with Engineering recruitment, especially DevOps and Cloud Engineering. This being due to profiles not being relevant to the specifics of the role and high volume of CV's being sent because they have "Buzz words". Recently enough, I was helping one of our new partners look for a Senior Platform Engineer as they had struggled to get the right candidate. They had over 15 profiles sent across and conducted 8 interviews but none were right. After a great call with the Engineering Manager, I sent 3 great Engineers who fit the bill on all fronts. Happy Thursday guys! Today I wanted to speak about the current gap in the tech market that has been ongoing for a while. It has been a candidate driven market for the last few months, however there is still a gap in terms of the skillsets required by clients , and those that candidates possess. How do we address this? - For candidates that may have lack of experience, there should potentially be an additional requirement whereby they have an option to attend training or certification to be qualified for the role as well as long as they have a good attitude and passion for technology - Soft skills & attitude should also be considered as part of the hiring process as if we are only hiring for skills and not for character, what does that say about culture?
