Today, Understanding Patient Data has published a new report by White Tail Consulting based on in-depth interviews with leaders from Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) across England about how ICSs use patient data. The findings of the report show considerable variation in maturity of ICS data infrastructure, sharing and use, with some systems and areas better able to realise the opportunities of using data to improve population health. Despite challenges relating to variation across the country, capacity, organisational culture and development of data skills, and recruitment and retention of staff, participants report a desire to collaborate to drive improvements in the use of data nationally, with many examples of best practice already present. NHS trusts have some way to go on #digitalmaturity, the new snapshot report examining the Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA) scores of NHS trusts across England from Digital Health reveals. Out of seven success measures, ‘Ensure smart foundations’ emerged as the top-performing measure across all trusts, but with an average score of 3.2 out of five. The NHS Community Health Services Data Plan contains a clear vision to provide a 'single source of the truth'. It states that data about community health services must be relevant, good quality, linkable, consistently defined and of low burden for providers to collect. NHS England has said it will develop an aligned, strategic approach to primary and community data development that supports integrated care by March 2026 - but progress can be made now, especially with EPR interoperability. The guidance states that limited #interoperability of provider IT systems and complex information governance (IG) procedures make it difficult to deliver and plan joined up, integrated care locally. The report rightly highlights the need for a focus on clearly defined national health innovation priorities, incentivising the partnership working required to deliver innovation, and improved alignment and shared accountability for innovation adoption performance. Todays report from the Innovation Ecosystem Programme (IEP) outlines ways the NHS can further develop and implement innovations in healthcare. There is an opportunity to embed the report’s recommendations into the forthcoming 10-year health plan, they include: Building skills, capabilities and culture and unlocking time the help the NHS workforce prepare for future ways of working. Developing commercial approaches to share value and adoption in testing innovation. Building robust evaluations to assess the impact of innovations. We welcome the report and look forward to continued collaboration with colleagues across the East of England

📢 Key Themes from the Health Tech Alliance (HTA) Response to the NHS 10-Year Health Plan Over the last couple of months, the Government has been welcoming organisations’ views on the new 10-Year Health Plan for the NHS. At the HTA, we welcomed Lord Darzi’s wide-ranging review of the NHS and took this opportunity to highlight the pivotal role that HealthTech could play in overcoming critical challenges such as the 7.8 million elective care backlog, declining patient outcomes, and the shift from treatment to prevention. 🚀 Top Priorities for the 10-Year Health Plan: Shifting Care to Communities with HealthTech: Embedding new technologies such as surgical robotics, AI-driven diagnostics and remote monitoring tools will help reduce bottlenecks, enable earlier interventions and faster discharges, improving both patient outcomes and reducing NHS costs. Accelerating Innovation Adoption: With an average timeframe of 17 years before new tech is implemented in mainstream use, we called for better pathways from approval through to adoption, to close this gap. Spotting Illnesses Earlier: Diagnostic inequalities and staff shortages are delaying patient care. Scaling advanced screening and technology adoption would allow the NHS to tackle these issues head-on. 💡 Policy Recommendations: Short-Term: Adjust capital budgets to enable rapid adoption of proven tech and streamline procurement rules. Medium-Term: Expand community-level HealthTech access and improve data-sharing standards by 2027. Long-Term: Establish a sustainable framework for HealthTech funding akin to medicine funding. HealthTech has huge potential to improve healthcare efficiency, prevention, and patient outcomes. HealthTech Predictions for 2025 The HealthTech sector is evolving rapidly. Here are my 5 predictions of what we will see more of in 2025- 1. The NHS will get hard(er!) to sell to A change in government has understandably led to significant shifts within the NHS. With the new 10-year health plan set to be introduced in Spring 2025 and the NHS workforce plan expected by Summer 2025, there will be substantial changes ahead. It is likely to become more challenging for tech companies to secure larger projects as NHS buyers remain uncertain about their spending plans over the next few years. However, companies that align their services with the three strategic objectives of transitioning from hospital to community care, moving from analogue to digital systems, and shifting from sickness care to a focus on prevention will be in a better position to succeed. 2. AI Will Go Beyond Diagnostics AI isn’t just for analysing scans or predicting patient outcomes anymore. By 2025, we’ll see AI embedded in everyday clinical workflows. Tools which support GP triaging, or DeepMind's health AI, which helps predict patient deterioration, will evolve to offer personalised treatment pathways and real-time clinical decision support. I expect greater uptake of predictive analytics in both the NHS and private healthcare​. 3. Telemedicine Will Become the Norm Following a surge during the pandemic, telemedicine is here to stay. I think that in 2025, we will see a broader adoption of telemedicine, expanding beyond primary care into specialties such as dermatology and mental health. This change will enhance access to services for individuals in rural areas or those with mobility issues, offering greater convenience for patients. It is essential, however, to ensure that patients who are not digitally savvy have access to necessary services. 4. Wearables and Remote Monitoring Will be Mainstream In line with the NHS's objective to transition from hospital care to community care, wearable and remote monitoring technologies will become commonplace. We can anticipate a rise in virtual wards, where patients receive care in their homes, with wearables and other technologies enabling remote monitoring and management, especially for chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. 5. Mental Health Tech Will Boom Mental health is receiving more attention than ever, partly due to social media. Research from AXA Health indicates that 52% of individuals aged 16-24 have self-diagnosed a mental health condition online, often due to difficulties in securing NHS appointments and long waiting times. AI-powered mental health tools like Wysa and ieso Digital Health are expected to see widespread adoption, offering scalable and affordable solutions. I expect both the NHS and the private sector are anticipated to invest heavily in tech solutions to meet the growing demand for mental health support.
