Most wanted to work, study, & one day see families again,... if they were still alive. In HK asylum seekers cannot work, so they would travel in Saturdays for fun classes where we read together, and share for practise.
HK Refugee Advice Centre does wonderful work to support HK people in need (many often only get 2 meals per day) with Christian Action service HK if you choose to donate & support their good work. -

The panel discussed challenges the new UK Modern Slavery Act and it's TISC (Transparency in Supply Chains) clause, and solutions in ensuring that labour practices in corporate supply chains are sound and do not involve exploitation or slavery. We discussed who the different stakeholders are and how they impact on this issue (investors, NGOs, Governments exporting and importing, consumers, etc). I particularly shared what has been working to date, for example consumer efforts led by trade unions and NGOs drove 100s of companies to join the Accord for Bangladesh Worker Safety after Rana Plaza, and the ILO Better Work program has shown some success in causing labour laws and enforcement improvements in e.g. Vietnam, as a great example of how brands, unions and all parties can collaborate sustainably.
We discussed the exploitation of women, who are often more vulnerable in labour situations around the world as the charity Sisters for Change presented their report - "Eliminating Violence Against Women at Work" regarding workers in south India garment supply chains. I discussed gender equity initiatives brands have tested such as BSR HERproject, partnerships with charities CARE, Phulki, Awaj (with Impactt), ILO supervisory skills trainings, etc,..and how we need less repetition and more scaling and strengthening of these women's empowerment efforts more aligned to basic rights to freedom of association and for collective bargaining toward living wage, and for decent conditions. -

I am on the Planning Committee so we review housing applications and advocate as we are able for more affordable rental housing which lower income people in Cornwall desperately need, and by speaking up that second homes get more fairly taxed so Cornwall Council can fund local housing help.
I do my best to support our local food bank and housing charity DISC, and a residents association, community gardening, ocean protection, and more.
In 2021 I led a Climate Motion pre COP in Glasgow, in which we advocated our Council speak up to support calls for a carbon tax, and with carbon border adjustment. -

Guidance doc on Brand Collaboration by factory for Supply Chain Social Responsibility Beyond Audit: What, Why, How.
CSRWinWin
Whilst some wonderful industry collaboration has increased in 2014 in apparel supply chains for better factory working conditions, such as the work of the Accord and Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, Made-By, BSR HERProject, and the ILO Better Work program success in Vietnam and Indonesia and expansion to Bangladesh and scoping for Myanmar, challenges remain for how to drive change in factories in China, or not covered by above apparel specific initiatives.

This article discusses how factory or supplier level brand collaboration (beyond SEDEX, FFC, etc limitations) can help CSR / Responsible Sourcing teams more economically assess factories better, support scaling of needed capacity building for improvement, and cause real change.
In particular, the misconception that such collaboration is not possible due to "anti-trust" concerns is discussed, with insights from factory level Brand Collaboration work over many years by Nike, Levis, PVH and others, and guidance such leaders (and FFC and SEDEX) have followed.
CSR, ESG and SRI practitioners considering how better supply chain risk management (and take up of productivity from worker engagement) opportunities can be achieved may find reading useful.
