Impactful insight doesn't always mean doing a fresh research project. Sometimes it's about communicating existing assets differently and re-activating them across a business. 🤔 For a long time, we didn't understand what our product actually was, or what our users really wanted... 🤔 Since launching Mob in 2016, we have been creating recipes, which our audience could access for free (here - www.mob.co.uk) Then, in 2022, we decided to launch a D2C digital subscription offering. 📲 As a first port of call, we all sat around and discussed the product. We had tonnes of ideas. Things that people had asked for over the years. We had 8 years of insight and feedback, which we began moulding into an MVP of the product. Throughout the course of the conversations, one sentence kept coming up; "We have to give them something more than just recipes." We thought to ourselves - "We have given them thousands of free recipes for years. We have to give them more to warrant a monthly payment." 💴 So, we built a customisable meal planner, allowing users to create their own meal plans. We created a monthly digital magazine called Pinch, to broaden our editorial offering. Users would be able to build collections of their favourite recipes. Once all of this was created, we launched Mob Premium in March of 2023. Post launch, we began surveying our paying subscriber base. We do a quarterly survey, where we ask a host of questions around what users are enjoying, what they would like to see more of, would they recommend to a friend etc. etc. We also started speaking to people. Colleagues. Friends. Family. 🗣 It was in these surveys, and these conversations, that something interesting started becoming very apparent. 📝 Whenever I spoke to people who had Mob Premium, they would, in the most part, say a variation of this one thing: "I love Mob Premium so much, it has the best recipes" The feedback forms were consistent with this also. When asked why they like Mob Premium, users would say: "It's like the Spotify of recipes" "The recipe selection is incredible" "It is the best thing for inspiration" "You have best chefs on the platform" Our users were happily using, and loving, Mob Premium, but it wasn't for the reasons that we thought they would love it. It wasn't the new snazzy features or the digital magazine. It was the recipes, and the chefs that created them. We always knew people loved Mob recipes. And our Mob chefs. What we didn't know is that people would be happy to pay for them. We didn't know that this was a product in and of itself. It was only through getting something live, and speaking to people, that we could build a much clearer picture of what our users really wanted. It was very, very different to what we first thought. Of course, the product will evolve. But we know the core of it now. Our users want the best, tried and tested recipes. Developed by the most trusted chefs. In a smooth, easy-to-access digital product. I wish I had learned this lesson earlier in my journey at Mob. Ship fast. Test. Learn. Iterate. This is key.

For this month's Problems Worth Solving podcast, I spoke to Rochelle Gold, Head of User Research and User-Centred Design at NHS England. She has been working quietly behind the scenes to build up a user centred focus across the NHS's digital work. We framed the discussion around how to make the digital side of the NHS more human. I loved this example that she shared when we were discussing the value of integrating research with technology investments: “One example I give is observing someone using a hospital system. They asked for a ‘print’ button on a screen, but by watching their behaviour, we realised the real issue wasn’t printing—it was integrating that information into another system. User research isn’t about what people say they need; it’s about understanding the outcomes they’re trying to achieve.” We also talked about how NHS England is tackling one of the biggest challenges in research—breaking down silos. They have over 130 user researchers now in their team and have developed an AI-powered tool to organise and surface insights across the organisation. “We want to allow anyone in the NHS to query what we already know about a topic. It’s transforming how we manage and share research knowledge.” We discussed the importance of collaboration between policy and service delivery and how transformative this was during the the pandemic, when teams from digital, policy, and operations came together under intense pressure. “The pandemic showed how collaboration could deliver faster, more effective solutions. I’ve been working with Carwow on their first Gen AI feature since late November last year. I’m pleased to now share the fruits of that labour, Ask Mat (https://lnkd.in/eSNwheEW). It has been a wonderful (and fun!) project. We kicked off by prototyping - in close collaboration with two of the founders (James Hind, David Santoro) and a few key engineering leaders at Carwow. When we got something that felt like it had legs, we then moved into a more traditional design, build, and learn process. Once we saw it performing well enough internally, we shifted our focus to commercial launch planning. At the same time, we worked on building monitoring systems and planning the handover and upskilling of the Carwow team. Unlike an agency, I’ve been able to work closely with their own tech team and stack, creating something that is fully integrated into their internal systems and ready for them to take over and build on - Carwow being a Rails shop definitely helped move fast here. As it’s all built within their internal systems, a key success measure of the project is that it can be an example internally for others at Carwow to use as they consider new LLM features. I’ve worked closely with people across the tech org to provide support and training to the team so that they can understand and extend Ask Mat - with a brand and content library as strong as Carwow’s, there’s a lot to explore. There’s a lot that goes into planning, building and launching consumer-facing LLM products. Shockingly, I have a few more thoughts on this; watch this space. Over the past 12 months, 15 million Brits have been scammed - and the impact is profound, 10% of those scammed have had to delay retirement. Partly, this is due to scammers having access to more sophisticated tech - 60% of us are concerned AI is going to make scams worse. However, no matter how sophisticated scammers get - they still mainly rely on time honoured techniques. Which means there are consistent red flags we can all look out for. Learn these basics, and you’re in a much better position to protect yourself. It’s for this reason we’ve launched RASA, the Royal Academy of Scamatic Arts. It’s a fictional institution with a very real message: stop scammers by learning their tricks. Enrol today - because scammers really wish you’d skip class.
