A large part of the UK’s infrastructure asset base is operating well beyond its anticipated lifecycle or is not able to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Regular maintenance - driven by innovation - has delivered much lauded cost and environmental savings. Yet, such an approach can only go so far; the challenges of climate change combined with reduced public spending have highlighted weaknesses which impact the UK public on a near daily basis. With an increasing level of potholes in our roads, regular delays to our rail travel due to asset failure, broadband services which do not meet modern day requirements, and the not unreasonable anticipation of reliable energy and water supply, the UK is at a pivotal point as governments seek to meet public need. Maintaining the status quo is not an option. UK policy making needs a radical approach to deliver the world class infrastructure we all need to live and work. This conference seeks to address the challenges faced by national and local governments and their delivery bodies and deliver the right solutions for our society. Civil Engineering Contractors Association (National)'s conference will put reliable service at the heart policy making and industry debate. New results announced: Our Business Events Growth Programme supports event organisers to secure international business events and increase delegate attendance at Events to Britain. During the financial years 2018-2023 it supported 62 events in 18 cities, resulting in a boost of £45.5 million to the UK economy. Every £1 invested in the programme supported £33 of revenue being generated for the British economy through new events secured, or in additional delegate spend. Looking specifically at the financial year 2022-2023, the programme supported a record 27 business events across 14 cities, almost double the number of events in cities supported in 2019-2020. These events aligned with priority sectors for the UK Government including healthcare and life sciences, technology and innovation, energy transition and environment, advanced manufacturing and education. Our CEO Patricia Yates said: “These results are testament to the importance of our Business Events Growth Programme, both to the industry and to the economy. It also demonstrates the expertise of our world-class business events sector and the quality of Britain’s offer to international delegates. The full quote is important as it considers not just #corporatetaxation, but the need for #infrastructure #investment: “Although the Autumn Statement will only account for the Government’s spending and investment plans for 2025/26, Suffolk Chamber believes it should be seen as the perfect opportunity to establish its credentials as an administration really determined to lay the foundations for long-term socially #sustainable #economic #growth. “This must mean speeding up its funding in whole or in part for transformational #transport projects that #Suffolk, the wider eastern region and key stakeholders nationally have come together to support with one voice. As shown by Suffolk Chamber’s recent #SuffolkConvention, when our county – the one that fuels, carries and feeds the nation - falls in behind an issue, Government absolutely must listen. "Most particularly, we want to see the upgrades at the Ely and Haughley #rail junctions, delayed for so long, approved and a funding timetable confirmed.
