From Opportunity to Unicorn: CityFibre’ s Strategic Response to the UK's Broadband Needs #businessmodelinnovation, #CitiFiber #innovationenabledunicorn Given the high infrastructure cost, complex installation challenges, regulatory hurdles, and focus on high customer density urban markets, big fiber players in the UK market i.e. Openreach, Virgin Media are hesitant to go into underserved, rural markets with their fiber broadband services. A perfect opportunity for innovation! Greg Mesch & other CityFibre promotors with extensive Telcom and infrastructure development background stepped in and grabbed the opportunity with both hands to build a unicorn out of the market needs. Beside identifying the gap in the market, altnet (Alternative Network to Openreach, Virgin Media) CityFibre, aligned itself with UK govt’s Project Gigabit (£5bn program aimed at taking high speed broadband to UK’s remote and underserved areas) and secured £1.2Bn investment between public and private (Goldman Sachs is invested in CityFibre) sources. With over 3.5 million premises passing and another 3+million ready for service connections CityFibre has not only established itself as the largest independent fiber network in the UK but also hit the coveted Unicorn status. With the recent acquisition of Lit Fibre (10Gbps XGS-PON platform), CityFibre has further consolidated its position and added 300,000 premises to its portfolio. Interestingly, by carving out a new B2B market segment of “Landlords” or “Property owners”, or “Property Managers” CityFibre has not only effectively done a “hyper-personalization” of sorts in the UK fiber market but also helped the cause of improving Customer Lifetime Value (CLV). Bulk service agreements, infra support for multiple tenants, providing landlords with tailored information and services, CityFibre is on path to achieve market differentiation vis-à-vis its competitors. CityFibre’ s partnership with Totsco (One Touch Switching company) has not only helped it streamline the process for customer’s switch between broadband providers into CityFibre, benefitted from improvements in Switch Match rate (% of successful switches in broadband service providers using TOTSCO) and in the process hugely positively impacted customer experience In summary, business model innovation on customer segment, core skills of telecom and infrastructure development, partnerships with Internet Services Providers (ISPs), community focused flexible and innovative solutions, partnership with Totsco for superior customer experience and becoming a part of UK Govt’s Gigabit project to secure funding are some of the key reasons CityFibre has thrived in the hyper-competitive UK fiber broadband market to become a Unicorn in no time.

Non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) based satellite services with its high throughput low latency wireless broadband services and expanding range of direct-to-device capabilities that can serve even the remotest locations (including maritime, airborne and even in orbit) is shaking up the sector and giving rise to crucial commercialisation and spectrum regulatory issues. Industry recognises the need to foster greater access to spectrum for satellite services whilst balancing against the needs of other existing valuable spectrum access rightsholders. Further convergence between satellite and mobile broadband service providers, network operators and device manufacturers is leading to calls for revisiting regulatory frameworks to ensure rules are fit for purpose. One thing that is for certain is that change through technology evolution will continue apace. What will further advancements in NGSO capabilities mean for fixed line access, transmission and mobile networks? With all these developments and milestones, 2024 is set to be significant in shaping regulation for years to come for satellite providers and stakeholders in this market. Watch this space. According to Ofcom’s 2023 Adults’ Media Use and Attitudes report, 1.9 million UK households have no internet access - up 1% from what was reported in 2022.     The current approach to solving this is focused on investments in fibre infrastructure, however, this isn’t always the best or most appropriate solution. mmWave FWA is a complementary technology that can deliver fibre-like internet connectivity in both rural and urban areas, meeting the growing demand for high-speed internet across the country.     In an article for The Fast Mode last year, our CEO Wim Van Thillo spoke about why mmWave FWA is a great technology to help the UK bridge it’s growing digital divide.
