Loved co-hosting an intimate roundtable lunch last week with HR & Wellbeing leaders from across the UK. The theme was all around delivering and measuring ROI on wellbeing initiatives. Alongside some interesting discussion there was also a lot of laughter! Thank you Fiorela Carmona for the great selfie and Pippa Andrews, Thiago Sequeira Rapp, Tim Goodchild, MCIPD and Pilou van Staalduinen for your energy and enthusiasm! Some key takeaways: -Exec engagement in today's environment is key. Give the compelling reason why and compare any investment you're asking for to the overall company budget to show how small it is for the impact it could have. -Data is more important than ever. The best partners are those who share it transparently and use as a tool for improvement or business insights. -Having solutions that are personalisable at scale are key. This trend of declining profits has extended from the end of 2023 into the first quarter of 2024, with trading conditions in Asia, the UK, and the US showing no signs of improvement. The company’s struggles reflect broader economic uncertainties impacting client and candidate confidence, leading to longer hiring times, especially in permanent recruitment. As an economist specializing in temporary labor markets, it's crucial to note the shift in recruitment dynamics highlighted by PageGroup. The decline in permanent recruitment gross profit by up to 18.6% and a lesser but significant drop in temporary recruitment profit signals a strategic pivot in the labor market. Businesses are increasingly favoring temporary staffing solutions amidst economic uncertainty, offering them the flexibility to adjust workforce sizes without bearing the heavy financial commitments tied to permanent hires. This trend is vital for staffing firms and professionals to monitor, as it suggests a potential growth area in the temporary staffing sector despite overall market contractions. A couple of great stats from my colleague Joseph Buckley. Recruitment companies turn over, on average, 60% of their clients per year. That means only 40% of clients have placements in consecutive years, and most relationships languish. Also did you know that jobs with clients you've already placed with fill at a 38% higher rate than jobs with new clients? Despite this, over a third of recruiter/client relationships never proceed past the first placement. The growth opportunities from managing your people strategy well has always been important however we are seeing this becoming more prominent within the C-suite agenda (Aon GRMS ‘23).
