Apparently, one in five business owners dread doing their taxes. I’m more surprised at the idea that the other four don’t dread it! As Head of Wealth Planning at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management (UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man), I find many business owners just don’t want to think about tax holistically. They simply deal with immediate tax issues as they occur, rather than pro-actively planning ahead. If you’re currently making arrangements to exit your business, you should know that there are various tax allowances, such as Business Asset Disposal Relief, which could help reduce the tax you’ll pay after the sale. Inheritance tax (IHT) liabilities feel as if they’re way off in the future and can be dealt with at a later date. But if the worst happened, your family could be stuck with a painfully large IHT bill, especially following the recent Budget which has capped IHT relief on business assets at £1m. I for one have signed. Triple lock for pensions should be matched with the same for personal tax allowances IMO. How do we pay for it you ask? My answer for a start would be to cut waste by reducing the size of our overbloated UK Civil Service and UK government - put simply spend our money more wisely! Successive The Conservative Party and The Labour Party (with a bit of Liberal Democrat’s thrown in) Governments have failed us. I work in #financialservices and am embarrassed at the failure of the system put in place supposedly to protect us. I’m not the only one - with a march taking place today as to the lack of openness and challenge, supported by the Transparency Task Force. A couple of days ago, Baroness Sharon Bowles was kind enough to take some time to discuss her Private Members' Bill (PMB), entitled: Listed Investment Companies (Classification etc) Bill [HL]. The Bill has its First Reading on Thursday 5th September in the House of Lords, following which there could be an interminable wait whilst the legislative process grinds on. https://lnkd.in/gp3HM4rh The Bill is 14th on the list of PMBs and the 13 preceding Bills must have their Second Readings, before this one. The timetable for debate is limited: one Friday a month is ordinarily allocated to debating PMBs, and there is time to debate roughly 3 PMBs per session. That means Baroness Bowles' PMB is unlikely to have its second reading before the New Year. I asked if there were any way in which this process could be accelerated, and the good news is that there is! The Government could adopt the Bill, or 'steal it' and create a Statutory Instrument to push it through rapidly. The Bill is thought to be very unusual in nature, hence the extensive cast of contributors below, so now that the heavy lifting of drafting the Bill has been done, adoption by HM Treasury would be an easy, quick win. I will leave it there and wish Baroness Bowles success with this vital piece of corrective legislation.
