I was invited to speak at the virtual EMARKETER summit regarding customer engagement and data management, including identity and privacy. The good news is, in IAB’s recent State of Data 2024 Report, the industry is now acknowledging the privacy-by-design ecosystem. It's about shifting from merely viewing audiences as numbers to recognizing them as individuals with distinct preferences and needs. In the report, we learned that brands, agencies, and publishers are making significant organizational changes to adapt to legislation and signal loss. Half to nearly eight-in-ten of the companies are training their staffs in data privacy, creating teams dedicated to business transformation, and tapping external expertise via new hires and consultancy partnerships. We want to engage customers with the most personalized advertising possible, and we need to learn to handle their privacy appropriately in the process. After a year of collective belt tightening across B2B tech, now is the time to double down on your investment in top of funnel brand awareness. New research from TrustRadius and Pavilion indicates that while 2023 had buyers focusing mainly on the potential ROI of their purchases ("prove it or lose it"), in 2024, buyers are leaning more heavily on trust, transparency and brand when making decisions. But there's a disconnect. Just as buyers are shifting their focus to trusted brands, brands themselves have failed to adapt, with many allocating less of their discretionary marketing spend toward top-of-funnel brand awareness initiatives (an average of 38%) and more to demand generation (an average of 53%). Training is absolutely important, however I'd frame is slightly different in this context of collaboration. Marketing leaders should ensure a culture of collaborative continuous learning where marketers will thrive while continuing to up-level skills (amidst the fumbles that inherently occur while learning) in our ever rapid evolving marketing profession, AI's impact being one element.
