As the appetite for impact investing grows among institutional asset owners, The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) sheds light on what defines an effective impact approach. A recent position paper from GIIN presents case studies of South Yorkshire Pension Fund, Dutch PGGM, Zurich Insurance, and MassMutual, showcasing a trio of strategies they share: 1️⃣ Defined Impact Priorities - Each investor has set clear priorities that align with their beneficiaries’ values, ensuring their investments address specific social or environmental needs. 2️⃣ Portfolio-Wide Opportunities - Identifying impact investments across asset classes enables a diversified yet focused approach. 3️⃣ Dual Focus on Returns & Outcomes - These institutional investors balance financial goals with meaningful, positive real-world outcomes aligned with their chosen impact priorities. GIIN’s Director of Institutional Engagement, Christian Rosenholm, emphasises the growing interest and potential influence institutional asset owners hold in impact investing. Currently, only 1% of global capital is dedicated to impact strategies; increasing this could significantly drive progress on global challenges. 👉 “If we can get to 5%, if we can get to 10%, we’ll have solved a lot of things,” Rosenholm notes. All the best examples of things that are built to last are when they have been built together,” says Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Department for Culture, Media and Sport in the foreword to the latest market sizing report from the Impact Investing Institute.   It is great to see charities​ and philanthropy referenced in the report.   As Lisa Nandy’s quote suggests, we cannot achieve the full potential for positive, sustainable change in our communities and the wider world without the effective deployment of capital across the full spectrum of capital.   Responsible business, ESG, impact investing, social investing and philanthropy all play different and important roles in driving positive change for people and planet. Our latest report on place-based impact investing, highlights the developments in the field over the past few years. Progress includes: 1️⃣ The supply of capital seeking place-based impact investment is increasing Over the past few years, there has been a marked increase in Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) investments in PBII sectors in the UK, catalysing innovative strategies for scale and diversity. Two thirds of LGPS plan to increase their allocation of local investments. 2️⃣ There is an increasing demand for impact capital Local and combined authorities are becoming increasingly proactive in seeking partnerships with private sector investors. Our ‘Place Pilots’ in Wakefield and Southampton contribute to this growing field by supporting local authorities to build the capabilities to engage more effectively with investors seeking aligned societal outcomes. The market is experiencing a growth in investment products targeting positive local outcomes, such as Schroders’s Real Estate Impact Fund, Octopus’ Affordable Housing Fund, and Gresham House’s Sustainable Infrastructure Fund, which recently secured £450 million investment from 8 LGPS funds. 3️⃣ The enabling infrastructure to support PBII is being built Blended finance mechanisms, such as the UK Infrastructure Bank’s loan guarantees, are demonstrating the catalytic potential of blended finance. And we're growing the place-based impact investing movement. The Institute’s Place Coalition and partnership on the PBII Network (hosted by The Good Economy), have become instrumental platforms for collaboration and knowledge exchange.
