With all due respect to The governing bodies of developed nations - regulations and laws are well intentioned, however without the proper control elements and functions they cannot maintain the insight, gain access to the metrics and telemetry needed to hold AI companies accountable. There are 4 core things needed to give AI regulations teeth - (1) agency over data with a denial of access core architecture to thwart data scraping and brokerage, (2) representation for data agents, subject of content/data so they have the ability to negotiate use of their content, (3) transaction management so data agents and owners can actively manage adherence to data terms and conditions, provenance and use by AI companies and hold them financially responsible for breach of contract, (4) sovereignty in digital space to ensure that individual rights can be upheld identically to their rights and privileges in the real world. There are many companies and organizations who are working towards these goals. We need support in order to stand up and provide solutions that allow for control.

The government's announcement on boosting AI is timely and an area where Embecosm has worked for many years. Best practice in AI is something TechWorks have been addressing for the electronics systems industry under the leadership of my colleague William Jones since early 2023. The overall approach William and his team have developed boils down to 5 questions. 1. Should I use AI? 2. Which sort of AI should I use? 3. How do I collect and prepare my data? 4. How do I train my AI? 5. How to I deploy my AI? Of course there is then a lot of detail in answering these questions fully. In my experience at Embecosm many companies forget questions 1 and 3. 🚀 Boosting AI Skills in UK Businesses 🚀 Evidence shows that a lack of AI skills is slowing down AI adoption, especially in smaller companies. One key reason? Low investment in AI upskilling. To tackle this, the Flexible AI Upskilling Fund pilot scheme has been launched to boost AI adoption and productivity by encouraging more employer-led investment in AI skills and training. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has announced a £7.4 million pilot scheme to subsidise AI skills training costs for SMEs in the Professional Business Services (PBS) sector, with £6.4 million available in grant funding. Eligible businesses can apply for funding to cover up to 50% of AI skills training costs. This includes training to help employees develop technical skills and understanding of AI, enabling them to develop, deploy, or use AI in their roles. This initiative is part of the £37.5 million Labour Market Evaluations and Pilots fund, announced by the Chancellor at Spring Budget 2023, aimed at improving labour market outcomes through innovative policies. Insightful article from James Shore. Indeed, the industry as a whole is suffering from Goodhart's Law. "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure" We have so much data. So much compute and storage capacity. So many ways to build formulas and call them "performance metrics". And predictably, smart individuals will just focus on moving the needle. Great to see new investment in a Scottish AI startup focused on deploying language processing systems to analyse customer conversations and automate processes for regulated professional services. Scotland is home to an array of startups and they play a crucial role in improving efficiencies within traditional industries. This is another useful proof point of the need for #AI re-skilling across all companies and organisations. Siobhan's list of her own re-skilling and educational activities is a tribute to her inquisitive mind and resilience. It's clear that there's some great material out there from the big tech players and leading universities. What is less clear is what you need to do - at a personal or organisational level - to re-skill and reposition yourself. There's simply so much out there.
