More flexible finance options needed for UK SMEs 👏 In a recent survey conducted by Novuna Business Cash Flow, it has been revealed that 28% of UK SMEs are being turned down for funding, highlighting the critical need for more accessible and flexible financing options. Shockingly, 34% of SMEs are at risk of permanent closure if they are unable to secure necessary funding. Despite this, 50% of SMEs have not sought any financial assistance since November 2023 😲 The reluctance to seek financing can be attributed to the challenging economic conditions and the fact that 28% of businesses surveyed have been rejected for funding. The latest report from Experian Market IQ on UK M&A activity reveals overall deal volumes were down 22% in Q1 2024 compared to Q1 last year, however, values were up by more than 150% driven by a return of mega-deals as macroeconomic conditions stabilised. #ThinCats maintained its position as the leading non-bank debt provider across the UK, just 4 deals behind HSBC. 🚀 How can the UK Government become a top user of FinTech? 🚀 In light of Labour's commitment to supporting innovation and growth in financial services we want to shine a spotlight back on a past blog, where we explore 'FinTech for Gov'—integrating FinTech solutions within government systems to boost service delivery. Toluwanimi Segun, Senior Associate at PUBLIC, says, "The new Labour government can best demonstrate its support for financial technology by putting some skin in the game — incentivising departments to purchase from innovative financial services providers (FSPs)." The UK is already a FinTech leader. Now, the government has a chance to lead by example. Tolu adds, "The fact that many of these providers joined the Crown Commercial Service Open Banking (Data, Digital Payments & Confirmation of Payee Services) highlights the government’s attractiveness as a customer. By creating forums for regular interaction between procurement teams and FSPs, they will more likely be able to introduce a soft policy mandate for FinTech procurement, and openly celebrate successful rollouts."
