Fair to say that a lot of people were left scratching their heads in response to the FCA's decision not to act to address the high cost of data following the release of its Wholesale Data Market Study in February. While many observers have complemented the FCA on the depth and detail of the study, the regulator’s decision not to take any action has left some market participants somewhat puzzled. Amongst the AI noise, this is a topic which is less discussed than it should be IMHO. A common trait of successful AI initiatives is understanding the human elements of its use. To me this encompasses trust, ethics and safety as opposed to just profit and efficiency. In 5 years time I would be willing to bet we will judge the businesses that broke trust more harshly than the businesses that made less profit. Forget the ‘Long and the Short of it’ for a second, what about the middle of it? You’ve had more than a decade to get your head around Les Binet and Peter Field’s best-known work, and its key themes thankfully seem to gather more weight and momentum every year. For the uninitiated, some of the ideas that have captured the imagination include:
 ⁃   Balancing long-term brand building activity and short-term performance marketing for optimal outcomes ⁃   Using emotion-building creative to drive larger business effects ⁃   Utilising a mix of high-attention media and using ESOV (plus the above) for maximum impact in market All essential for marketers to have in their arsenal, but not enough to drive action in isolation (most of the time). Plenty have rightly advocated for the main word in the title being ‘and’, meaning the need for both strands of activity, but could these be further enhanced by something in the middle of the funnel? Marketers love a funnel, and I particularly love the below version and its definitions (which I’ve pilfered from the brilliant Tom Roach of Jellyfish), which I think adds serious weight to the idea of needing something to reinforce messaging and offer means of convincing audiences of the need to engage with your brand once your big, broad-beam, interesting brand campaign has landed with audiences. 'Nudging' is a lovely name for this task. This 'nudging' section is crucial, but often gets overlooked in planning discussions due the binary nature of discourse around ‘TOFU vs BOFU’. Once you’ve successfully hit your audience in the heart or funny-bone, winning the logical argument that your brand/product/service is the correct one by building advocacy with key media and influencers is crucial. Even with changes in the media landscape, there’s still not better way to do so than to build advocacy by having credible third-parties deliver your message to your audience. 🚀 Brilliant to see our major banks demonstrating the power of strategic collaboration! From a marketing point of view, I'm genuinely impressed by NatWest, HSBC, Santander UK, Lloyds Banking Group and Barclays UK uniting to launch their banking hub in Sidmouth last year, so far there are 76 across the UK with a further 70+ planned over the coming years. This is corporate social responsibility and smart business strategy perfectly aligned. I can only imagine the red tape involved but by pooling resources, they're not just cutting costs - they're actually enhancing service delivery in smaller communities. It's a masterclass in turning industry challenges into opportunities while strengthening brand trust. 🤔 Maybe more industry competitors should look to collaborate for the benefit of UK and international customers. It's so easy to see our competitors as 'the enemy' 😈 however collaboration can open doors to new markets if we can only look past our noses.
