I am not posting this as shaming the US Secret Service, but rather as using a professional lapse to improve their organisation, and their mission, overall. As a result of attacks against American diplomatic facilities (some successful and some less successful) there has always been a review - usually including outside experts - to identify what happened and how, and then look for methods to improve and ensure those weaknesses could not be exploited again. It is easy to say there is a lack of funding, personnel, resources (which may actually contribute to whatever the weakness was in the first place) but often there are other policies and procedures which might be adopted (at little to no cost) to help prevent an attack in the future. After EVERY attack targeting our diplomatic facilities, compounds, motorcades, and personnel there has been some panel or review board that returned areas of weakness, and recommendations for improvements to Diplomatic Security. These recommendations tend to serve as the building blocks for new programs, training, or enhancements, and yes - sometimes - even funding. Geopolitical Update: On November 11, 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the death of Maj. (res.) Itamar Levin Fridman, 34, from Eilat, during a gunfight in the northern Gaza Strip. Fridman, a team commander in the elite LOTAR Eilat unit, was killed in an engagement with Hamas fighters. Three other IDF personnel were reported seriously wounded. This incident highlights the ongoing escalation in Gaza as Israel’s military operations persist. Sanborn Analytics, as previously noted in our communications, continues to assess that Israel’s military objectives in Gaza and southern Lebanon have become increasingly ineffective. This following question might generate some discussion ... ⤵ ❓ Should one be overly concerned about the fact that countless media reports and commentators fail to distinguish between mercenaries, ‘military contractors’ and private security providers in the news? ⚠ This question is not borne out of frustration, nor is it to be seen as a general criticism. ✅ Quite the reverse, it is being posed in the belief (maybe mistaken) that to simply lump every security provider, ‘military contractor’ and mercenary in the same pot without distinction serves only to blur issues. At best, it creates confusion in the public narrative. At worse, it can hamper efforts to address any human rights and humanitarian law risks associated with their respective activities. ⬇ And in thinking about the question, a couple of distinctions between mercenaries and private security providers to ponder over: 💵 Mercenaries are hired to fight. Private security providers are not – but if they are, they should no longer be considered private security providers. 🌍 Mercenaries generally operate only in conflict zones. Most traditional private security providers operate outside of armed conflicts - any private security provider operating in hostile environments needs to be aware of the red-lines and risks they run. 📄 Private security providers are hired by clients from all walks of life: businesses, NGOs, international organisations, private citizens, embassies, retail, airports, international sporting events, music concerts etc… 🔒 Mercenaries are more selective in their client choice…. 🤔 So next time you come across a piece in the news that is jumping synonymously between private security, ‘military contractor’ and mercenaries, ask yourself the above question. #riskmanagement #IHL #UNGPs #SDGs #media #responsiblesecurity #leadership #duediligence

Turkish arms exports increased by 106% between 2019-2023 compared to 2014-2018.   ·  GCC countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, are interested in Turkey's experience in developing their own domestic arms industries as they seek to develop their own domestic arms industries.   ·  Turkish arms manufacturers are well-positioned in GCC states due to their cost-effectiveness, willingness to transfer technology, and lack of political restrictions compared to Western suppliers.   ·  Western arms manufacturers are losing ground in the Middle East due to political considerations and human rights concerns, though there are signs this stance may be softening in response to growing Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
