🌟 Navigating Fundraising Challenges for Fintechs 🌟 Last week, with Rare Founders we hosted a room full of fintech founders... At Google's Startup Hub, we hosted a morning event with the aim of helping fintech founders understand the difficult fundraising roadmap. The event featured a panel with the amazing: 🎤 Kyle Masterson, Head of SHIFT Open Finance Community 🎤 Johnnie Martin, Investor at Augmentum Fintech 🎤 Stella Buhalis, Investor at Nauta 🎤 James Fell, Founder and CEO of Credit Canary 🎤Daniel Rose, Founder and CEO of Doshi The conversation was packed with actionable advice and stories from both sides of the fundraising table. A big challenge many of our members face is trying to get funding without proven traction due to regulations holding them back. Some key insights on this topic were to work as close to the edge of regulation as possible (either a supplier, or become an agent of someone else's license) so you can start to prove the need without being regulated. It is also important to ensure a strong story to tell investors that proves there will be success down the road. Monzo Bank is the latest tech unicorn to achieve profitable growth after years of depending on large amounts of outside funding to fuel its growth. The company has posted a very nice profit of £15m, with revenues growing 2.5x and deposits growing 88%. Of course, like many fintechs they were helped by the higher interest rates in the last couple of years. But Monzo can take credit for being at the right scale when the interest rates shifted (which they did mostly through building the best customer experience in UK banking) and for pivoting to profitable growth at the right time. I've been a Monzo customer since its alpha days and even invested a bit in one of its crowdfunding rounds, so it's safe to say I'm a diehard fan. Still, I have to say they have never been as innovative and productive as they have in the last couple of years, finally building some revenue-generating products popular with customers. We have just posted a blog about 'SDR fund labels – what are we hearing?' It is too long to reproduce in full here, so I am sharing the first few paragraphs. (The full text is freely available via https://lnkd.in/erxVuefP ) === The adoption of #sustainable fund labels is big news at the moment, particularly as we approach the 2 December ‘Naming and Marketing’ deadline, which require additional caution when fund managers make sustainability related comments and claims. (See full #SDR rules) Much is changing, but a key driver of current activity is that unlabelled funds will no longer be able to use the words ‘sustainable, sustainability or impact’ (or similar) in their names – although the FCA announced temporary ‘flexibility‘ in September (essentially a four month extension) for relevant funds that had submitted an application to them amending disclosures in line with ESG 5.3.2R by 1 October 2024. Evidence that we have gathered from fund mangers suggests however that we are now in a period of immense activity and change. We have sought to capture this via a range of ‘SDR labelling’ filter options on our (open and free to access) Fund EcoMarket database. Some of the current key numbers (to date) are as follows: - 103 fund managers have told us they are working towards adopting labels for named funds (we view this as a likely underestimate). - 176 funds have told us they are ‘not eligible’. (It is important for financial advisers and others to understand that many funds are not yet able to use the new labels, for example because they are offshore). - The managers of 13 funds have told us they are ‘intentionally unlabelled’ – in other words, their funds are probably ‘in scope’ – and may well be appropriate for those seeking funds that take sustainability seriously – but the manager has decided not to pursuing a label at present. (This may relate to approval process concerns.) - Fund EcoMarket shows 2 labelled funds (we expect this to increase soon). (The funds are searchable on our database here https://lnkd.in/eEn9q5pA) What else are we hearing? We understand that around 11 funds have achieved labels. 2 of these are labelled as such on our database. Some funds have asked us to hold back their labelling status until they ‘go live’ (eg aligned literature / ready to press ‘go’.) Many strong funds are in the labelling process (which starts, in many cases, with the need to amend the fund prospectus) but are struggling to gain labels because of what we view as (sometimes rather extreme) teething issues. ‘Broad based’ (comprehensive, complex) sustainable funds appear to be the most affected. The FCA has listened to feedback and sought to ease these with a recent notice giving disclosure examples, however we believe there is more to be done in this regard if we are to maximize the potential benefits of SDR.

Profitable Zopa Bank has a fraction of the customers of Monzo, Revolut and Starling — CEO Jaidev Janardana says that’s by design. Digital bank Zopa Bank to expand into current accounts, investments and SME lending, focusing on increasing average revenue per customer rather than total customer numbers, its profitable consumer-focused neobank status, and its strategy of offering competitive interest rates to incentivize customers. #Fintech funding news: Yonder Raises £23.4M and Eyes EU Expansion 🚀 🇬🇧 UK-based credit card fintech Yonder has closed a £23.4 million funding round, pushing its valuation to over £100 million, as it gears up for European expansion. The round was co-led by RTP Global and Repeat, with participation from Latitude. 💳 Yonder, founded in 2021, sets itself apart by focusing on rewards and experiences rather than traditional credit-building tools. With over 20,000 users in five UK cities, Yonder offers unique partnerships with local restaurants, merchants, and now, larger brands like Qatar Airlines. 📈 CEO Tim Chong sees this as the last funding round before reaching profitability: “We will be able to operate independently after this.” He adds that Yonder’s revenues have tripled in the past year, despite challenging market conditions. 🌍 Yonder is also ramping up its use of AI to enhance user experiences and guide customers on where to stay, eat, and go when traveling.
