As Black Friday arrives, many in the UK are feeling the pinch of economic uncertainty. With rising living costs and financial pressures, it’s more important than ever to offer ways your customers can shop smart. Hear from Andrew Phillips, Managing Director for V12 Retail Finance on his thoughts. “Black Friday 2024 arrives against a backdrop of continued economic uncertainty. Over the last couple of years, inflationary pressures, higher interest rates, and the rising cost of living have significantly impacted consumer confidence. In 2023, we saw a marked shift in consumer behaviour, with shoppers becoming more price-conscious, focusing on essentials and practical purchases rather than luxury or discretionary items. This year is expected to follow a similar pattern, with many households exercising caution amid wage stagnation and persistent economic strain. However, despite the pressure on household budgets, the allure of discounts has kept Black Friday as a key date on the retail calendar. Retailers have responded by offering more targeted promotions, extending sales periods, and focusing on value-based marketing to capture cautious spenders. While the overall volume of sales may not reach pre-pandemic levels, we anticipate strong participation, particularly in categories like electronics and home goods, where consumers seek to maximise value during this period of constrained spending. The next few weeks will offer further insight into whether retailers' strategies can counterbalance the impact of tightening financial conditions on consumer spending. The benefit of V12 Finance is that consumers can still make their purchase, spread the cost interest free over a fixed period while the money they would have paid up front can make strong returns in a high interest savings account.”
