Demand for Intermediate-level Software Developers is decreasing, resulting in salary levels on offer declining. For the time being it appears that the days of intermediate developers securing 15% - 20% pay increases when moving jobs are over.   Current advertised salaries for software developers in the UK (3 months to June 2024) are down to 2019 levels.   Is this trend mirrored elsewhere in the world? What are the causes for this?

🔥 Mobile Wrapped 2024 🎯 Not to seem like I am jumping on this 'Wrapped' trend but I thought it'd be a fun way to reflect back on the year we just had in 2024. I moved from working within the iOS niche to pivoting into Android, Cross-Platform (RN, Flutter, MAUI) and it has enabled me to see the Mobile market in more depth than ever before. Here are some interesting trends I have noticed within Tech: 🌟 FinTech still reigns above any other industry when it comes to investment and it is clear to see it is going to the best way out of this job market crisis. 🌟 Flutter roles have dropped off significantly with React Native taking back a major share of the market, especially within start-up environments. 🌟 Similar to cross-platform solutions, there has been a major shift into almost 'full-stack' within Mobile. Lots of developers are now expected to have experience in backend technologies when aiming for start-ups. 🌟 Android development remains a major pain point when it comes to recruitment for companies - this market is so different to iOS currently. 🌟 There is a significant lack of EM+ leadership roles, as well as, junior positions. This is currently squeezing the developers into one type of a role and, thus, forcing the market to be more competitive. Within that, what sort of problems am I seeing ahead of next year?: ⚠️ AI ATS systems are not a sustainable way to hire in the long term. ⚠️ Processes are becoming longer and longer so companies who have 2-3 stage processes with a quick turnaround are currently beating competition. ⚠️ Just because the candidate market is saturated, it does not mean candidates won't care about feeling valued and having a good interview experience - HOW YOU TREAT CANDIDATES MATTER! ⚠️ Taking advantage of candidates needing work more urgently and offering lower salaries will backfire - candidates know their worth. ⚠️ Give some feedback for once - it does not take as long as it seems. A few weeks ago I spoke with a CTO that had been looking for an Embedded Software Engineer for 4 months. 🧐 They had tried to advertise the position on multiple channels -> 100+ applications -> 3 interviews -> 0 hires. 😶 They had tried to work with three recruitment agencies -> 13 CVs received -> 3 interviews -> 0 hires. 😑 Yesterday afternoon the only candidate I submitted, was hired. 😶‍🌫️ What was the difference? A 30 minutes long scheduled and prepared discovery meeting vs "I don't have time for a call" given to the other agencies. ✅ After the meeting, I understood the company, their mission, their culture and what type of candidate would fit perfectly in their team. 😊 This allowed me to present the company as if it was my own, while the other agencies only knew what keywords to put into LinkedIn recruiter. 😎 If you "spray and pray" your vacancy to recruiters, they will "spray and pray" it to the market and will then "spray and pray" you with irrelevant or mediocre CVs. 😑 Minimising communication will not save you any time. ✅ Instead, choose a niche recruiter specialised in what you're hiring for -> set up a discovery call -> and be positively surprised. A bit of CV advice for today!! I watched a video of recruiters saying don't highlight your hobbies and interests a few weeks back. Well, in my opinion, that's rubbish. Hundreds of developers are applying for roles, and if you have similar experience to another developer applying, then your personality will be the difference in you getting offered the role. You know what's really cool to do as an employer... ... Pay people what they're worth (irrelevant of market conditions) 💡 I'm seeing a worrying trend at the moment - Companies looking for Software Developers with 6+ years experience, but not willing to pay more than £35k 😕 Look... I understand budget restraints... And as the owner of a start-up, I get that companies pockets are only so deep! But if your pockets are only deep enough to get someone with 2-3 years' experience... Stop looking for people with 6 years+ in the hopes that they'll bite your hand off because the hiring landscape isn't all that great at the moment! If you play the game like this, yeah, you MIGHT get a quick win now, but in 12 months time, when the market shifts (as it always does) your competitors will be queuing up to pay them what they're actually worth... And you'll be left back at square one!!

The point of your CV is to move you to the next stage of the interview process. And the best way to do this is to have a CV that is RELEVANT If you’re looking to break into tech sales then make your sales achievements clear and visible. Use metrics to prove it. Talk about your successes and the impact you had. It’s much more useful than the A you got in Chemistry. Or a group project you took the lead on at uni. #jobsearch #CVadvice #salescareer

Last week, I put out a poll asking, “What’s your ideal company size for a QA/Reg role?” It’s clear that the size of the company can make a big difference in shaping how we work and grow in QA/RA. Whether it’s the fast-moving, hands-on vibe of a startup or the stability and resources of a big company, everyone has their own preference. The poll results gave us some great insights: 8% of people loved the hustle and hands-on energy of startups. A solid 51% are all about medium-sized companies - sweet spot between agility and structure. 25% prefer the security and vast resources of large more established organisations - more stability, more defined roles, and often, more opportunities for career development. 15% said, "Company size? Doesn’t matter as long as the role and culture are the right fit." What really stands out to me is how many of you feel that medium-sized companies strike the perfect balance. They seem to offer the best of both worlds: the chance to grow and be innovative while still offering more stability than a startup. It’s clear that each company size brings its own perks based on what you’re after in your career—be it growth, stability, or flexibility.
