If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

As one of the world's largest asset management firms, BlackRock advances ESG through various strategies and initiatives. The circular economy, which minimizes waste and maximizes resource use, aligns closely with BlackRock's ESG efforts, as they support initiatives like Climate Action 100+ to drive sustainable practices. When governments prioritize these initiatives, ESG principles often turn into regulations. The newly elected UK government is vocal in its support, suggesting that all companies, big and small, must be prepared to engage with the circular economy in the near future. Great to catch up with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) team last week (Cathrine Armour & Barbara Sanderson) at both the 👉 #RBEU 👉 Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) CSO forum. We discussed the various methodologies used in Earth Blox to solve #TNFD Data Deluge. There is no 'lack of data'. The opposite is true. Companies are facing a mountain of data types when it comes to reporting under the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). With a plethora of datasets available, selecting the right ones for the right use cases can be overwhelming. There are methods which involve using multiple data sources that complement each other, painting a more comprehensive picture of a company's nature-related risks and opportunities. By leveraging various datasets, companies can strengthen their TNFD disclosures in a few ways: 👉 Reduced Bias: Dependence on a single dataset can lead to skewed results. Convergence reduces bias and fosters a more holistic view. 👉 Increased Credibility: Combining data sources strengthens the credibility of your reporting. 👉 Improved Actionability: Different datasets can reveal hidden patterns and insights, leading to more targeted actions. Remember, the TNFD framework is still evolving. A convergence approach allows companies to adapt to future requirements while ensuring robust reporting from the get-go. The Simpler Recycling initiative moved forward in 2024 with the new government adding some much needed reassurance in the Autumn. The policy update in November set out this government’s plans to introduce Simpler Recycling in England ("subject to spending review outcomes"). The #SimplerRecycling policy still aims to make recycling easier for people in England, by making collections consistent for all households, businesses and relevant non-domestic premises (such as schools and hospitals). Simpler Recycling ensures more consistent, more streamlined collections but can make waste management a challenge for some local authorities. Many have not provided a collection service for food waste previously. The new default requirement for most households and workplaces will be 4 containers for: * residual (non-recyclable) waste * food waste (mixed with garden waste if appropriate) * paper and card * all other dry recyclable materials (plastic, metal and glass) These may be various container types, including bags, bins or stackable boxes. This is the government’s maximum default requirement and is not expected to increase in the future. However - and this is the important bit - "councils and other waste collectors will still have the flexibility to make the best choices to suit local need". A number of ISL clients have called upon our route optimisation software & services to help them prepare for Simpler Recycling and the introduction of #foodwaste collections. The added demands while driving new routes and on the kerbside have led many local authorities to invest in new technology, especially in-vehicle. 2025 will be an extremely busy and challenging year for #municipal services, especially those related to #wastemanagement, as the Simpler Recycling policy kicks-in. Check out this excellent video where Piers Forster and team explain the latest Climate Change Committee progress report findings just released - spoiler alert it is not all positive! The 10 priority actions for the remainder of this year needed to make up lost ground: ▶ Make electricity cheaper. Removing policy costs from electricity prices will support industrial electrification and ensure the lower running costs of heat pumps compared to fossil-fuel boilers are reflected in household bills. ▶ Reverse recent policy rollbacks. Remove the exemption of 20% of households from the 2035 fossil-fuel boiler installation phase-out, address the gap left by removing obligations on landlords to improve the energy efficiency of rented homes and reinstate the 2030 phase-out of new fossil-fuel car and van sales. The damage of these rollbacks can be limited by quickly reinstating these policies. ▶ Remove planning barriers for heat pumps, electric vehicle charge points and onshore wind. ▶ Introduce a comprehensive programme for decarbonisation of public sector buildings. ▶ Effectively design and implement the upcoming renewable energy CfD auctions. Ensure funding and auction design for the Sixth and Seventh Allocation Rounds are appropriate to deliver at least 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030. ▶ Accelerate electrification of industrial heat. Strengthen the UK Emissions Trading Scheme to ensure that its price is sufficient to incentivise decarbonisation and that support is available for a rapid transition to electric heat across much of industry. ▶ Ramp up tree planting and peatland restoration. Tree planting must be scaled up in the 2020s for abatement to be sufficient for later carbon budgets and Net Zero. There must be no more delays to addressing the barriers to delivery. ▶ Finalise business models for large-scale deployment of engineered removals. Finalise and open to the market the business models for engineered removals. ▶ Publish a strategy to support skills. Support workers in sectors which need to grow or transition and in communities that may be adversely impacted. ▶ Strengthen NAP3 with a vision that sets clear objectives and targets and reorganise government adaptation policy. 🌎Nine in 10 UK businesses want greater government support for decarbonisation🌎 We have been talking about the need to fill the knowledge and finance gap to drive credible impactful sustainability for years and have created, piloted and delivered both board and entry level engagement training sessions that have significant impact in changing how organisations are able to mobilise change. The good news: The survey found that “83% of firms are committed to achieving the UK’s legally binding net-zero emissions target.” So we have past the tipping point of adoption… what we now need is to shift that to credible action led by competent voices with a holistic view on corporate sustainability (as mandatory reporting will soon overshadow just netzero demands” I have personally held multiple roundtables on the tension between short term profit and long term strategy…with hundreds of senior leaders in the public and private sector (I will be chairing another roundtable on this at Reset Connect). What I can say hand on heart is there are brilliant - committed and competent leaders out there that we need to support to drive change. There are also boards out there that think they are “doing enough” if they are close to compliance…. That will put firms in a vulnerable position from supply chain and increasing cost perspectives. Hopefully the demands of the survey will be met: “96% of businesses surveyed are urging the next government to provide more support, including financial incentives, to assist with the net-zero transition”. Political parties are not transparent about the emissions they plan to cut. We have general elections tomorrow in the UK. If we are serious about climate change and biodiversity loss, we should vote for the party that has more chances to make the transition faster. The problem is that when it comes to climate change, most parties are not transparent about the emissions they plan to avoid or reduce. Many parties have well-intended intentions and manifestos. Many of them advocate for: - More public transport - Better food systems - More clean energy All of that is great. But let's not forget the scale of the problem. We emit about 400 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in the UK alone each year (without taking into account the emissions of imports). So how are those fancy manifestos going to get us to net zero by 2050? The reality is, parties are not measuring how much carbon they are planning to cut. We need concrete steps with measured emissions avoided, that take into account the long-term emissions of policies. Luckily, we have VoteClimateUK to help us. They have measured the cumulative emissions avoided for each of the parties according to their manifestos. Obviously, they have made some assumptions and simplifications based on the available data. But at least it's a starting point. So these are the total cumulative emissions avoided per party by 2050 in million tonnes of CO2 equivalent: - Green Party: 3,819 - Liberal Democrat: 1,063 - Labout: 654 - SNP: 204 - Conservative: 18 - Plaid Cymry: 0.8 - Reform/Brexit: <0 Now that helps put into perspective their climate change policies. As we can see, some of them will help us make the transition faster than others. Obviously, climate change is just one of the many things that one may consider when deciding which party to vote for. But at least now we can compare them more objectively. The real problem, however, is that, with current policies and assuming everything else stays the same, not even the Green party will take us close to net zero in the UK. If the total reduction in emissions from now until 2050 is 3,819 million tonnes of CO2e, that means an average of around 150 million tonnes of CO2e each year. Right now we are emitting 400 million tonnes, so we would not even achieve a 50% of the reduction needed. Voting for the Green party may be one of the most impactful things we can do. But we still need to push for more ambitious actions and policies. Regardless of who wins the elections, we need to keep putting pressure on the system in between elections and holding politicians and corporates accountable. Check out VoteClimateUK to learn more. International Carbon Mitigation has a clear path forward... I've literally been waiting on this for 6 years!!! The Kyoto Protocol CDM based private sector carbon offset instrument (version 1 of carbon credits), which was riddled with fraud and undermined the Kyoto Protocol, is finally being replaced with Paris Agreement Article 6.2-6.3 and the construct of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs): https://lnkd.in/eX2R7qvE). I'm elated to see the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) driving the effort by building an ITMO Trading Platform since 2021 Glasgow's finalization of the Paris Agreement to deliver the first ITMO auction in April, and again in July, of this year. Both were a huge success, and signal a path forward to create an ITMO market that resides somewhere between $200B (IETA estimate) and $4T (Shell Oil Research estimate) annually by 2030 for government sanctioned international trading of carbon mitigation per Paris Agreement Article 6 guidelines.  First ever ITMO contract signing, representing the first ever sovereign carbon mitigation trading: https://lnkd.in/euDFeXG3 More details from the UNDP effort to drive ITMO project development and instrumentation forward: https://lnkd.in/edx9gF2K There are currently 137 pilot ITMO trading projects. For example, Switzerland and Singapore are procuring ITMOs from countries such as Ghana, Peru and Thailand. These projects range from climate-smart agriculture to electric-car manufacturing. Ghana has the highest number of such collaborations underway, while Suriname is currently issuing ITMO credits through forestry projects: https://lnkd.in/eB5nbhz3 What does this mean for Parisii? We will continue to evaluate ITMOs as the UNDP market matures, but we believe ITMOs will be able to augment the PARYS stablecoin reserve to deliver potentially a 10X treasury instrument over the next 6 years if current estimates hold. The EU Allowances are expected to provide a 50% per annum return through 2030 for PARYS, but the ITMOs are projected to deliver 170% return annually through 2030. Balancing investment into both carbon assets can deliver over 25x return annually through 2030 over Tether's current treasury yield (delivering 3.5-4% per annum as US Treasury note yield), which would make PARYS a far more profitable instrument for all involved, all while serving the greater good of cleaning up pollution globally under Paris Agreement and MiCA regulatory guidelines. All this and having the PARYS treasury managed by Blackrock sounds like a huge improvement on stablecoin design over USDT. What say you?
