How does coaching outdoors disrupt our normative view of what emotional and structural containment look like? This is my central question of the talk I will be giving this Friday at the University of Chichester Coaching Psychology Conference. I've been coaching clients in natural settings since 2008, and I've not had a single client feel unsafe, quite the opposite: more contained, grounded, calm, embodied, alive. How we create psychological safety in natural settings is crucial and paramount to a successful coaching process. And at the same time, it's about trusting emergence, relaxation, balanced effort, letting go of control. Mindset Practice is called Mindset Practice for a reason because although our #growthmindset tools, #psychometrics and #programmes focus on embedding learning, it is putting that learning into practice after a workshop that really means change is transformational! It matters. Who we are becoming as leaders matters... Our business reflects our integrity. A recent Guardian article highlighted the lack of regulation in psychotherapy. As an Executive Coach and Clinical Hypnotherapist —also unregulated industries— I ensure a robust safeguarding process. My intake tracks for signs of psychosis, depression, suicidal ideation, medications, and includes confidentiality protocols. Additionally, I have access to therapist supervision, peer support and a trauma specialist for difficult cases, similar to licensed psychologists. Integrity is one of my core values. I believe we and our businesses are only as strong as our values and the personal development we continue to do. My hesitation in pursuing a formal psychology degree now stems from personal experience. Early in my recovery, I received damaging advice from licensed professionals who misunderstood the impacts of emotional and narcissistic abuse.... One of whom - at a time I needed compassion the most - was controlling, shaming and judgemental. Unfortunately, narcissistic abuse remains widely misunderstood by many therapists. The best leaders in the narcissistic abuse space - Dr Jerry Wise, Dr. Ramani and Caroline Strawson resonate because they speak not from academic knowledge but direct personal experience of being a survivor. My healing journey led me to combine: ✨ancient wisdom meditation practices ✨somatic coaching ✨breathwork and nervous system regulation exercises ✨trauma-informed hypnotherapy ✨creating a safe, compassionate container where clients feel they can be completely authentic and vulnerable. ✨ the importance of a sacred witness in the change process. Clients say that working with me is like 10 years of therapy condensed into weeks! While I always support industries having better regulation, I learned the hard way that having the right paper doesn’t always mean someone is the right person to guide your healing... What is a coaching psychologist ? The BPS published an impact statement back in May of this year to help create clarity around who we are and what we do. ❓ (I've attached a link to the statement on the The British Psychological Society website below) In short the British Psychological Society defines coaching psychologists as: Coaching psychologists are highly qualified psychologists who bring their specialised understanding and knowledge to inform coaching practice. 💡 OK - what do we do then ? To summarise, as coaching psychologists we : 1) - Focus on optimal functioning - helping to realise potential and improve performance 🏆 2) - Are a lever for prevention - we can help improve things before they get to the stage of needing clinical intervention. 🧠 For my own part I've been studying and applying psychology in various settings for over 30 years. Even now as I turn 50, my appetite for continued learning and enhancing my skill and knowledge base continues unabated as I've commenced another Postgraduate course of study with Oxford University. 👨‍🎓 So, if you are an individual, team or organisation who are seeking to optimise performance, or engage in preventative steps around stress management of other psychological factors look no further than a well qualified coaching psychologist. It’s been two weeks since the 4th edition of the Manchester Mindfulness Festival. And what was supposed to be a period of downtime (to recharge) has turned into very busy days replying to countless kind messages and further inquiries (equally recharging). Now, it would be tempting to publish a list of all that feedback, but we won’t. That’s never the aim of the festival. What we will do, however, is offer to share what we have learned from organising four consecutive (!) editions. How to plan, how to curate, the risks, blindspots, lessons learned,… the lot. The things I wish someone would have told me four years ago! Now, I am not saying you need to go out there and take risks by organising a big Mindfulness event. What I am saying is that you can always knock on our door. Mindfulness was always meant for sharing. Meanwhile, we keep learning, adjusting, adding, broadening, and welcome your support, too. The quality of the relationship matters. I was reminded of this when talking with a group of leaders last week, about how "the right quality of relationship can help clients do good work with bad questions; whilst the wrong quality of relationship stops clients doing good thinking, even with good questions." Although #coaching is very importantly not #therapy, findings from research into outcomes in psychology are also relevant to the coaching relationships in which we provide thinking partnership for learning, development and growth. Key #relationshipfactors that one 2019 paper identified, were: ·agreeing goals ·getting client feedback throughout the course of the work ·and repairing ruptures I would add - #empathy / attunement - #acceptance / 'unconditional positive regard' - and 'hope', or an unwavering #belief in the client's creativity, resourcefulness and potential. What qualities have you found most important for creating the conditions for you to think, learn and grow?
