I have a hidden part of my GB Renewables Map which lets you explore wind curtailment and (usually gas) turn-up, including energy volume and costs – either in aggregate or by individual balancing unit. Yesterday I updated the curtailment explorer with data for 2024, which refreshes daily so it will continue to show the current situation. Explore for yourself here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eYTRUfcC Data is taken from Elexon Insights, using the accepted bid/offer stacks to calculate the volumes and costs involved. It should be noted that the turn-up calculations use a detailed, methodical approach but are still a bit "finger in the air." As such they don't quite align with other analysis that can be found online, some showing much higher values, others showing much lower. I should also point out that this is a personal hobby project that I work on in my free time so please treat it as such – TL;DR; I'm no energy systems expert 😅

You probably didn't notice but October 1st was the launch date of the newest public institution in the UK – the 'National Energy System Operator' (NESO). The NESO replaces National Grid and is mandated with the simple task of ... "delivering electricity decarbonisation and whole energy system planning to deliver Net-Zero." This is a great initiative that has been many years in the making with cross party support. We need whole of system thinking and the NESO will have strategic oversight of both the electricity and gas systems. The first task is to take our electricity grid to net zero by 2030 which NESO say can be achieved. #EarthDay is a good opportunity to revisit our work with National Grid ESO to use explainable AI to improve the efficiency of GB electricity reserve setting. The solution could potentially save a significant amount of reserve each 30-minute settlement period, equating to millions of pounds a week, whilst making the grid operation more efficient and eco-friendly. Ocean Winds has submitted onshore planning applications for the 2GW Caledonia Offshore Wind Farm in Scotland. The proposed onshore infrastructure includes a substation and cable route in East Lothian, aiming to connect the offshore turbines to the national grid. This step is crucial for the project's progression and underscores Ocean Winds commitment to expanding renewable energy in the UK. Scotland is already a leader in renewable energy, and projects like Caledonia demonstrate a continued focus on advancing the energy transition. So how much energy storage would we need to run the GB Electricity Transmission System at net-zero emissions? I started with a true GB electricity demand, then subtracted: - total wind generation (embedded & metered) - total solar generation - net interconnector imports - non-fossil generation availability (Nuclear, Biomass, NPSHYD) And I ended up with the charts below, in which on a good week you still need 15GW of generation to fill the gap; on a bad one it is close to 30GW. I'm being quite generous with my assumptions too in that: - all energy imported from Europe is zero-emissions - Nuclear, Biomass and NPSHYD can run at 100% availability In any case, that's a lot of batteries.

I recently sat down with Cherry Swayne from Above & Beyond - Climate Tech Recruitment and talked about my journey into the utility industry, and we covered a wide range of topics from how UK Power Networks chooses partners to work with, to my thoughts on hardware vs software solutions and more. If you are a solution provider, I believe now is an incredible opportunity to tap into the utility industry as the network is at a turning point as it faces aging assets and cost constraints. I believe cross industry collaboration and sharing lessons learned will inevitably generate some innovation ideas that hopefully turn into BAU solutions. Fascinating read in today's Financial Times: Exploring new build Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) projects being considered in Scotland. PSH seems like a no-brainer - it's an elegant solution to the intermittency of renewables and grid constraints that leverages topography and proven technology. UK wind curtailment costs* are already significant and set to increase dramatically. PSH could help integrate more renewable power, and critically, lower the electricity costs for consumers*. The International Hydropower Association (IHA) noted the UK's potential to lead in clean energy storage back in 2021*. However, progress has been slow, perhaps due to the lack of a "cap and floor" mechanism. Massive CapEx is needed for PSH, and a "cap and floor" price stabilisation mechanism is crucial for investor confidence. With the UK Government currently deliberating on the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) policy framework*, let's hope for a swift announcement. I'm focusing on PSH here, but it’s important to note that a portfolio approach to LDES is necessary for the UK - no single LDES technology can be viewed as a silver bullet. *Links in comments.
