Therefore we decided to jump into biodiversity topics and start with the foundational layer: proprietary data. As biodiversity is incredible complex, the first steps to take action are about understanding nature by collecting data to an extend never seen before and a proper analysis of this data. This will help to take action, avoiding negative measures in the supply chains for agriculture related companies and to funnel investments in restoration and nature positive measures. Think about food companies, fashion companies, cosmetics companies and many more. They are strongly depended on mother nature's output. More than half of the global GDP depends on nature. $44 trillion economic value. Those companies have a strong motivation to invest in a good relationship and health of their by far most important supplier and they already start to invest. Hula is here to accelerate that. Combined with political actions like the European Nature Restoration Law to restore 20% of degraded land & sea by 2030 and similar laws in UK and other countries we currently create a chance for nature and biodiversity to recover partly. But we probably don't have many chances to do it right, as time and money are limiting factors, therefore a good understanding of what we do and how we funnel money will be crucial to succeed. Hula Earth found a fantastic mix between accuracy with their BioT-Sensors and scalability with satellite data. Perhaps the world is waking up and realising that no carbon credit is as important and valuable for our planet as a REDD+ credit. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has approved three REDD+ methodologies, as high-integrity Now all we need is for bodies like Verra to stop overreacting to negative press (you cannot appease anti-market fundamentalists, or academics funded by oil countries), stop overreaching (stick to the science, no need for arbitrary virtue-signaling changes), and start realising that project developers are their customers, and that customer service (including timeliness) is extremely important. Demand is going to take off in the next years, as thousands of large firms approach the 2030 deadline for their NetZero pledges. (High quality) REDD+ will be key.

📢 ICVCM confirms Verra and ART meet its high-integrity benchmark Only yesterday we posted our guide to key carbon action standards, and 'greater integration of the standards' was one of the key trends we flagged to watch out for. Each step like this is key in moving quickly to an integrated and coherent framework. Integration will allow buyers of credits to have confidence they are utilizing credits of the right quality that will serve their climate action objectives and will stand-up to scrutiny. The more we can simplify and clarify the regulation and standards around this industry, the better. There are many examples across other industries where corporates can take positive action and be confident that they are following clear and integrated rules. Proud to be one of the first believers with Climate Founders in kolum.earth! Carbon pricing like the European Trading System (EU-ETS) and supply chain pressure are in my opinion the two most powerful approaches for decarbonization. Cross boarder adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs) are the link to combine those approaches. The limitations of the EU-ETS are the regional limitation, that just a few industries are involved and the prices are not high enough yet. CBAM solves the first limitation in my opinion entirely, as it includes all suppliers from Non-European countries into the system. This is a huge step und creates pressure in the supply chain. Last year I was looking for a startup working in this field, as I believe it sits in a very important position in the supply chains of carbon heavy industries and can enable many other impactful solutions. Very glad that Helge Wieggrefe and Marius Sprenger decided to join our Climate Founders program and start Kolum. With their speed and know-how they instantly convinced me to be the best team in this space. Let‘s rock this together! So pleased to hear that Wildfarmed, the regenerative food and farming challenger brand, has landed its first retail launch. Regenerative agriculture is the way forward to decarbonise the food system and make farming resilient to climate shocks, so we are a big champion of Wildfarmed as they provide solutions for the UK shopper to make a change for good. Five of their bread SKUs have already arrived in Waitrose & Partners stores, and baguettes & flour products are to come in the summer. What makes their bread different? They’re made from wheat grown to regenerative agriculture standards and sourced from farmers in the UK and France. All the products are free from  ❌ Palm oil  ❌ Fat ❌ Artificial preservatives ❌ Emulsifiers The brand has supplied their flour to over 500 brands including restaurant brands Ask Italian and Wahaca, but this is their first time creating products for grocery. They’ve landed in an aisle that is in much need of a shake up. Bread is a staple of UK economy, however volume in the last 12 weeks across the total market is declining by 2% YoY, demonstrating a category needing innovation and a fresh approach. However Flour is the growth area that Wildfarmed are taking advantage of, homebaking continuing to rise in popularity, growth of 7% in volume and 18% in value identifies as an opportunity. Huge congrats to Edd Lees and George Lamb on the launch – and for providing a new solution for the growing consumer base who care deeply about what their products are made from. And they aren’t the only ones growing in this category, there’s Signature Flatbreads, Wenzel's the Bakers Ltd., Crust & Crumb and The Village Bakery Group all making big moves. A broad spectrum of technologies are required from wind, solar and storage to hydrogen, SAF and nuclear. Critical to success is all of them is a focus on innovation, skills, and learning so we can bring down costs and minimise the impact on everyday life. Investments in technologies that can reduce the cost of decarbonisation are crucial. Take aviation, for instance: long-haul flights remain critical for connecting people globally, and are also a significant source of emissions. But instead of restricting flights, we should focus on innovations within Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), such as new Power-to-Liquid (PtL) pathways like we are developing in OXCCU TECH LTD. These fuels can directly replace traditional jet fuels in existing aircraft. As these fuels scale, costs will decrease and aviation can decarbonise without compromising accessibility. This model extends beyond aviation to industries like shipping, heavy industry, and agriculture. With continued support toward innovation and pragmatic climate policy, sectors can balance emissions reductions with affordability. In this way, the government can “tread lightly” on people’s lives while advancing toward net zero. This approach offers a pathway to a secure and sustainable future, where technological progress addresses the emissions challenge without compromising the freedoms and opportunities central to modern life. #COP29 #NetZero #Aviation #ClimateTech

Enjoyable listen / watch this 20VC podcast where Harry Stebbings gets Cem Sertoglu of Bek Ventures to open up. Cem led, very likely the single best European seed deal thus far - the UiPath investment, $16.5m invested becoming $2.1b. Whoa! Notes on what stood out for me: *Play the game on the field. Cem: “I think our job is to play the game. Our business structure is defined by timelines. We raise 10-year life funds, so our job is to expose our fund to the strongest opportunities in every vintage, not to try to time the market.” *Cem: “the early rounds are not real rounds. They are contracts where you’re demonstrating alignment around a target that is very far out ahead. Every early stage check, you’re buying a very out of the money call option on these businesses.” Interesting point about how, unlike PE, Venture outcomes are correlated more to global outcomes than the local macro environment.Cem: “My outcomes are American outcomes, LSE outcomes, acquisitions by global tech companies. They’re not outcomes that are subject to the turbulence of whatever country that founder team may be coming from.” *Cem: “Our reserves are for those companies that will be misunderstood by the market or overlooked by the market because they don’t fit into the mold. And we were able to write that check with conviction.” They played a $2.5 bridge as a convert note following the seed round, when they saw that most of the Series A investors were not willing to step upCem: “We ended up then showing the company to about 40 firms. Everybody passed. The feedback was OK, keep us posted. Not enough traction for us to care at the moment. We had to bridge the company. The numbers were not exceptional, but it was certainly headed in the right direction.” *Cem: “Founders usually underestimate the leverage they have on their cap table. They negotiate things for very obscure situations. Experienced founders know that it’s their company. They will have a lot of flexibility around managing things when it happens, when the opportunity comes down the road.” I kind of agree. The amount of time that gets wasted on termination for cause is not funny. It is clearly a red flag when founders negotiate too much on this clause, per me, and I have begun to share this specific clause earlier in the discussion now. *Being quiet on the board. Cem: “We believe in being quiet on the board.….there’s this enormous pressure to demonstrate value add. We think that you, of course, learn from your experiences in other journeys, but then synthesize that and distill that to very carefully chosen moments to provide input to the founder. What a week of momentum and progress we've had here at Climate Investment (CI) where our portfolio of outstanding, pioneering innovators showcased their continued progress in our Impact Report 2023, available here - https://lnkd.in/ebxyiRaP. We also participated in the Series A funding round for 44.01 whose alternative to traditional carbon storage removes CO2 from the atmosphere and turns it into rock. And yesterday we saw two portfolio companies SensorUp Inc. and Insight M join forces to combine their respective methane management solutions to remove frictions for operators.
