🚨 There are some huge changes to Meta advertising coming into force next year that will see restrictions on optimisations, audience targeting and reporting accuracy for many charities. These imminent changes are likely to significantly impact charities that rely on Meta as a primary channel for fundraising and engagement. These updates have been released very quietly by Meta, just before the Christmas break. We're working closely with charities to understand the impact and explore solutions together. I've pulled everything we know so far into a blog, including which categories could be affected, and what steps you should take next. #Thursday4Knowledge #GeneralElection #LocalGovernment Following the announcement of the date of the General Election, (Independence or Independents Day?), here at Oscar we'll be tracking and updating the election result in real-time, as well as continuing with the Local Election updates (check our Seat Tracker below for the latest results and changes).  In addition, we have recently completed 372 Ward and Boundary changes.  Interestingly, for the 2024 election, there has been fall in the number of Constituencies in the following regions: West Midlands, North West, North East, Scotland and Wales. So what does a General Election mean for your PR team? 💁‍♀️ 📰 ✨ If, like me, you're working on a variety of activities over the next month, you'll be considering how things will look in the run-up to the 4th July in the UK. You'll be asking: should I press pause or pivot my PR plans or should I just crack on? Here's my tuppence: 👉 There will -obviously- be an increased media focus on politics. The general election is almost certainly going to lead the news for the next few weeks - from debates, updates, and coverage of election-related events. This can make it challenging for non-political stories to land (or land well). 👉 Your audiences' attention will also be heavily focused on the election, which might reduce the impact of your PR efforts as people may be more engaged with political news and less with other areas of the media (ie. lifestyle, consumer finance, technology). 👉 Editors and journalists will likely prioritise political stories over other content, leading to less coverage and lower chances of your work getting featured prominently. Similarly, journalists who cover non-political beats might get roped into the GE coverage, so don't assume anyone is working BAU. So what can you do about it? Most of us won't want to turn the taps off entirely and if you're gearing up for something big, you might worry about missing your moment (and trust me, I know that sucks because I was meant to launch a campaign 9th September 2022). Consider your options. 1️⃣ Reschedule your PR diary - If possible, it might be time to pivot your activity so that anything major kicks off after mid-July (assuming it's a clean election and there's not another hung parliament / coalition situation). This will help you avoid the peak election coverage period, particularly if you're launching a bigger project or campaign. 2️⃣ Embrace newsjacking - You can't be afraid to lean into politics with a small-p for this one, but if rescheduling is simply not an option, consider tying your PR campaign to the election in a relevant and newsworthy way. 3️⃣ Go niche - Now might not be the time to hit up your pals at the nationals. Think about the smaller publications that have a different remit. Be creative if you're on the consumer side. If you have a B2B arm, hone in on it. Focus on niche publications and online platforms that might still have space for your story, even during the election period. 4️⃣ Break away from the usual earned media channels - Think about your owned options. Social media, email marketing, and other direct channels can help you reach your audience when the media agenda is too crowded. Using these channels also means you can be more reactive, entertaining, and consistent in your comms despite the saturation of election news. There you go. My starter for ten. What would you add? Yesterday the DMA (Data & Marketing Association) UK launched its Value of Measurement 2024 Report, which I’ve had the pleasure of working with them on to shape & finalise along with the rest of the Measurement Taskforce. We all know that once we’ve done the hard work of securing budget for marketing activity, it is imperative that we can report back to the board what this investment has returned. The methodology of marketing measurement MUST be defined up front – how will you do it, what are the measures of success etc. For example, the board do not want to hear about open rates since these are KPIs and not the language of the board room. The board DOES want to hear about return on investment, incremental revenue and profit as these are business effects. Things like open rates are of course fine to track as KPIs to see trends over time. Reading ITV's latest press release the following phrase struck me: 'It (Planet V) is now the exclusive entry point for ITVX advertising, and handles over 99% of ITV’s digital ad bookings.' I have always championed self-serve ad platforms, having cut my teeth in the #Native space where self-serve was the norm, I then encountered the beast that is Meta’s ad platform. Both allowed #SME’s to flourish in the digital world where their smaller budgets often go unnoticed. There is a reason why some of the biggest #advertising businesses in the world offer self-serve and #ITV has tapped into that with an incredible £1bn in ad booking revenue in its first 4 years. Great interview here, with Laurence O'Byrne talking to FamousGrey CCO and author Peter Ampe. Peter speaks of the need for advertising to draw from a wider breadth of life experiences, as per the article I shared by Vicki Maguire yesterday, and the value of neurodiversity to creativity. I loved reading about his 'logical magic' philosophy, blending creativity with strategic purpose. Effectiveness is as important to Peter as creative acclaim: "The ‘logic’ part refers to the fact that I like ideas that will lead to results, this is the part clients like. I guess that’s my journalist background, I am fact-driven. The ‘magic’ part is the original angle that will lead to these results. My neurodivergent brain accounts for this. Therefore, I’m proud of my creative awards, but I’m equally proud of my Effie awards. I want to make work that either entertains or changes the world. But there always must be results." Hence not just 44 Cannes Lions but also 19 Effie Awards. Despite Google delaying the third-party cookie switch off again, I’m collating feedback from a variety of companies about what they’re doing to prepare for 3P-Day (as I’m calling it). So if you’re a network or platform with legacy tracking, what’s your plan for moving advertisers over? What will you do if some refuse? Do you have a fully-fledged plan and task force deployed? Can’t believe this still needs saying, but seeing as it’s National Freelancers Day, it feels apt: Treat freelancers with respect. This year Bright/Shift has paid out £227,000 to freelancers. Our model has been built around a global network of talent that allows us to build the right teams around our clients. Because in today's digital landscape, with countless ways to navigate ever-evolving channels and algorithms, it's crucial for businesses to have customised solutions tailored to their specific needs. So, how can you make sure you’re not taking the piss? 👉 Pay on time  No ifs. No buts. It’s a horrendous climate out there for freelancers. They aren’t just numbers on a page. They’re real people, with real mouths to feed, and real mortgages to pay. 👉 Give. Clear. Briefs. The clearer you are, the better the output. If in doubt, use references to explain what you do or don’t want. 👉 Define your ways of working  Ensure they are clear on how they will be remunerated and how their time will be valued - will they be working according to a day rate, or is there a defined project fee? 👉 Offer flexibility.  You’re working with them for their expertise, not for their ability to work within an 8-hour window. Of course they should be around to jump on calls when needed, but our best talent, both internal and external, like to burn the midnight oil. Cater to whatever provides the best outcome. Freelancers are more than just part-time workers. In my opinion, they’re fundamental to the new world of work, and they deserve to be recognised as such. #NationalFreelancersDay
