🎉 Participating in the AlgoRun'24 Hackathon competition with our team was both an exciting and unique learning experience! I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to invent.ai and Compec - Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Bilişim Kulübü for organizing this amazing event. 🛒 The challenge focused on forecasting July-August 2024 sales for a retail company using historical sales data. We were tasked with accurately predicting sales numbers, which required analyzing, modeling, and evaluating the data effectively. 📊 Key highlights from the competition: 🔍 Applied time series analysis and implemented the LightGBM algorithm, achieving a 0.68 RMSLE error metric. 🤝 Effectively utilized my skills in teamwork, data analysis, and problem-solving. 🏅 Achieved a top 6 ranking. This experience has once again demonstrated the value of creating solutions for real-world problems. As I move forward, I’m eager to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to future projects! 🚀 🙏 Additionally, I want to thank my teammate Sefa Berk Acar for his collaboration and contributions throughout the process. I was excited to present on “Best Practices for CSDs in the Fintech Era” during the AECSD & AMEDA İstanbul Summit 2024. It was a fantastic opportunity to discuss how #Fintech is revolutionizing the role of Central Securities Depositories (#CSDs) and the essential steps needed to innovate and adapt in today’s fast-evolving financial landscape. During my presentation, I explored how integrating #Blockchain and #AI would enable CSDs to: • Bridge the gap between traditional and #digitalsecurities. • Enhance operational #efficiency and #productivity. • Strengthen #riskmanagement processes. • Elevate #clientservices to meet the expectations of tomorrow’s markets. However, these opportunities come not without challenges. CSDs must be aware of and address: • #Regulatory hurdles in adopting new technologies. • The #complexity of integrating digital and traditional systems. • Increasing #cyberrisks as digitization accelerates. Yet, the stakes and opportunities far outweigh these challenges. To stay competitive and lead in this era of #transformation, CSDs must also prioritize internal awareness and ensure high levels of #digitalmaturity. Here is the key payment trends in Türkiye for the companies planning to launch in this market 1. State-Empowered Digitalization The Turkish government has been a major force behind financial innovation. In 2020, the Central Bank of Türkiye (CBRT) introduced QR code standards to promote interoperability among payment services and encourage cashless transactions. In 2022, CBRT launched an open banking infrastructure to foster data sharing and enhance the digital payments ecosystem. Additionally, Türkiye's fintech regulations have been aligned with EU standards, facilitating seamless regional operations 2. FAST Real-Time Payments (RTPs) Launched in January 2021, the Instant and Continuous Transfer Fund System (FAST) by CBRT offers 24/7 real-time payments, supporting both bank and non-bank transactions, and peer-to-peer (P2P) and merchant settlements. It features a user-friendly interface where transactions can be initiated using the recipient's phone number, email, or Turkish ID. The system has quickly gained popularity, with over 15.5 million registered users and 3.5 million daily transactions. Plans are in place to integrate FAST with cross-border payment systems 3. Digital Wallets and Financial Inclusion Digital wallet usage is growing rapidly in Türkiye, with domestic players dominating the market due to the absence of international e-wallets like PayPal and Apple Pay. Leading the market is Papara with 18 million users, offering a variety of financial services beyond payments 4. Banking-Powered Innovation Türkiye's financial institutions are pioneers in fintech. The country was the first in Europe and the Middle East to introduce contactless credit cards in 2006. Today, digital banking is prevalent with over 91 million active users. Banks have embraced digital transformation offering services like AI-powered customer service and mobile loans. 5. Gaming Sector Revenue Türkiye's gaming industry is booming, with 92% of internet users playing games, particularly on mobile devices. The sector is lucrative, with mobile games generating significant revenue 6. Mastercard has announced a strategic partnership with Turkish FinTech company Dgpays to accelerate the adoption of digital payment solutions for consumers and businesses across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EEMEA). Akbank, a strong supporter of the entrepreneurship ecosystem, is running the Akbank+ program under the umbrella of its innovation center, Akbank LAB, to support employees who want to establish their own startups. In the second term of the program, Akbank provided a $400,000 investment to Metriqus, a startup that enables game studios to make data-driven decisions in their marketing activities. Developed by Akbank employees Timur Demirkıran and Esra Atakişi, Metriqus helps mobile game studios use data more effectively in their marketing activities. With the Metriqus solution, game studios can access intelligent insights for their marketing activities and manage all their data from a single point. This allows them to make their marketing strategies more data-driven and receive recommendations to reach the right target audience. In the first term of Akbank+, with investments in the startups Waste Log, which digitizes waste processes, and VOLTLA, which improves the experiences of electric vehicle owners, the total investment reached $1.4 million. All you need to know about the new Turkish crypto bill, somethings may change but 99% will stay the same: Principles Regarding Crypto Asset Service Providers and Activities: - Only licensed crypto asset service providers can engage in trading, custody, initial sale, distribution, and other related activities. - Licenses, issued by the Board, are mandatory for establishing and operating crypto asset service providers. These licenses will consider factors such as the financial strength of founders, professional experience, technological infrastructure, internal controls, and business continuity policies. - Founders and shareholders with more than 10% of shares or voting rights must meet specific legal and financial criteria. - Directors and authorized representatives must meet all shareholder conditions, except the financial strength requirement. - Customer funds and crypto assets will be kept in separate, secure accounts. In case of financial difficulties, the Board can impose measures to ensure security. - The issuance of crypto assets and capital market instruments will be regulated by the Board. Legal and Criminal Liability: - Managers of crypto asset service providers are explicitly liable for any failure to meet financial obligations to customers. Their personal assets can be pursued in case of default. - Stricter penalties and special investigation procedures are proposed for embezzlement crimes involving crypto asset service providers. Transition Period: - Existing crypto asset service providers must notify the Board within one month of the Bill’s effective date and comply with forthcoming secondary regulations. New providers must also notify the Board and comply with these regulations. - Licenses will be required after the secondary regulations take effect. - Providers that commence activities before these regulations take effect can continue operating until their license applications are processed.

Fundraising Alert! Mastercard Invests in Dgpays Mastercard has made a minority investment in Turkish fintech Dgpays, as per a report in Webrazzi. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. The strategic investment will help both companies jointly develop advanced payment technologies and loyalty solutions tailored to the needs of markets in the region. Today, government officials in Turkey(One of the top 10 countries with the highest volume) shared the anticipated proposal for cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency exchange legislation. However, noticing that this information has not been shared in English, I would like to summarize this 19-article legislative proposal. 1. Licensing Requirement: Crypto exchanges will be mandated to obtain licenses from the Capital Markets Board (SPK) to operate legally. (SPK: The Capital Markets Board of Turkey (Sermaye Piyasası Kurulu) is the regulatory authority responsible for overseeing and regulating capital markets activities in Turkey. This includes monitoring and supervising activities related to securities, financial instruments, investment funds, and now, potentially, cryptocurrency exchanges under proposed regulations. The SPK aims to protect investors, ensure market stability, and promote transparency within Turkey's financial markets.) 2. Promotion of Crypto Assets: The proposal aims to facilitate the development of crypto assets within Turkey. 3. Regulation of Investment Advisory: The SPK will oversee investment advisory services pertaining to crypto assets and monitor unauthorized exchanges and illicit transactions. 4. Ban on Overseas Exchanges: Services offered by exchanges operating outside Turkey, beyond regulatory oversight, will be prohibited. 5. Criminalization of Unlicensed Services: Providing unauthorized crypto asset services will be treated as a criminal offense, punishable by 3 to 5 years of imprisonment. 6. Transition Period for Existing Exchanges: Existing exchanges must obtain licenses within one month of the law's enactment. Note 1: Officials stated in a live broadcast that there is no taxation related to any cryptocurrency sector in the draft law proposal. Note 2: A different government official stated that foreign/global exchanges will not be blocked from access in Turkey.

Big News 🗞️ coming out of the Central Asia/ Turkey Digital Ecosystem: Kaspi.kz (from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿) acquires controlling shares of the Turkish 🇹🇷 e-commerce giant, Hepsiburada (NASDAQ: HEPS) Earlier this year, I hosted Mikhail Lomtadze , Founder and CEO of the #superapp Kaspi on my podcast, Couchonomics with Arjun and we spoke about #geographic expansion at length (both during and after the episode) but I wasn’t able to get any hints on the above deal from him 🤣🤣🤣. My persuasion skills obviously need more work 😔. On a more serious note, there are some interesting implications to both parties and the wider digital ecosystem of Turkey. Those include and aren’t limited to: 🌐 Kaspi’s #acquisition of Hepsiburada signifies a clear move to expand beyond Central Asian market into Turkey, one of the largest #ecommerce markets in the region. This deal allows Kaspi to tap into Turkey’s vibrant and growing #digital economy, which benefits from a large, young, and tech-savvy population. It also positions Kaspi to potentially gain access to a broader audience European and Middle Eastern audience. 🌐 Hepsiburada, a well-known e-commerce player, has faced increasing competition from giants like Amazon and local platforms like Trendyol Group . The backing of Kaspi will provide both the financial muscle and technological capabilities Hepsiburada needs to innovate and maintain its market position. Additionally, Hepsiburada can benefit from Kaspi’s experience in #integrating fintech solutions, potentially enhancing payment options and customer financing through Kaspi’s superapp ecosystem. 🌐 This acquisition introduces a new dynamic to the e-commerce landscape in Turkey. This move may intensify #competition with #platforms like Trendyol and Amazon Turkey, pushing them to further innovate and expand their own service offerings to retain market share. 🌐 There is no doubts that Kaspi’s fintech and #ecommerce expertise can be used to create synergies between Central Asia and Turkey.
