Celebrating the delivery of Holly Health's year-long project exploring the potential of digital health tools for supporting people with both #hypertension (high blood pressure) and #mentalhealth challenges. Key highlights included... 🚀 1️⃣ Breaking new ground a Randomised Control Trial (RCT) in Primary Care, in collaboration with #NHS Northumbria Primary Care 2️⃣ Developing new innovative Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) features with expertise from Loughborough University 3️⃣ Expanding pilots across Primary and Secondary Care, addressing challenges in CVD (cardiovascular disease) 🫀, severe mental illness 🧠 and through health checks 📋 The project cements Holly Health's potential to reduce NHS costs and improve population health at scale. I recently attended the Prix Galien, celebrating great work in Life Sciences and Healthcare. Some observations from the day's second panel: Introducing New Technologies: Optimising pathways to improve population health Key takeaways include: Centres for Innovation: Focusing on specific therapies in specific places prevents duplication and maximizes effort. UK's Balancing Act: Navigating national standards alongside differentiated efforts within individual Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) remains a challenge. Ecosystem for Health Innovations: A high-functioning ecosystem, where all parties share interests and benefits, is crucial for thriving health innovations. Early Recognition of Innovation: Panellists emphasised the need for early identification of game-changing innovations, developing specific approaches and processes to ensure uptake and patient benefit. The UK’s Capped Medicine Budget: Seen as both a challenge and an opportunity, our capped budget makes it harder to get more expensive medicines to market, but drives the replacement of older treatments with newer, more effective options. Cost-Benefit Misalignment: The fact that cost and benefit don’t always show up in the same budget lines remains a fixable yet unresolved issue for NHS organisations. Workforce Impact: Both innovators and NHS management need to spend more time assessing the workforce impact of new technology to unlock its full benefits. Good research from KPMG covering some topical subject areas such as Generative AI and ESG. A few standout sections say: “Just 43% are confident they have their data ready to safely and effectively integrate generative AI.“ The “Biggest downside of failing to meet stakeholder expectations on ESG: #1 Competitors gaining an edge, #2 Threat to continued tenure, #3 Difficulty raising finance.“ As far as the E of ESG is concerned, my view is that whilst #1 is probably true from a perception of brand sense, I think your cost of operation and productive capacity can also be impeded. By improving this, I think you naturally improve your Environmental (E) performance. You can ask me how.

Insightful day at the Digital Health and Care Conference; supporting sustainable digital transformation, hosted by The King's Fund. A few takeaways below: Kicking off, a breakfast session with Mohi Khan, Sam Shah, Sarah Bradburn, and Rosie Kaur.   1. 🔎 Early identification through technology is key to avoiding deterioration - there is no lack of desire to drive innovation, the expertise is the challenge 2. ➗ The 'digital divide' continuous to grow - we’ve got to address this 3. 🤖 Automation has strong potential, but we must be conscious of ‘automation bias’ with a consideration for clinical and cyber safety 4. 📞 Remote technologies enable a remote workforce, reducing attrition and increase overall experience For the second session we were joined by Richard Meddings, Joe Harrison, Tommy Henderson Reay, Eamonn Dunne, Gemma Stacey and Mel Briers to discuss ‘the potential of digital innovation to transform health and care.   5. 💻 We continue to implement new solutions at pace with c.160 Trusts procuring a new EPR solution last year! 6. 📱 The NHS App has played a significant role, with c.4m repeat prescriptions in the app last month, saving 3 minutes per prescription (12m minutes saved!) 7. 📄 Social Care: 65% of care providers now using digital care records! For the third session, an ‘Interoperability and Integration’ breakout with Stephen Bush, Andrew Raynes CHCIO MSc, Savi Cartwright, Chris Johnson, hosted by Dr Loreen Chikwira. 8. 🥷 Cyber attacks have risen by 23% just this year - more needs to be done with suppliers to engineer out problems 9. ❌ We can’t afford to have monopolies forming (single vendor), this creates a single point of failure 10. 🕸️ We can’t afford not to be interoperable, but we must be conscious that swapping out systems is expensive and disruptive For the penultimate session of the day Emily Henderson, Lara Groves, Öznur Özkurt, and Iain Hennessey took to the panel to discuss ‘future facing technology’: 11. 🏆 We are creating an environment where new products can be built and scaled, with an innovation ecosystem that acts as a front door for innovators 12. 📊 There is requirement to build greater trust with the public a requirement when considering data sharing 13. 🏥 There has been a fundamental shift in care delivery with virtual wards and remote monitoring (12k virtual beds now in each ICS) For the final session of the day we were joined by, Jeremy Theal, Pritesh Mistry, Tim Ferris and Fiona Edwards to discuss 'releasing the potential of innovation'. 14. 💵 Unsustainable debt to GDP ratio across governments, national purchasing powers need considering on commodity technology.    15. 🧩 Big suppliers need to create an ‘innovation space’ within their products to allow others to develop on top 16. 🤝 National guidance on whole system procurement, but must allow the transformation to take place locally Great to be joined by Channel 3 Consulting colleagues, Angela Maragna and Manpreet Rakhra!

It was great to see such a big audience at the #OHDSI UK’s second annual event held at the Wellcome Trust, London. More and more players across the healthcare and life sciences industry are interested in federated networks and its power to leverage RWD and RWE. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞. Achieving this requires: 💡 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 – Streamlined processes for piloting and implementing new solutions. 🤝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 – Bringing industry, academia, and healthcare providers together. 📚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – Embedding change with structured management and continuous engagement. Deloitte has released its 2025 US Health Care Outlook and of particular interest is the power of the consumer and push for using digital technologies to improve health.

With nearly 25 years of experience in the healthcare sector, and a passion for improving people’s lives through healthcare transformation even before my hospital care days, I’m proud to have co-authored important joint research from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the NHS Confederation on addressing the growing issue of long-term sickness and economic inactivity. In the UK, we have 750,000 more people who are economically inactive due to long term sickness since the pandemic. This is in stark contrast to our EU peers, who have seen a 2.3% fall in economic inactivity, while ours has risen by 1.1%. Disturbingly, those aged 18-24 are among the most affected, averaging 18% annual growth rate between 2019 and 2023 for those reporting five health conditions. This issue not only impacts individual wellbeing, creating a significant social need for action, but also poses serious economic and fiscal costs. Addressing this problem can transform the health and lives of hundreds of thousands of people and boost UK economic growth by £109-177bn in the next five years. Over 50% of health outcomes are influenced by non-healthcare factors related to the places they live, such as living conditions, crime rates and access to services. A comprehensive whole-of-government approach (WGA) is therefore critical to tackle these root causes. Does how we reframe health change the way we prevent, manage and deliver care? I'm pretty optimistic that the answer is yes. The IPPR's final report on tapping into health as our greatest asset delivers a promising and pivotal narrative on a health creation system - moving people and communities towards health - delivering an entirety of social and economic value. The key to these policy recommendations will be the delivery mechanisms, accountability measures and the ambitions of the new government to set the ground rules for enabling change. There is no other moment than right now. But a reframe also needs new outcome measures. That's why Business for Health cic is working with the Office for National Statistics to reinstate and enhance the Health Index with business as core users, delivering the equivalent and connected role for health that GDP does for the economy.
