Private capital has huge potential to help develop a local ecosystem. It is the fuel for the local engine (startups and founders) to work. However, in biotech, local ecosystem dont thrive isolated but connected to the larger ones. Florian Schuster and Christopher Trummer seems to be doing this at Venga Ventures. From the little I have seen here, the idea is to connect Austria to the larger biotech league. If successful, the value created by these companies is spreaded between all engaged countries. If I understood this correctly, I share the excitement of this strategy and believe there is great technology to be developed outside of the larger biotech places of the world (think Boston, San Francisco, New York, San Diego and London), but that do not have a fighting chance if not connected to them somehow. Some local VCs in Brazil and Latan are doing this too like Vesper Biotechnologies and Zentynel Frontier Investments but there is room for more. Proud to be one of the first believers with Climate Founders in kolum.earth! Carbon pricing like the European Trading System (EU-ETS) and supply chain pressure are in my opinion the two most powerful approaches for decarbonization. Cross boarder adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs) are the link to combine those approaches. The limitations of the EU-ETS are the regional limitation, that just a few industries are involved and the prices are not high enough yet. CBAM solves the first limitation in my opinion entirely, as it includes all suppliers from Non-European countries into the system. This is a huge step und creates pressure in the supply chain. Last year I was looking for a startup working in this field, as I believe it sits in a very important position in the supply chains of carbon heavy industries and can enable many other impactful solutions. Very glad that Helge Wieggrefe and Marius Sprenger decided to join our Climate Founders program and start Kolum. With their speed and know-how they instantly convinced me to be the best team in this space. Let‘s rock this together! Should #GPs lower their management fees to attract more #LPs in this current fundraising environment? 💥💥💥 My thoughts are that no, not necessarily, but I would like to see more awareness around financial models, transparency and alternatives such as recycling. In the active investment period, a well managed fund has costs (DD, deal flow, operational expenses etc.)- and there is a reason why there is a typical 2% fee IF it is a typical investment model. I'm increasingly seeing emerging managers with differentiated investment strategies that are leaner, already well-oiled, with access to deals that don't require a huge amount of operational expenses due to their investment stage- and this is reflected in how fees are structured for LPs. I've also reviewed funds with a 2% or 2.5% fee structure that has just been plucked from the grass because 'its industry standard'. In addition, whilst fees typically decrease post-investment period, some costs may actually go up. Take a lean pre-seed CV fund. Due diligence costs are typically quite low compared to a growth stage round. However, hit the 6-7 year fund life mark, there are going to be exits, fund audits, perhaps secondaries- which all cost the fund capital, and which aren't always considered at it's launch. ♻️ Rather than trying to attract LPs with lower management fees, more funds should consider recycling their fees. This creates more alignment, a better shared incentive structure, and ultimately, more potential carry. I am also really not opposed to funds that over-deliver on DPI and IRR to increase carry to 30% under certain conditions. 💸 What about co-investments that are being marketed as an incentive to LPs? Is it a great 'get-to-know-you' tactic? Of course it is. Lots of non-institutional such as family offices are seeking to invest in directs, but don't always have the capacity, know-how or access to deals and this can be a win-win. However, I also believe it should be a given that your LP's can and should co-invest in deals, so I question how durable this incentive is. Is it sunny or cloudy at the Impact Europe's Impact Transformers Conference? Summing up the first day, there were different signals: 🌧: 👉 The impact investing market is still heavily hit by the substantial decrease of investment capital in Europe 👉 Different languages: many actors in impact investing still do not speak the language of investors or the financial industry, which they need to scale. Partly, they want the investors to speak their language, which is difficult to enforce. ☀: 👉 I met larger asset owners and fund managers at this conference - more than 2 years ago despite it being a much smaller event. 👉 Recognizing an increasing appetite in impact investing - however, currently more strategic planning and longterm plans on investments. 👉 listening to much more pragmatic and scalable impact investing solutions, much less ideas without actual investment logic included. ☀☀: Many old and some new faces in the European community. Those companies have a strong motivation to invest in a good relationship and health of their by far most important supplier and they already start to invest. Hula is here to accelerate that. Combined with political actions like the European Nature Restoration Law to restore 20% of degraded land & sea by 2030 and similar laws in UK and other countries we currently create a chance for nature and biodiversity to recover partly. But we probably don't have many chances to do it right, as time and money are limiting factors, therefore a good understanding of what we do and how we funnel money will be crucial to succeed. Hula Earth found a fantastic mix between accuracy with their BioT-Sensors and scalability with satellite data. The pace of change is accelerating, and only those who can adapt will thrive. Here are my six predictions for what’s ahead: 1️⃣ Political change in Germany: A double-edged sword The upcoming elections could reshape the cannabis landscape. A CDU/CSU-led government may attempt to roll back recreational cannabis policies, which would be a huge setback for the broader market. However, the medical cannabis sector is likely to remain stable, highlighting its importance for patient care and the health industry. 2️⃣ Putting patients first The industry is moving beyond merely selling products. Patients expect better outcomes, and companies that integrate telemedicine, digital tools, and personalized care will rise to the top. It’s not just about offering cannabis; it’s about improving lives through tailored solutions. 3️⃣ Data and BI: Thriving in oversupply Oversupply will be a first for Germany’s medical cannabis market. Companies must use data and business intelligence to navigate pricing pressures and identify the most promising opportunities. Really innovative (and much needed) proposal by Tanja Havemann and Adam Wolfensohn to direct catalytic capital to emerging markets, where first time fund managers and founders, very much knowledgeable of their markets’ idiosyncrasies and opportunities, certainly could make use of warehousing vehicles to assist them launch their investment propositions. This would not only accelerate investments in clean technologies and climate assets in those markets, but also revert in the solidification and growth of the asset management sector in emerging economies as well as catalyze larger sums of capital in the regions that need it the most. #climatefinance #blendedfinance #emergingmarkets #climateinvestments
